IBA wants to bring Jon Jones into a boxing ring in Russia

The International Boxing Association, known by the acronym IBA, has announced that it is ready to organize a professional boxing match in Russia for Jon Jones, the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. According to the IBA announcement of 19 May 2026, the organization is following Jones's latest statements about a possible move into boxing and believes that his appearance under boxing rules could attract major international attention.

At the center of the story is one of the most famous fighters in the history of mixed martial arts, but also an organization that in recent years has been trying to expand its role beyond classic amateur boxing. The IBA states that Jones's potential boxing debut could be held in Russia if the American confirms that he is seriously considering an appearance in the ring. For now, however, there is no officially confirmed opponent, date, or contract for such a match.

IBA President Umar Kremlev stated, according to the organization's press release, that possible bouts between Jones and Daniel Cormier or Francis Ngannou, but under boxing rules, are fights widely discussed in combat sports. The IBA also announced that this possibility would be discussed with Jones in person when he arrives in Russia on 27 June for the IBA Bare Knuckle tournament.

Jones as global ambassador of the IBA Bare Knuckle project

Jones's connection with the IBA did not begin with this announcement. In March 2026, the organization announced that Jon Jones had become a global ambassador for the IBA Bare Knuckle project, its bare-knuckle fighting platform. According to the IBA announcement at the time, Jones was scheduled to take part in the IBA Bare Knuckle #4 event in Saint Petersburg on 28 March as a guest co-host and one of the main promotional names of the evening.

In that announcement, Jones said that he was honored to join the league as a global ambassador and that he wanted to take part with the IBA in building, as formulated in the press release, a new global era of bare-knuckle fighting. The IBA presented the cooperation as an important step in the development of its project, but also as a signal that it wants to attract well-known names from MMA and other combat disciplines.

It is important to distinguish between two levels of this cooperation. Jones's ambassadorial role in the IBA Bare Knuckle project does not automatically mean that he will fight in bare-knuckle bouts, nor that his professional boxing debut has been agreed. At present, this is a promotional engagement and an expression of the IBA's interest in organizing his appearance in professional boxing if the sporting and contractual conditions are met.

What the IBA specifically announced

According to the IBA press release, the organization expressed "strong interest" and readiness to stage a professional boxing match for Jones. The IBA emphasized that the announcement follows Jones's comments about a possible move into boxing, including the mention of a fight against Francis Ngannou, the former UFC champion who has already competed in professional boxing against major heavyweight names.

Kremlev said in the press release that the IBA first wants to understand how serious Jones's plans are. According to him, a conversation with Jones should take place during his arrival in Russia on 27 June, at the IBA Bare Knuckle tournament. If the interest is real, the IBA claims it will organize a major event in Russia with Jones as one of the main figures.

The announcement does not state the venue of the possible boxing match, does not mention a financial offer, and does not confirm negotiations with another fighter. For that reason, at this stage the announcement should be viewed as a publicly expressed interest by the organizer, not as a confirmed fight. In professional boxing and combat sports, such announcements often also serve to test the market, audience reaction, and the readiness of potential partners.

Why Francis Ngannou and Daniel Cormier are being mentioned

The most prominent name in this story, alongside Jones, is certainly Francis Ngannou. For years, he was linked to a possible MMA bout against Jones, but that meeting did not happen in the UFC. After leaving the UFC, Ngannou opened a new chapter in his career, including appearances in professional boxing. That is precisely why his name carries special weight in the context of a possible Jones boxing debut.

Daniel Cormier is the other important reference because he is one of Jones's greatest sporting rivals. Their rivalry marked the UFC light heavyweight division, and their fights still have strong symbolic value for the audience that follows MMA. The idea that such a rivalry could be transferred into a boxing ring is attractive from a marketing standpoint, although for now there is no confirmation that Cormier would be interested in such an appearance.

The IBA mentioned both names in the context of fights "being talked about", which should not be interpreted as confirmation of negotiations. For such a match to be agreed, sporting, contractual, medical, regulatory, and financial conditions would have to be resolved. Questions of eligibility to compete would be especially important, because the contracts of top fighters are often an obstacle to appearing at events outside their parent organizations.

Jones's career and status in the UFC

Jon Jones is one of the most decorated fighters in UFC history. According to his official UFC profile and statistics, he competed as a light heavyweight and heavyweight, and his career has been marked by victories over a number of former champions and leading fighters. In professional MMA, he has a record of 28 wins, one loss, and one no contest, with his only loss being a disqualification in the fight against Matt Hamill.

In its official records, the UFC lists Jones's key fights in the light heavyweight division, including title defenses and victories over Daniel Cormier, Glover Teixeira, Lyoto Machida, and other major names. Jones returned in 2023 after a multi-year break and won the heavyweight title by defeating Ciryl Gane, thereby strengthening his status as one of the most successful fighters in the organization's history.

According to reports by specialized combat sports media, Jones has publicly spoken, after the latest changes in his career, about the possibility of leaving his UFC contract and about his interest in fighting Ngannou. Such statements have further fueled speculation about boxing, but contractual status remains one of the key open questions. Without a clear resolution of his relationship with the UFC, it is difficult to speak of a realistic date for any appearance under another promoter.

Boxing as a new direction for MMA stars

Jones's possible move into boxing fits into a broader trend in which well-known MMA fighters seek major matches outside their original disciplines. Boxing, especially in the heavyweight division, offers a different commercial model, greater international visibility, and a clearer format for one-off spectacles. On the other hand, moving from MMA to boxing does not guarantee sporting success, because it requires adaptation to a completely different fighting dynamic, defense, footwork, and longer rounds without wrestling, clinching in the MMA sense, and ground fighting.

Ngannou has shown that an MMA fighter can attract enormous interest from the boxing audience, but also that the boxing elite represents an extremely demanding level of competition. In such an environment, Jones would bring a huge name and an exceptional combat pedigree, but he would face questions about boxing technique, preparation, and opponent selection. That is why the choice of his first opponent would be crucial for the credibility of the entire project.

For the IBA, a possible Jones appearance would also have broader promotional significance. In recent years, the organization has been positioning itself increasingly strongly through professional and alternative combat formats, including IBA Pro and IBA Bare Knuckle. Bringing in a name like Jones could increase the visibility of those projects, especially in markets outside traditional boxing centers.

The political and institutional context of the IBA

The story of Jones's possible appearance in Russia cannot be completely separated from the institutional position of the IBA. In 2023, the International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition of the IBA as the international federation for Olympic boxing, citing issues of governance, finances, and integrity. This means that the IBA is no longer the Olympic-recognized governing body for boxing within the Olympic movement.

In February 2025, the International Olympic Committee provisionally recognized World Boxing as the international federation for boxing in the Olympic movement. According to announcements by the IOC and World Boxing, that decision was a key step toward preserving boxing in the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This context is important because it shows that the IBA, although still active in organizing competitions, is outside the Olympic system that for decades was the main framework of international amateur boxing.

For that reason, the announcement about Jones can also be read as part of the IBA's strategy to build separate sporting and commercial visibility through professional events and well-known names. Instead of relying on the Olympic framework, the organization is trying to create events that can be sold as global combat spectacles. In that sense, Jones is an ideal promotional name: well known enough beyond the narrow circle of MMA fans, while also connected with stories about a new challenge, a possible boxing debut, and major rivalries.

What still has to happen before a possible match

The first step will be Jones's arrival in Russia for the IBA Bare Knuckle tournament on 27 June 2026, if that plan materializes according to the IBA announcement. Only after talks with the organization's leadership could it become clearer whether there is a real intention to enter negotiations over a professional boxing match. Until then, it is not possible to speak of a confirmed fight, but only of interest and the organizer's publicly stated readiness.

The second important condition concerns Jones's contractual status. If he is still bound by obligations to the UFC or other partners, appearing in a boxing match outside that organization could require permission, contract termination, or a special agreement. In combat sports, precisely such contractual obstacles are often the decisive factor, regardless of the fighter's wishes or the audience's interest.

The third element is sporting regulation. A professional boxing match would have to have rules, a commission or competent regulatory body, medical examinations, an agreed weight class, number of rounds, and fighter licensing. If the event were held in Russia, additional questions would arise regarding international broadcast distribution, sanctions, travel, sponsors, and broadcast availability in different markets.

Major interest, but still no confirmed fight

For now, the IBA announcement is more a signal of ambition than a completed sporting agreement. The organization wants to use Jones's interest in boxing and his role as global ambassador of the IBA Bare Knuckle project to open space for a major event in Russia. The names Francis Ngannou and Daniel Cormier further increase attention, but without confirmed negotiations they remain part of a broader promotional framework.

For Jones, a professional boxing appearance would be one of the most important turns in his career after years of dominance in MMA. For the IBA, it would be an attempt to create a globally recognizable event in a period in which the organization is looking for new models of influence outside the Olympic system. For the combat sports audience, the most important question remains simple: will the announcement turn into a contracted match, or will it remain another big but unrealized combat-sports idea.
