Turkey became the first team eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after defeat to Paraguay
The Turkish national football team became, on 20 June 2026, the first team to lose any chance of qualifying for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, although it still has one match left in Group D against the United States of America. According to The Guardian's match report, the 1-0 defeat to Paraguay meant that Turkey, regardless of the result in the final round, can no longer finish higher than fourth place in the group. Such an outcome further underlined the weight of the new order of criteria for ranking teams tied on points, because head-to-head results are assessed first in the group. Turkey had previously lost 2-0 to Australia, and after the new defeat remained without points from its first two appearances. The final match against the USA therefore no longer has competitive significance for the Turkish team in the battle for qualification, but remains an opportunity to soften the impression after a surprisingly early elimination.
An early goal decided the match in the San Francisco area
The match between Turkey and Paraguay was played at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, the official name used by FIFA during the tournament. According to the Times of India report, the decisive goal was scored by Matías Galarza already in the second minute, after an error by the Turkish defence and a low left-footed shot from outside the penalty area. The Guardian, in its live coverage of the match, stated that the goal came in the 65th second, which allowed Paraguay to spend almost the entire match in defensive mode. After falling behind early, Turkey had the territorial initiative, but failed to turn possession and the number of attempts into a goal. Times of India states that the Turkish team finished the match with 32 shots toward goal and high passing accuracy, but without the final move that would break through the Paraguayan defence.
Paraguay made its own situation even more difficult late in the first half, when Miguel Almirón received a straight red card. According to the same report, the sending-off came after an incident in which Almirón covered his mouth during a confrontation with Mert Müldür, which was marked as the application of a new tournament rule regarding such behaviour. With one player fewer, Paraguay dropped even deeper in the second half, but preserved the minimal lead and won its first three points of the tournament. Turkey pressed, sent balls into the penalty area and tried with shots from distance, but that approach did not bring a change in the result. In the end, it was precisely Galarza's early goal that remained the moment that decided the match and completely changed the picture of Group D.
Why even a win against the USA no longer helps Turkey
The key to Turkey's elimination is not only that the team has no points after two rounds, but also how ties in the group are resolved under FIFA's rules for the 2026 World Cup. In its explanation of the competition system, FIFA states that when two or more teams have the same number of points, the points won in head-to-head matches are considered first, then the goal difference in those head-to-head matches, and then the number of goals scored in them. Only if those criteria do not separate the teams do overall goal difference in the group, total number of goals scored, team disciplinary record and position in the latest FIFA ranking come into play. That order is highly important in groups with four teams because it can eliminate a team before the final round, even when mathematically it can still catch some rivals on points. That is exactly what happened to Turkey.
With a win against the USA in the final round, Turkey could reach only three points. However, it has already lost to Australia and Paraguay, two teams directly competing for second and third place. If a three-point tie were created in the closing stage, the Turkish national team would be weaker in the head-to-head matches than both main rivals from that part of the table. According to the order of criteria FIFA published for the 2026 tournament, that means that its overall goal difference could no longer improve its position ahead of the teams to which it lost. For that reason, the defeat to Paraguay had a final effect: Turkey enters the third round with no possibility of qualifying among the two best teams in the group and without a realistic path toward the status of one of the best third-placed teams.
Paraguay stayed alive, a direct path opens for Australia
Paraguay's victory did not only eliminate Turkey, but also reopened the battle for second place in Group D. After two rounds, the USA has six points, while Australia and Paraguay have three each, and Turkey is without points. According to The Guardian, Paraguay climbed to third place with the victory and drew level with Australia, while those two teams will meet in the final round. A draw in that match is enough for Australia to advance directly as the second-placed team, because it currently has a better overall goal difference after the win against Turkey and the defeat to the USA. Paraguay, on the other hand, can overtake Australia with a win, and even in the case of third place can remain in contention for qualification through the special ranking of third-placed teams.
The format of the 2026 World Cup for the first time includes 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams, and FIFA states that the two best teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advance to the round of 32. That means third place in itself does not mean elimination, but it does not guarantee qualification either. Third-placed teams are compared according to number of points, goal difference, number of goals scored, disciplinary record and, if necessary, FIFA ranking. That is why Paraguay, after the win over Turkey, has a double motivation: it can secure direct qualification against Australia, but it can also collect points and goals for the wider comparison of third-placed teams. Turkey, because of two defeats to direct rivals, was left without such a protective option.
The USA secured the knockout stage and put pressure on the rest of the group
The outcome of Group D was further shaped by the United States' 2-0 victory against Australia, played a day earlier in Seattle. According to the Times of India report, the American national team secured qualification for the round of 32 with that victory and with one match to spare, after defeating Paraguay 4-1 in the first round. In the match against Australia, the first goal was an own goal by Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute, while Alex Freeman scored the second American goal in the 43rd minute. The same source states that the USA achieved two consecutive victories at the start of a men's World Cup for the first time since the 1930 World Cup. After Paraguay's victory over Turkey, the American national team is practically protected in the battle for the top of the group as well, because it has wins over both possible rivals who can catch it on points.
For Turkey, that means the final group match comes against a team that has already fulfilled its basic objective and continues the tournament from a favourable position. Still, such matches do not have to be without weight, especially for a team that arrived at the competition with the ambition of returning to the world stage after a long absence from finals tournaments. Sporting News, in its preview of Group D, recalled that Turkey had previously appeared at the 2002 World Cup, and qualified for the 2026 tournament through the European play-off path. Vincenzo Montella's team entered the group with players such as Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız and Ferdi Kadıoğlu, so the double defeat in the first two rounds was received as one of the early disappointments of the tournament. The final round can therefore be important for sporting reputation and internal analysis, but it cannot change the competitive fate.
Disappointment for Turkey after great expectations
Turkey's early elimination resonated especially strongly because, before the tournament, the national team had a recognisable combination of young attacking players, technically strong midfielders and experience in European football. After the defeat to Australia, the match against Paraguay was supposed to be an opportunity to return to the battle for second place and to create pressure ahead of the final duel against the USA. Instead, Turkey again fell into a problem that often decides tournament matches: control of the ball was not accompanied by efficient finishing. According to available reports, the national team had a pronounced statistical superiority against Paraguay, but faced a deep block, a dense defence and its own lack of composure in the final third. Such a defeat therefore carries a heavier message than the 1-0 result itself, because it shows that the team did not find a solution even when it had most of the match to turn things around.
On the other hand, Paraguay confirmed with the victory the kind of competitive resilience that often marks successful performances at major tournaments. Gustavo Alfaro's team survived long periods of Turkish pressure, endured the second half with one player fewer and stayed in the race after a heavy defeat to the USA in the first round. Such a psychological turnaround could be significant ahead of the match against Australia, in which the Paraguayan national team will know that victory brings a very likely continuation of the tournament. Paraguay returned to the World Cup finals after an absence since 2010, and the win over Turkey gave its campaign concrete competitive meaning. After the dramatic outcome in the San Francisco area, Group D is no longer a story about Turkish recovery, but about the duel between Australia and Paraguay for the remaining direct qualification spot.
The wider significance of the first elimination at the expanded tournament
Turkey's elimination is the first major warning of how unpredictable the expanded format of the 2026 World Cup can be despite the larger number of places in the knockout stage. On paper, the additional eight places for third-placed teams should provide more room for recovery after a poor start, but head-to-head rules can very quickly close the path for a team that loses to direct rivals. In Turkey's case, defeats to Australia and Paraguay did not leave enough room for manoeuvre, even with the possibility that the final round could bring a first victory. It shows that in the new system, third place is not a simple safety net, especially when results against immediate rivals turn against one team. For the other participants in the tournament, this is an early reminder that calculations in the closing stages of groups begin long before the final referee's whistle of the third round.
FIFA's system with 12 groups and a round of 32 brings more matches, more combinations and more room for teams that build a sufficiently good points foundation in the first two rounds. But at the same time it increases the importance of disciplined management of details, from head-to-head duels to goal difference and disciplinary record. In such an environment, Paraguay extracted maximum value against Turkey from one early goal, while Turkey paid dearly for two unsuccessful attempts against direct competitors. The final matches of Group D, USA against Turkey and Paraguay against Australia on 25 June 2026, will therefore be played with completely different stakes for the four teams. One team is already secure in the knockout stage, two are fighting to continue the tournament, and Turkey enters the group finale as the first team left without a chance of qualification.
