Lithuania concluded Group D undefeated with a victory against France and confirmed its status as one of the favorites in Warsaw

The Lithuanian men's national 3x3 basketball team achieved one of the most important victories of the group stage of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026, defeating France 21:15 in Group D. According to the official FIBA 3x3 competition schedule, the match was played on June 4 in Warsaw, in the final part of the group competition, and the result gave Lithuania a perfect record after four played games. In a duel between two European national teams that had been highly positioned in the seeding rankings before the tournament, Lithuania reached a victory that has both competitive and psychological value. France entered the game with good prospects of challenging for first place in the group, but the Lithuanian selection controlled the key moments and finished the match before time expired by reaching the limit of 21 points. This confirmed Lithuania's high level in one of the strongest groups of this year's World Cup.

According to the official Group D standings, Lithuania finished the group stage with a 4-0 record, while France remained on three wins and one defeat. Such an outcome is particularly important because Group D was described in FIBA's announcement as extremely demanding, with Lithuania, France, Belgium, Puerto Rico and Brazil. Before the victory over France, Lithuania had already defeated Belgium 21:14, Brazil 22:20 after overtime and Puerto Rico 17:16, so the final triumph against France confirmed continuity in games of different rhythm and pressure. According to the official results, before losing to Lithuania, France defeated Belgium 21:20, Brazil 20:15 and Puerto Rico 18:16, which shows that it too came through the group as one of the most serious teams. The final score of 21:15 is therefore not just an individual victory, but also a clear message from Lithuania ahead of the elimination part of the tournament.

The game that decided the top of a demanding group

The meeting between Lithuania and France carried special weight because it came at the end of the cycle of games in Group D. In the 3x3 basketball format, in which every national team in the group plays against every other one, the difference between direct qualification for the quarterfinals and an additional play-in duel often comes down to one possession, one defensive reaction or one two-point shot. FIBA's official standings after the group stage show that Lithuania won the maximum four victories and a total of 80 ranking points, with an average of 20 points per game. France remained second with three victories and a total of 74 points, or an average of 18.5 points. These figures confirm that these are two highly productive national teams, but also that Lithuania was more efficient in the closing stages of the decisive duel.

The 21:15 victory is especially significant because in 3x3 basketball a game can end before the regular ten minutes expire if one team reaches 21 points. According to FIBA rules, that is the limit which, in regular time, brings the game to an immediate end, regardless of the time remaining on the scoreboard. For that reason, every such result indicates the winning team's ability to impose the tempo and make use of scoring runs in short time intervals. Lithuania managed exactly that against France: it maintained its attacking rhythm, limited the French output and closed the match with a result that secured it the most favorable position in the group. In a sport in which the rhythm changes from possession to possession, a six-point margin against an opponent such as France represents a very convincing victory.

Lithuania's run in the group shows depth and resilience

Lithuania's path through Group D was anything but simple. According to the official results of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026, the Lithuanian national team opened its campaign with a 21:14 victory against Belgium, immediately setting an attacking standard. This was followed by a meeting with Brazil that ended 22:20 after overtime, showing that Lithuania can also withstand games in which the result breaks above the usual limit of 21 points. Against Puerto Rico, it celebrated 17:16 in a low-margin encounter, and precisely such games in 3x3 basketball often reveal discipline, possession control and defensive concentration. The final victory against France, 21:15, therefore rounds off a group in which Lithuania showed several different ways of winning.

In the draw announcement, FIBA stated that Lithuania entered the group as one of the strongest European teams and the reigning winner of the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup, while France was also among the seeded teams with a high rating. In the official seeding rankings for the tournament, Lithuania was fourth and France fifth, which further explains why their head-to-head meeting was an important indicator of the balance of power. In such circumstances, Lithuania did not merely defend its status as favorite from the perspective of the group standings, but strengthened it further with the result against its most direct rival. Belgium, Brazil and Puerto Rico finished the group with one victory each, confirming how important every game was for the final order. Lithuania's 4-0 record in such a group represents one of the strongest results of the men's tournament group stage.

France remains in contention for the final stage despite the defeat

With the defeat to Lithuania, France lost the chance to finish the group undefeated, but it did not lose its status as a dangerous opponent in the continuation of the tournament. According to the official FIBA 3x3 World Cup schedule, after finishing second in Group D, France was entered into the men's play-in game against Madagascar on June 5. That duel brings a different kind of pressure because the elimination phase generally leaves no room for correction. The French showed in the group that they are capable of winning in tight finishes, especially against Belgium and Puerto Rico, where the difference was only one and two points respectively. Still, the game against Lithuania revealed that for a deeper run they will need greater stability against teams that can quickly build a scoring run.

For France, the 15:21 defeat is also a useful signal before the knockout part of the competition. A team that has three victories and one defeat in the group retains competitive rhythm, but it must quickly find an answer to the problems that appeared against Lithuania. In 3x3 basketball, tactical adjustments between games often relate to faster shot selection, better switching on defense and control of rebounds after misses, because every change of possession immediately opens space for transition into attack. France showed in earlier games that it can attack at a high level, but against Lithuania it did not manage to maintain the required tempo until the end. For that reason, the play-in game will also be a test of reaction after the first defeat at the tournament.

The 3x3 basketball format increases the importance of every possession

FIBA 3x3 rules make games like this extremely intense and explain why a 21:15 result carries great weight. According to the official FIBA 3x3 rules, the game is played on one basket and half a court, with three players in play and one substitute per team. Regular time lasts ten minutes, the shot clock is limited to 12 seconds, and play continues without a classic pause after a made basket. Shots inside the arc are worth one point, while those behind the arc are worth two points, so several accurate outside shots can change the course of the game in a very short period. That is precisely why teams that manage to maintain defensive discipline and attacking efficiency at the same time often gain a decisive advantage.

In such a framework, a victory up to 21 points does not mean only a larger number of made baskets, but also the ability to manage the rhythm of a game that unfolds without long stoppages. Against France, Lithuania showed that it can withstand physical contact, quickly change phases of play and finish attacks efficiently enough not to allow the opponent a full comeback. France, according to the final result, stayed within reach in certain parts of the match, but it failed to stop the Lithuanian surge toward the limit of 21 points. In 3x3 basketball, the finish is often played out in a matter of seconds, and the team that first reaches the threshold of victory forces the opponent into riskier decisions. Lithuania handled that part of the game maturely and without losing control of the score.

Warsaw as the center of the tenth edition of the World Cup

FIBA announced in the official tournament preview that the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026 is being held from June 1 to 7 in Warsaw, and the competition brings together 40 national teams, 20 in the men's and 20 in the women's competition. It is the tenth edition of this global competition, which is taking place during a period of strong growth for 3x3 basketball as an urban and Olympic format. According to FIBA, the group-stage games were scheduled from June 1 to 4, while the elimination rounds are scheduled from June 5 to 7. The host is the Polish capital, and official tournament information states that the court has been set up in central Warsaw, at Plac Defilad, near the Palace of Culture and Science. Such a setting fits the concept of 3x3 basketball, which is often presented as a combination of top-level sport and urban space.

The tournament in Warsaw comes after the 2025 edition in Ulaanbaatar, where Spain won the men's title and the Netherlands the women's title. In its preview for 2026, FIBA emphasized that Poland brings together defending champions, Olympic winners, continental champions and national teams that earned their places through qualifications. In the men's competition, this is especially visible through the group schedule, which includes traditionally strong teams such as Serbia, the United States of America, the Netherlands, Lithuania, France, Germany and Latvia. Group D was particularly interesting because it combined European candidates for a high placement with awkward representatives from the Americas. In such competition, Lithuania's perfect record gains additional value.

What the victory means for the elimination phase

According to the official competition schedule, after winning first place in Group D, Lithuania enters the quarterfinal stage as a team waiting for an opponent from the play-in phase. This gives it an important advantage because it avoids an additional elimination duel on June 5, while other national teams must fight their way through high-risk games. In a short and physically demanding 3x3 tournament, such an advantage is not negligible: one fewer game can mean more time for recovery, preparation and analysis of the opponent. Still, the format of the competition does not allow relaxation because in the quarterfinals every mistake is punished immediately. Lithuania will enter the continuation of the tournament with a record that places it among the most confident teams, but also with the burden of expectation that follows undefeated teams.

France, on the other hand, will have to confirm its quality through the play-in. The official schedule for June 5 lists the game between France and Madagascar in the men's competition, and the winner of such games continues the path toward the quarterfinals. The French have enough experience and quality to remain dangerous, but the defeat to Lithuania showed that against the most organized teams they must find a more effective way to control the rhythm. For Lithuania, this victory is valuable confirmation that it can win even when the stakes are highest in the group, while for France it represents a warning before entering the part of the tournament in which there is no longer room for a weaker evening. The final stage in Warsaw thus enters a phase in which the 21:15 result from Group D remains one of the key indicators of the balance of power among European medal candidates.
