Nuno Espírito Santo remains on the West Ham bench after relegation from the Premier League
West Ham United has decided to keep Nuno Espírito Santo as head coach even after relegation from the Premier League, bringing an end to several days of uncertainty about the direction the east London club will take after one of the most difficult moments in its recent history. According to the club announcement of 27 May 2026, West Ham’s leadership held talks with the Portuguese specialist at the beginning of the week and confirmed that both sides want to continue working together. This has given Nuno the task of leading the team in the Championship, with the clear goal of returning to the Premier League already in the 2027/28 season.
The decision was made only a few days after West Ham, despite a 3-0 victory against Leeds United in the final round, finished 18th in the Premier League table. According to the official Premier League table, the London club ended the 2025/26 season with 39 points, two fewer than Tottenham, who remained in the league after a 1-0 victory against Everton. West Ham were therefore relegated together with Burnley and Wolverhampton, even though they collected significantly more points than teams finishing in the relegation zone usually do.
According to the club announcement and reports from British media, after relegation the board considered the broader picture, not only the final position. The statement emphasized that the season’s outcome was painful, but also that signs of progress had been noticed in recent months under Nuno’s leadership. The club stated that the coach had clearly said he was motivated for the challenge of returning to the top tier, while the board stressed that returning to the Premier League at the first attempt would be the unquestionable goal for next season.
The late reaction was not enough to stay up
West Ham entered the final stretch of the season hoping that they could avoid relegation, but their fate was no longer entirely in their own hands. In the final round, they had to beat Leeds United and at the same time wait for help from Everton against Tottenham. Nuno Espírito Santo’s team did its part with a convincing victory at the London Stadium, but Tottenham’s victory meant that the two-point gap remained unreachable.
According to West Ham’s match report, the London club finished the season with 39 points, the highest total by a relegated team since the 2010/11 season, when Birmingham City, Blackpool and West Ham themselves were relegated with the same number of points. In its own announcement, the Premier League pointed out that this total was significantly above the average number of points that, since the league was reduced to 20 clubs, had been enough for 17th place and survival in the competition. This further shows how specific this year’s fight for survival was, but it does not change the basic fact: West Ham finished the season below the line.
In the club’s review after relegation, Nuno admitted that it was a difficult day for everyone connected with the club. According to West Ham’s announcement, he thanked the supporters for their backing and said that the team must understand the frustration, sadness and anger that accompany such an outcome. At that point, he did not want to talk about his own future, but stressed that the club had to return to the Premier League. Three days later, the board confirmed that he would be the one to lead that attempt.
Why the board chose continuity
Keeping a coach after relegation is not an automatic decision in English football, especially at clubs with high expectations and significant financial pressure. In West Ham’s case, according to the available information, the decisive factor was the assessment that the team showed a clearer identity and greater competitiveness in the second part of the season than in the first part of the competition. Official club data states that West Ham collected 25 points in 17 matches from mid-January, while in the first 21 matches they collected only 14 points.
That difference in rhythm was one of the arguments for continuing the cooperation. In its statement, the club said that Nuno had shown commitment and that there was a belief he could continue to develop the positive shift from the final part of the season. The Guardian reported that the decision followed talks at board level and that other options had also been mentioned at the club, among them former West Ham captain Scott Parker and former coach Slaven Bilić, but in the end the idea of continuity prevailed.
Nuno has experience that is now especially important for West Ham. According to the official biography on the club’s website, he arrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 and won the Championship in his very first season, thereby returning the team to the Premier League. After that, Wolves stabilized in the top tier and secured European football, which is a relevant part of the argument in London as to why the Portuguese specialist can lead the return project.
Nuno took over the team in September and inherited a difficult situation
Nuno Espírito Santo was appointed West Ham head coach on 27 September 2025, after the departure of Graham Potter. According to the official Premier League website, he then took charge of the fourth English Premier League club of his coaching career, after Wolverhampton, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest. West Ham presented him as a coach with experience in England, Spain, Portugal and Saudi Arabia, and the club saw his appointment as an attempt to stabilize a season that had already been seriously compromised.
The problem for West Ham was a poor start to the season. According to club data published after the final round, the team collected only 14 points in its first 21 matches, which pushed it into a situation in which even a better finish to the season could be insufficient. In the spring, Nuno managed to reduce the gap and return the team to a realistic fight for survival, but the final outcome showed how heavy the burden of the start of the season had been.
Precisely because of this, the board did not try in its statement to present relegation as a coincidence. Earlier, in a statement after relegation was confirmed on 24 May, the club admitted that it had not been good enough and that it had not repaid the supporters’ backing. Such wording shows that West Ham are announcing a broader analysis, not only a change in the coaching staff. Keeping Nuno therefore does not mean that the club considers the season acceptable, but that it is entrusting responsibility for recovery to a coach whom it believes has already initiated some of the changes.
The Championship brings a different kind of pressure
Returning from the Championship to the Premier League is one of the most demanding tasks in English football. The second tier has 24 clubs, a congested schedule and extremely unpredictable competition, while the financial gap between the Premier League and the Championship creates strong pressure on clubs that are relegated. In such an environment, West Ham will be one of the best-known clubs in the league, but that only increases expectations and public pressure.
According to the club announcement, the goal is to return to the Premier League at the first attempt. Such wording leaves little room for gradual transition, especially because relegation affects television-rights income, players’ market value and budget planning. British media report that a summer of changes is expected at the club, and The Guardian writes that the financial effects of relegation could lead to the sale of part of the playing squad.
The most attention is being drawn by the status of captain Jarrod Bowen. According to The Guardian, after relegation was confirmed Bowen said that he wants the club to be in the Premier League and that West Ham means a lot to him, but reports at the same time emphasize that the financial circumstances could influence decisions about key players. In such a situation, Nuno will not only lead the team on the pitch, but also the process of adapting the squad to a competition in which a different physical and tactical balance is often required.
A message of responsibility is being sent to the supporters
In its official statement after relegation, West Ham acknowledged the supporters’ disappointment and stated that the club had not met expectations. Such a tone was important because relegation came after a period in which the club had major sporting ambitions, including winning a European trophy in 2023. The drop into the Championship is therefore not seen only as a results failure of one season, but as a signal that deeper changes are needed in the way the club is managed and planned.
According to The Guardian, as part of the message after the decision on Nuno’s stay, West Ham also announced a reduction in season-ticket prices of up to 30 percent. This move is meant to ease part of the dissatisfaction and show that the club recognizes the financial and emotional burden that relegation brings to supporters. Still, trust will not be restored by the ticket-pricing decision alone, but by results, more transparent planning and a clear direction in the transfer window.
The board is also aware that keeping the coach may be risky if the start of the Championship season is not convincing. Nuno will be under pressure for results from the first round, because a club that has just been relegated from the Premier League often does not have a long period of adjustment in the eyes of the public. On the other hand, the decision to continue the cooperation allows him to begin work immediately on preparations, assessment of the squad and defining a style of play for a competition in which West Ham will have to take the initiative in many matches.
What the decision means for West Ham’s summer
The biggest challenge now is to align the ambition of a quick return with the reality of financial and sporting decline. According to British reports, West Ham will have to make decisions about players on high wages, possible outgoing transfers and reinforcements suited to the Championship. This is a sensitive process because too big a sell-off could weaken the team, while keeping an overly expensive squad could burden the finances in a season with significantly lower income.
Nuno has an advantage in that process because he knows the existing squad and spent the final part of the season building the team’s foundations. According to club data, in the last 17 matches West Ham collected points at a pace that, in more stable circumstances, would have been enough for a calmer position in the table. But the Championship does not reward only the quality of individuals, but also continuity, squad depth and the ability to cope with matches at short intervals.
The board’s decision is therefore at the same time a message of trust and a demand for a quick result. Nuno Espírito Santo remains coach because he convinced the club that he has a plan for promotion, but he is entering a season in which talking about progress will not be enough. West Ham must once again become a team that wins in runs, manages pressure and uses its status as one of the Championship favourites. After confirmation that the Portuguese coach is staying, the first major test will be the transfer window and the way in which the club shapes the team for a return to the Premier League.
