France broke Puerto Rico in Warsaw and remained undefeated in a demanding Group D

The French men's national 3x3 basketball team achieved an important victory in Group D of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026, after defeating Puerto Rico in Warsaw by a score of 18:16. The official FIBA schedule and score sheet state that the game was played on June 2, 2026, as part of the group phase, and the final score confirms that the contest was decided in the closing stages and without the early limit of 21 points. For France, it was the second victory in as many appearances in the group, while Puerto Rico, after its opening celebration against Brazil, suffered its first defeat at the tournament.

The game was also important because of the breadth of the competitive context. Before the start of the competition, Group D was marked as one of the strongest in the men's tournament, because it includes Lithuania, France, Belgium, Puerto Rico and Brazil. In its group preview, FIBA particularly highlighted the strength of that lineup, and the course of the first rounds confirmed it: Lithuania and France opened the tournament with two wins each, Puerto Rico remained in the fight for advancement with a 1-1 record, while Brazil and Belgium, after two appearances, were still seeking their first victory.

France reached the triumph against Puerto Rico after another tight test. Earlier the same day, according to the official FIBA schedule, the French celebrated against Belgium 21:20, which means that they settled their first two encounters in Warsaw by a total difference of three points. Such an entry into the tournament was not easy, but it was very valuable in terms of results: in a format in which one possession can change the entire table, two wins after two appearances opened space for France to await the final day of the group from a favorable position.

Puerto Rico stayed close, but without the final comeback

Puerto Rico entered the encounter with France with a positive start to the tournament. FIBA's timetable shows that Puerto Rico defeated Brazil 19:17 after overtime in its first appearance, thereby confirming already at the opening of the group that it can play on equal terms against physically strong and offensively dangerous opponents. Against France, it again remained in the game until the end, but this time it did not manage to turn a tight finish in its favor.

The final 16:18 for Puerto Rico means that the defeat remained within one successful two-point shot, which in 3x3 basketball is an extremely small difference. According to FIBA 3x3 rules, a shot from outside the arc is worth two points, and attacks last only 12 seconds, so a scoring deficit can change very quickly. Precisely for that reason, this kind of result says more than the defeat itself: Puerto Rico did not lose touch with the game, but France managed in the key moments to keep the advantage and avoid a second dramatic overtime finish.

For Puerto Rico, however, the defeat left enough room to continue the fight. After two rounds in Group D, Puerto Rico had one win and one defeat, with a total of 35 points scored according to the published table. In the group standings, that kept it ahead of Brazil and Belgium after the first part of the program, but also behind Lithuania and France, which stood out as the only undefeated teams in that group.

France confirmed its depth and experience

France's result in Warsaw continues the continuity of a national team that in 3x3 basketball has already occupied an important place on the international scene for several seasons. The French Basketball Federation announced that head coach Karim Souchu selected four players for the 2026 World Cup who during the season compete within the structures of Toulouse 3x3 and Bordeaux 3x3: Hugo Suhard, Jules Rambaut, Alex Vialaret and Emmanuel Monceau. The federation also emphasized that this is a group with experience on the international FIBA 3x3 circuit.

In the same presentation of the team, the French Basketball Federation recalled that Jules Rambaut was part of France's Olympic silver from Paris 2024, while the French men's national team had previously won bronze medals at the World Championships in 2017 and 2022. That context does not bring an automatic advantage in every individual game, but it explains why France is considered in Warsaw to be one of the teams with realistic ambitions for the final stages.

Two narrow victories at the beginning of the tournament can be viewed both as a warning and as encouragement. On the one hand, France did not create a large scoring distance against Belgium and Puerto Rico. On the other hand, in a sport built on short playing time, contact, quick decisions and the constant taking of responsibility, the ability to win tight games is often just as important as a convincing performance. In its first two appearances, France showed precisely that kind of stability.

Group D remains open until the final round

According to the published data after the games of June 2, Lithuania and France had a 2-0 record, Puerto Rico 1-1, and Brazil and Belgium 0-2. Still, the difference in total points scored shows that the group is not simple to read. Lithuania had 42 points scored after two rounds, France 39, Brazil 37, Puerto Rico 35, and Belgium 34. In 3x3 basketball, the number of points can be important for the standings when teams are tied by number of wins, so even defeats in which a team remains offensively efficient can keep it in the broader competitive calculation.

The schedule for June 4 brings key games for the final order of Group D. FIBA's timetable lists the encounters Brazil – Belgium, Lithuania – Puerto Rico, France – Brazil, Belgium – Puerto Rico and Lithuania – France. For France, that means a final group day against Brazil and Lithuania, while Puerto Rico will try to improve its record against Lithuania and Belgium. In such a schedule, France's victory over Puerto Rico gains additional value, because it was achieved against a direct competitor for the places that lead onward.

In its competition preview, the French Basketball Federation stated that, according to the format, the three best national teams from each group advance to the elimination phase. If such a ranking holds, France, after two wins, has taken a major step toward continuing the tournament, but it has not resolved all doubts. In a group in which five national teams play four games each, the final outcome can change in only a few encounters, especially if a circle of teams with the same number of wins is created.

Why the 18:16 result is important in 3x3 basketball

3x3 basketball has a different dynamic from classic five-on-five basketball. According to FIBA rules, it is played on one basket, on half a court, with three players and one substitute per team. A regular game lasts 10 minutes, an attack lasts 12 seconds, and the encounter can also end earlier if one team reaches 21 points. Baskets inside the arc are worth one point, and makes from outside the arc are worth two points, which means that a two-point shot in the closing stages is often a direct threat of a comeback.

In that context, an 18:16 victory is no small thing. France did not reach the automatic finish at 21 points, but it controlled the rhythm enough to finish ahead of Puerto Rico. Such a result points to a duel in which there was no room for relaxation, because a two-point difference in the 3x3 format can be erased with one attack. It also showed how important defensive discipline, decisions when switching players and shot selection are in games in which there are no long substitution series or time for lengthy tactical adjustments.

For spectators who do not regularly follow 3x3 basketball, exactly these kinds of results explain the appeal of the discipline. The game is short, the rhythm is high, and changes of possession happen without the classic stoppage after a made basket. FIBA describes that format as fast and easy to follow, with rules that encourage constant action. That is why even a result such as 18:16 carries a lot of tension, because in the closing stages every decision can have a direct effect on the group standings.

Warsaw as the center of the world tournament

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026 is being held from June 1 to 7 in Warsaw, and in its hosting announcement FIBA stated that this is the first arrival of the most important world 3x3 event in Poland. The tournament brings together 40 national teams, namely 20 men's and 20 women's teams. The competition is placed in the center of the Polish capital, around the area of the Palace of Culture and Science, which is part of the broader concept of 3x3 basketball as an urban sport often played in open and highly visible city locations.

When awarding the hosting rights, FIBA emphasized cooperation with the Polish Basketball Association and Poland's experience in organizing 3x3 events. The same statement noted that Lublin in 2023 hosted the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup, while the Polish men's national team finished sixth at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. Thus Warsaw received a tournament that has both sporting and promotional significance, because 3x3 remains a discipline connected with the Olympic cycle and the growth of professional international competitions.

The tournament schedule also strengthens the importance of early results. The group phase runs from Monday to Thursday, play-in encounters are scheduled for Friday, quarterfinals for Saturday, and semifinals, third-place games and finals for Sunday, June 7. Every result from the group therefore immediately has consequences for the path toward the final stages, and with its victory against Puerto Rico France avoided the pressure that a 1-1 record would have brought before the final day of the group.

Puerto Rico now searches for confirmation of advancement

Puerto Rico, after the defeat to France, does not have much room to wait. According to the schedule, on June 4 it first faces Lithuania, one of the two undefeated teams in the group after the first games, and then Belgium, a national team that despite defeats against Lithuania and France kept a high number of points scored. For Puerto Rico, it will therefore be important to maintain the offensive efficiency from its first two appearances, but also to reduce the number of possessions in which the opponent can get to an open two-point shot.

The success against Brazil in overtime showed that Puerto Rico has the quality to win in tight finishes. The defeat to France showed the other side of the same format: even a good game can end in failure if the opponent finds several more precise solutions in the final possessions. Therefore, for the Puerto Rican team, the continuation of the group will be a test of mental recovery as much as of tactical preparation.

France, on the other hand, enters the encounters against Brazil and Lithuania without a defeat, but not without pressure. Brazil, after two defeats, had 37 points scored, more than Puerto Rico, which shows that its place in the table does not necessarily reflect its full offensive danger. Lithuania, meanwhile, opened the tournament with maximum effect and 42 points scored. The final clash between Lithuania and France could decide the top of the group, a better path through the elimination phase and the avoidance of an additionally demanding schedule.

The 18:16 victory over Puerto Rico is therefore not only the result of one game, but an important part of the broader order of Group D. France confirmed that it knows how to survive uncertain finishes, Puerto Rico stayed close enough to still be a serious candidate for advancement, and the group retained the status of one of the most interesting parts of the men's tournament in Warsaw. The final value of that French triumph will be clearer after the games of June 4, when the group schedule closes and the path toward the elimination part of the World Cup is determined.
