Latvia in Warsaw stopped Czechia and confirmed its place among the serious contenders in Group B

Latvia defeated Czechia 21:15 in men's Group B of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026 in Warsaw, thereby achieving one of the more important victories in the final stage of the group phase. According to the official schedule of the FIBA 3x3 competition, the game was played on June 4 in the 17:55 local-time slot, in a program that on the same day also brought the final outcomes in several groups. The 21:15 result is especially significant in the 3x3 basketball format because the team that first reaches 21 points in regular time ends the game, which further emphasizes Latvian efficiency. Czechia entered the matchup with important victories from the first part of the group, but against Latvia it did not manage to maintain the rhythm until the very finish. With the victory, the Latvians kept their position near the top of the Group B standings and confirmed their status as one of the most dangerous European national teams in the men's part of the tournament.

The fast rhythm and the rules of 3x3 basketball gave the result additional weight

In 3x3 basketball, every game is extremely short, tactically compressed and under constant pressure from the shot clock, so a difference of six points carries more weight than in classic five-on-five basketball. According to the official FIBA 3x3 rules, a game lasts one period of ten minutes, the attack is limited to 12 seconds, and the winner is the team that leads after time expires or the first team to reach 21 points. A shot inside the arc and a free throw are worth one point, while a shot behind the arc is worth two points, which is why the balance of power can change in only a few possessions. Against Czechia, Latvia showed better control of the tempo precisely in such an environment, and finishing on 21 points means that it closed the game before Czechia could bring back uncertainty in the score. Such an outcome confirms that the Latvian performance was not only convincing in terms of the result, but also adapted to the specific demands of the 3x3 game, in which mistakes rarely remain without consequences.

Group B was one of the most demanding in the men's part of the tournament

In the draw announcement, FIBA described Group B as a very strong group that included the United States, Latvia, Mongolia, Czechia and host Poland. According to FIBA's official announcement about the groups, additional weight was given to that competition by the fact that the United States came to Warsaw as the winners of the FIBA 3x3 Champions Cup 2026, while Latvia was listed as the Olympic champion from Tokyo in the 3x3 discipline. Czechia, according to FIBA's information on the qualifiers, earned its appearance at the World Cup through the qualifying tournament in Singapore, where it secured one of the last tickets to Warsaw with a victory against Italy. Host Poland had the advantage of a home environment, and Mongolia additionally strengthened the competition with an awkward style of play and a victory over Poland in the first part of the group. In such a schedule, Latvia had no room to relax, especially after a loss to the United States at the start and overtime against Poland.

Latvia recovered after a demanding entry into the tournament

According to official FIBA 3x3 data, Latvia opened the group with a 14:17 loss to the United States, and then defeated Poland 22:20 after overtime. Those two matchups alone showed how balanced Group B was, because every game had a direct impact on the standings and the further path toward the knockout phase. The 21:15 victory over Czechia came as a key result on Latvia's second competition day, before the same national team later defeated Mongolia 21:12. After four games, Latvia, according to FIBA's final standings for Group B, had a 3-1 record, a total of 77 points and an average of 19.3 points per game. It therefore finished second, behind the United States, but ahead of Czechia, even though the three best national teams in the group had the same number of wins.

Czechia remained in play despite the defeat

Against Latvia, Czechia suffered the only defeat that ultimately dropped it behind Latvia in the final standings, but it did not cancel everything it had done in the group. According to the official schedule, Czechia had previously defeated Mongolia 17:14, then surprised the United States 21:20, and after the loss to Latvia it defeated Poland 21:15. The final 3-1 record, a total of 74 points and an average of 18.5 points per game were enough for third place in Group B. FIBA's standings at the same time show how much the nuances decided the order, because the United States, Latvia and Czechia each had three wins, while total points and tiebreaking rules separated the top of the group. The 15:21 defeat therefore did not mean the end of Czech ambitions, but rather a move onto a more demanding path through the playoffs.

The schedule after the group sends Latvia and Czechia into the playoffs

According to the official schedule of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026, the knockout part of the competition begins on June 5 with play-in games, while the final stage is scheduled for June 7. Latvia will play against New Zealand in the men's play-in on Friday, June 5 at 19:25 according to the event schedule, while Czechia faces the Netherlands on the same day at 19:00. Such an outcome means that Latvia's victory against Czechia was not just an isolated result, but also a factor that shaped the path toward the quarterfinals. In a tournament format in which the group phase is followed by elimination games, the difference between second and third place can significantly affect the difficulty of the next opponent. FIBA had earlier announced that the group phase would be played from June 1 to 4, and the knockout part from June 5 to 7, which means that the Latvian victory arrived at the last moment before entering the phase in which there is no more room for correction.

Latvia's experience and the Czech qualifying story

The Latvian national team is competing in Warsaw with players whom the official FIBA 3x3 website lists as Francis Lācis, Kārlis Lasmanis, Nauris Miezis and Zigmars Raimu. It is a core that has great experience in international 3x3 basketball, and in the group announcement FIBA particularly highlighted Latvia's Olympic reputation from Tokyo. Czechia, according to the official team page, registered a roster in Warsaw consisting of Štěpán Borovka, Filip Novotný, Adam Růžička and Lukáš Stegbauer. After the qualifying tournament in Singapore, FIBA announced that Czechia had earned its place at the World Cup with a 20:16 victory against Italy, with 11 points from Filip Novotný in the decisive matchup. That qualifying context explains why Czechia remained a serious opponent even after the loss to Latvia: it did not come to Warsaw by chance, but through high-pressure games.

Warsaw as the urban stage of the World Cup

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026 is being held from June 1 to 7 in Warsaw, and FIBA and the organizers state that the competition is being played in the city center, in the area next to the Palace of Culture and Science. According to the announcement by the City of Warsaw, Central Square has been set up as the sports center of the event, with the main court and an accompanying zone for spectators. FIBA had earlier confirmed that this is Poland's first hosting of the most important global competition in 3x3 basketball, which gives the tournament additional organizational and symbolic value. The official announcements emphasize that 40 national teams are competing in Warsaw, 20 each in the men's and women's competitions, which confirms the breadth of the competition and its global character. In such an environment, the matchup between Latvia and Czechia was part of a broader program that combines a sporting result, urban space and a basketball format developed precisely for a dynamic audience and a rapid sequence of events.

A result that changes the tone of the group finale

Latvia's 21:15 victory over Czechia cannot be viewed only through the final score, because it came at a moment when the final positions in Group B were being arranged ahead of the playoffs. With it, Latvia ended the possibility that Czechia would move ahead of it in the final standings, and then additionally strengthened its position with a victory against Mongolia. Czechia, on the other hand, despite the defeat retained enough points and results capital for the continuation of the competition, primarily thanks to victories over the United States, Mongolia and Poland. FIBA's official standings show that Group B finished with three national teams on a 3-1 record, which says enough about the density of the competition and the importance of every point. Latvia won the direct duel with Czechia in that fight, and that result could prove to be one of the key details in determining its path through the final stage of the tournament.
