Wales confirmed progression to the round of 16 of the World Cup of Darts 2026 with a safe victory against Thailand

Wales continued its convincing start to the World Cup of Darts 2026 in Group C with a 4:1 victory against Thailand at Frankfurt's Eissporthalle. Jonny Clayton and Nick Kenny, according to the official schedule and results of PDC Europe, completed their second group appearance without major complications and confirmed first place in the group after earlier defeating Lithuania by the same score. Thailand, represented by Sarayut Ouamuapa and Sorawis Rodman, did not manage to seriously halt the Welsh rhythm, although by winning a leg it avoided a defeat without scoring. For Wales, this was a result with double significance: it brought progression to the knockout phase and showed that the new combination of Clayton and Kenny can quickly find stability in the pairs format. In a tournament in which the group is played to only four won legs, every early break and every missed checkout can change the direction of the match, but Wales maintained control against Thailand from start to finish.

Clayton and Kenny without interruption through Group C

According to the organizer's data, Wales played against Lithuania and Thailand in Group C and won both matches 4:1. Such a performance was enough for safe progression because Lithuania defeated Thailand 4:2 in the other group match, so the Welsh duo did not have to enter the evening clash with the additional pressure of complicated calculations, but could confirm the top of the group with a win. Clayton and Kenny did exactly that: they played the match quickly and neatly enough to avoid an uncertain finish, while not allowing Thailand to build a longer series of won legs. In the short format to four won legs, such control is especially valued because one poor spell can erase an advantage created by a better start to the match.

Jonny Clayton arrived in Frankfurt as the most experienced Welsh name in the line-up, while Nick Kenny was given the role of new partner in the national team. According to the Sky Sports preview, Gerwyn Price was not available for selection, which is why Wales appeared with a different pair than in some earlier major successes. That change also had a consequence in the seeded rankings, because Wales entered the group stage as the seventh seed, instead of being among the four national teams that started directly from the round of 16. In such circumstances, the first task was to avoid an early stumble against opponents who, in a short format, can take advantage of a weaker opening from the favourite. Two 4:1 victories showed that Wales did not merely get through the group, but did so with a very clear difference in performance.

Thailand returned to the world stage through the Asian qualifiers

Thailand reached the World Cup of Darts 2026 through the Asian qualifiers, and in May the Professional Darts Corporation announced that, alongside Mongolia and Singapore, the Thais had also qualified for the tournament. The PDC then stated that Sarayut Ouamuapa and Sorawis Rodman secured Thailand's first appearance at the World Cup since 2023, after a dramatic conclusion to the qualifying play-off against Chinese Taipei. For the Thai pair, qualification for Frankfurt itself already had competitive importance, because the tournament brought together 40 national teams and a large number of established professionals from the PDC system. Still, the draw placed them in a group with two-time world winner Wales and experienced Lithuania, which immediately set a high threshold for progression.

In its first group appearance, Thailand lost to Lithuania 2:4, which meant that ahead of the clash with Wales it was left without real control over its own prospects. Against Clayton and Kenny, it needed not only a turnaround, but also a result that would open the possibility of a three-way tie between the national teams. That did not happen. Wales, according to the published results, celebrated 4:1 and thereby closed the group without defeat, while Thailand ended its appearance in the preliminary phase. That outcome does not change the fact that Thailand's return to this competition is important for broadening the international picture of darts, but in Frankfurt the difference between a qualifying pair and a national team with a serious tradition in this competition was visible.

The World Cup of Darts retained a format that rewards pairs, not only individual quality

The World Cup of Darts stands out especially in the PDC calendar because all matches are played exclusively in pairs. PDC Europe states that the group stage is played in a best of 7 legs format, while the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are scheduled in a best of 15 legs format, and the final in a best of 19 legs format. This means that in the group there is not much room for gradually raising form: national teams must immediately find a tempo, agree on the throwing rhythm and maintain communication under pressure. Pairs in such a format do not win only because of individual averages, but also because of the ability of one player to leave the other a workable checkout, to shorten crises quickly and to avoid piling up misses on the doubles.

For Wales, precisely that aspect was important because Clayton and Kenny are not historically the most recognizable Welsh tandem at this tournament. Clayton previously won the World Cup together with Gerwyn Price, and Wales, according to PDC Europe's list of previous winners, celebrated in 2020 and 2023. In the 2025 final, Wales lost to Northern Ireland 9:10, which according to Sky Sports was a dramatic duel decided in the final leg. The new line-up therefore had to simultaneously carry the reputation of a country that had already won this competition and prove that without Price it could remain competitive. The victory against Thailand does not provide a final answer about Wales's range, but it was a necessary and convincing first step toward more serious tests.

Frankfurt again hosts a tournament with 40 national teams

This year's edition of the BetVictor World Cup of Darts is being held from 11 to 14 June 2026 at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, PDC Europe announced. There are 40 national teams in the competition, and the total prize fund has been increased to 500,000 pounds, of which 100,000 pounds belongs to the winning team. The organizer states that the four highest-ranked national teams according to the combined positions of the two players on the PDC Order of Merit list entered the round of 16 directly. These are England, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland and Scotland, while the remaining 36 national teams were arranged into 12 groups of three teams each. Only the winner advances from each group, so the preliminary phase does not leave much room for a second chance.

Such a system further explains the importance of the Welsh 4:1 victory. In a group of three national teams, every match has an almost eliminatory character, especially for teams that lose the first match. Wales opened the ideal scenario with a victory against Lithuania, but a defeat to Thailand could have created an unpleasant circle and opened the question of leg difference. Instead, Clayton and Kenny concluded the group with two clear victories and qualified for the round of 16 without the need for additional calculations. For a national team that was under scrutiny because of a change in line-up, such an outcome represents a stable foundation ahead of the knockout phase.

The next challenge is the USA in the round of 16

According to the schedule published after the conclusion of the groups, Wales plays against the United States of America in the round of 16 on 13 June 2026. The American pair Adam Sevada and Stowe Buntz progressed from Group G after a victory over Canada 4:2, and in the same group one of the former world winners, Australia, had already fallen earlier. LiveDarts reported that the USA and Canada entered the deciding clash after both national teams had previously defeated Australia, which further confirms how unstable the group stage was for some of the seeds. For Wales, this means that in the round of 16 it does not face a symbolic continuation of the competition, but an opponent that has already shown it can punish favoured pairs.

The match against the USA will also be the first real test for the Welsh pair in a longer format. While the group matches were played to four won legs, the round of 16 is played to eight won legs, which changes the dynamics of the match. In a longer encounter, tactical changes occur more easily, runs of won legs carry greater weight, and the pair must withstand more throwing rotations and more pressure on checkouts. Clayton's experience in major televised matches can be an important support, but Kenny's stability in the second role will be equally important for the overall performance. If Wales maintains the rhythm from the group, it enters the knockout phase with a clear argument that even without its best-known earlier tandem it remains a serious candidate for the closing stages.

Broader context: the favourites are only just entering the competition

While Wales had to get through the group stage, the four highest-ranked national teams start the tournament directly in the round of 16. Sky Sports, in its tournament preview, highlighted England with Luke Littler and Luke Humphries as the first seed, the Netherlands with Gian van Veen and Michael van Gerwen, the defending champions from Northern Ireland Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney, and Scotland with Gary Anderson and Cameron Menzies. The entry of those pairs into the final stages further increases the weight of Saturday's matches, because the group winners immediately run into national teams that were spared the opening phase. In such a schedule, Wales does not have the luxury of gradually building form through several easier obstacles.

The victory over Thailand must therefore be read as a job done, not as final confirmation of a title candidacy. Wales fulfilled what was expected of it in a group with Lithuania and Thailand, but the true value of the new combination will be clearer against the USA and, potentially, in later rounds against national teams from the top of the PDC rankings. Still, for Clayton and Kenny the start in Frankfurt has clear sporting value: they avoided complications, kept the result under control and preserved the status of one of the national teams that, because of tradition and quality, must be followed with special attention. In a tournament of short formats and fast turnarounds, that is often the most important prerequisite for a calm entry into the more serious part of the competition.
