USA convincingly opened the World Cup: Paraguay could not withstand the hosts' rhythm in Inglewood

The United States opened its 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4:1 victory against Paraguay in the first-round match of Group D, played on June 12, 2026, at the stadium that FIFA lists in its official schedule as Los Angeles Stadium, and which is publicly known as SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. According to a U.S. Soccer post, the American national team had already built a 3:0 lead in the first half, and finished the match with one of the most convincing performances in its World Cup history. Paraguay managed to reduce the deficit in the second half, but did not have enough continuity, pressure or defensive stability to bring the match back into uncertainty. The hosts claimed the three points thanks to an early own goal by Damián Bobadilla, two goals by Folarin Balogun and a final goal by Giovanni Reyna in stoppage time. The result gave the USA a strong start to the tournament, while Paraguay, after a heavy defeat, will have to quickly find an answer in a group in which every goal may prove important.

Early pressure immediately changed the course of the match

The American national team imposed a high tempo from the start and very quickly forced Paraguay into mistakes in the back line. According to U.S. Soccer's report, the first lead came as early as the 7th minute, after a move involving Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, when the ball struck Paraguayan defender Damián Bobadilla and ended up in the net. That goal was not only a statistically early blow for Paraguay, but also a signal of the way in which most of the match would develop: the USA attacked wide, with many entries into the final third, while the opponent was often late in closing down space. U.S. Soccer, citing Opta, stated that the goal scored after 6 minutes and 48 seconds was the third-fastest goal by a host national team in its first match at a World Cup. Paraguay briefly threatened in the opening minutes, but after conceding the goal it found it increasingly difficult to play out of pressure and more often returned the ball under pressure from the American midfielders.

In that period, American control of the middle of the pitch was especially important. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie closed down the space in front of the defense, Malik Tillman often appeared between the lines, and Pulisic created an overload on the left side in one-on-one situations. Paraguay, in the formation shown by FOX Sports as 4-4-2, tried to maintain a compact block, but its back line increasingly retreated toward its own penalty area. Because of that, the USA could sustain attack after attack, without great risk from transition. U.S. Soccer noted clear American superiority in possession and entries into the penalty area midway through the first half, which soon turned into a new separation on the scoreboard.

Balogun used the stage and settled the match before the break

Folarin Balogun was the central figure of the match. According to FIFA's official report, the forward led one of the most memorable American displays at World Cups with two goals. He scored for the first time in the 31st minute, after Pulisic found space in the Paraguayan defense and played him into the penalty area. Balogun remained calm, avoided offside and made it 2:0 with a powerful shot. That goal came shortly after a goal had been disallowed for offside, so it carried extra weight for the American forward: instead of letting the missed situation knock him out of rhythm, he attacked the space behind the Paraguayan defense even more aggressively.

Balogun's second goal came in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, after a move in which, according to FOX Sports, the assist came from Malik Tillman. U.S. Soccer described that goal as the moment that gave the USA a three-goal lead at halftime, which also had historical significance for the American national team in the context of World Cup appearances. The organization stated that Balogun thereby became only the second player of the American national team with multiple goals in a single World Cup match, after Bert Patenaude in 1930. By the break, the match had practically been directed toward an American victory, although the question remained open as to whether Paraguay could at least slow the rhythm and reduce the gap in the second half. Considering what had been shown in the first 45 minutes, Paraguay's problem was not only the scoreline, but also the fact that it was not finding a stable way to play out of pressure.

Paraguay's response came too late

Paraguay tried to change the dynamics of the match in the second half with a more aggressive approach and more frequent moves toward the American half. According to FOX Sports' match flow, in the second half Paraguay had several attempts through Diego Gómez, Miguel Almirón and Julio Enciso, but those attacks did not last long nor did they turn into constant pressure. The USA retained enough structure even after Pulisic came off at halftime not to lose control. U.S. Soccer announced that Sebastian Berhalter came on instead of Pulisic at the start of the second half, while Tim Weah, Ricardo Pepi and Giovanni Reyna later also got their chance. That pattern of substitutions showed that the American staff did not want only to defend the result, but to maintain energy in midfield and attack.

Paraguay scored in the 73rd minute. According to U.S. Soccer, Julio Enciso found Maurício in the penalty area, and he scored to make it 3:1 and, for the first time, more seriously reduced the difference. That goal briefly opened the possibility of a different ending, but it did not change the basic impression of the match. The American defense, led by Tim Ream and Chris Richards, did not fall apart under pressure, and the midfield quickly slowed Paraguay's attempts to make the match dramatic. Paraguay collected fouls and yellow cards in the closing stages, and according to FOX Sports' match record several of its players were booked in the second half. Instead of a series of attacks that would announce a comeback, the finish again belonged to the USA.

Reyna sealed the victory, statistics confirmed American dominance

Giovanni Reyna set the final 4:1 in the eighth minute of stoppage time. According to U.S. Soccer, Reyna came on in the 82nd minute instead of Malik Tillman, and then scored his first World Cup goal. FOX Sports recorded in the match report that the goal was scored in the 90.+8 minute, confirming the USA's convincing victory. That final goal also had symbolic value because it showed that the hosts had not lost their attacking ambition even after the result had already been decided. For Paraguay, on the other hand, it was the final blow in a match in which it was forced for most of the time to react to American moves.

The statistics further illustrated the difference in approach and execution. According to ESPN's match summary, the USA had 65.2 percent possession, 16 attempts at goal and six shots on target, while Paraguay had 34.8 percent possession, nine attempts and only one shot on target. During the match, U.S. Soccer also stated that the American national team, after the first hour, had 40 touches in the opponent's penalty area, the most for the USA in a single World Cup match since 1966 according to Opta data. Such data explain why the final 4:1 did not look like an isolated sequence of efficient finishes, but rather as the consequence of constant pressure. Paraguay scored from one of the rare situations in which it managed to find space between the American lines, but it did not create enough to make the defeat smaller or the impression more balanced.

An important result for the host and Group D

Victory in the first round carries special weight in the new format of the 2026 World Cup, the first edition of the tournament with 48 national teams. According to information from FIFA and the organizing committee in Los Angeles, the tournament is being played in 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States, and includes 104 matches. The national teams are arranged into 12 groups of four teams, which means that the opening of the tournament remains very sensitive: three points in the first round can significantly reduce pressure before the remaining matches, while a heavy defeat immediately raises the question of goal difference and psychological recovery. In that sense, the American 4:1 carries not only point value, but also a clear message to the opponents in Group D.

After the match, U.S. Soccer stated that the result temporarily placed the USA at the top of Group D. According to FIFA's schedule, the American national team continues the group against Australia in Seattle, and then against Turkey in Los Angeles. Paraguay, on the other hand, after the defeat must look for points against Turkey and Australia, aware that its goal difference after the first round has been significantly damaged. In a group with four national teams there is not much room for a long search for rhythm, especially at a tournament where, in addition to the two top-placed national teams from each group, the eight best third-placed teams also progress to the knockout stage. Because of that, the Paraguayan staff will have to quickly assess whether the problem was primarily the consequence of American speed and quality or an indicator of deeper weaknesses in the organization of play.

SoFi Stadium as a major stage for the start of the American campaign

The match was played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which for the purposes of FIFA's tournament is often listed in official communication as Los Angeles Stadium. According to the SoFi Stadium website, the start of the match was scheduled for 6 p.m. Pacific Time, with earlier gate opening and a stadium program. During the broadcast, U.S. Soccer announced that the match was watched by 70,492 spectators. Such an atmosphere further emphasized the importance of the match for the hosts, because it was the American national team's first match at this World Cup and one of the key sporting evenings of the tournament in Los Angeles.

According to an announcement by the organizers for that host city, Los Angeles will host multiple matches of the 2026 World Cup, including group matches, early knockout-stage matches and a quarterfinal. The same source states that the schedule for Los Angeles was published after the final draw, with confirmation that the USA-Paraguay clash on June 12 was precisely the start of the American path at the tournament. For a national team playing in front of its home crowd, such a start also carries additional responsibility: every convincing victory increases expectations, but also creates an atmosphere in which the team enters the next matches more easily. Pochettino's team showed in that first test attacking width, good physical preparation and the ability to turn an early lead into control of the result.

Paraguay facing necessary corrections

Paraguay's defeat was not the consequence of one isolated defensive lapse. The early own goal did direct the match, but the problems repeated themselves in several phases: closing Pulisic down too slowly, poor tracking of Balogun's movements, insufficient connection between midfield and attack, and too little composure when carrying the ball out. According to the available match records, Paraguay at certain moments did get shots away, but did not create pressure that would force the USA into a deeper retreat. Maurício's goal after Enciso's pass showed that the team has individual quality in the finish, but that moment remained an exception, not the beginning of a comeback. If it wants to stay in the fight for progression, Paraguay will have to improve defensive reactions to switches of play through the flanks and find Almirón, Enciso and the forwards more quickly in zones where they can turn play toward goal.

For the USA, the most important thing is that the victory was achieved without reliance on one single pattern of attack. The first goal came through a run and forcing an own goal, the second after Pulisic's precise through ball, the third from Balogun's individual finish, and the fourth from Reyna's arrival from the bench. Such variety gives the American staff more options later in the tournament. Still, caution remains necessary because Paraguay managed to punish one situation of weaker concentration in the second half. Against opponents who will have more possession and more quality in the final third, such moments can be more costly.

The American start raises expectations, but the group is not yet decided

U.S. Soccer described the victory as an exceptionally strong start to the campaign, and FIFA emphasized Balogun's role in the convincing American celebration in its report. Such assessments are understandable after a 4:1 result and a performance in which the USA dictated the tempo for most of the match. But the first round never gives a final answer about a national team's reach at a tournament, especially in the new format with a larger number of participants and an additional knockout-stage round. The American national team got what it needed most: points, a high goal difference, confirmation of attacking form and an atmosphere of confidence. Paraguay, by contrast, opened the tournament with a defeat that demands a quick reaction and precise analysis.

The next matches will show how much this match was a sign of American strength, and how much it was the consequence of Paraguay's poor start to the tournament. According to FIFA's schedule, the USA plays against Australia in Seattle on June 19, 2026, while Paraguay faces Turkey on the same day at the stadium in the San Francisco area. After 4:1 in Inglewood, the hosts enter the rest of the group with a clear results cushion and the impression of a team that used the first evening almost completely. Paraguay, meanwhile, no longer has the luxury of a slow entry into the competition.
