Pochettino announces the U.S. roster for the World Cup on May 26: the final phase of the hosts' selection begins

United States men's national soccer team head coach Mauricio Pochettino will announce the final 26-player roster for the 2026 World Cup on May 26, U.S. Soccer has confirmed. The roster announcement has been presented as a live television event from New York, and according to the federation's announcement, the broadcast will air on FOX from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The fan event itself will take place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York's South Street Seaport, where the public program will begin two hours earlier.

The announcement comes at a moment when the period of major decisions is coming to an end for the national teams that will compete at the expanded World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In its information on squad lists for the 2026 tournament, FIFA stated that each national team may register a maximum of 26 footballers for the final tournament, while the broader preliminary lists served as the basis for the final selection. For the U.S. national team, that moment is especially sensitive because it is competing as one of the hosts and because Pochettino was hired precisely to raise the team to a higher level ahead of the tournament on home soil.

U.S. Soccer announced that the presentation of the roster will be connected with a fan event and a broader communications project by the federation, which shows how much attention is being devoted to the national team's performance at football's biggest competition. Instead of the usual roster announcement by press release, the federation has decided to turn it into a public program with former internationals, television personalities and additional content for fans. According to the federation's announcement, Alexi Lalas, Stu Holden, Carli Lloyd, Rob Stone, Jenny Taft and Landon Donovan will take part in the program, along with additional guest appearances.

A roster that determines the direction of the U.S. tournament

Pochettino's selection will be the first final U.S. World Cup roster since the Argentine coach took over the bench. In September 2024, FIFA announced that U.S. Soccer had appointed Pochettino as head coach of the men's national team, after he had previously worked at Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. His arrival was presented at the time as one of the most important moves by the U.S. federation in preparing for a tournament that will partly be played on American territory.

For that reason, the 26-player roster will not be only a technical formality, but also an indicator of Pochettino's assessment of what kind of football the United States wants to play at its home World Cup. Players from European leagues, Major League Soccer and other environments are in contention, and the head coach must balance form, experience, physical condition and tactical adaptability. For host national teams, the pressure is often different than for other participants, because sporting expectations are intertwined with major public interest and the organizational role of the host country.

According to U.S. Soccer, Pochettino had earlier spoken about the need to find the "right 26" players for the World Cup. That wording suggests that decisions will not be based only on individual quality, but also on the function of each player within the group. In a tournament format with 48 national teams and 104 matches, squad depth, physical endurance and the ability to adapt quickly can play an important role, especially for teams that want to get through the group and remain competitive in the knockout stage.

The World Cup in a new format and a greater logistical challenge

The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition with 48 national teams, and FIFA states that a total of 104 matches will be played in 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Such a format increases the number of participants, extends the competition schedule and broadens the geographical scope of the tournament. For coaching staffs, this means that the player roster must respond to both sporting and logistical demands, from travel between cities to recovery between matches.

The United States is in Group D, and according to the official schedule and federation information, it will play its first match on June 12 against Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium. After that come matches against Australia and Turkey, so the U.S. national team will already have opponents of different profiles in the group stage. Paraguay traditionally brings South American toughness and discipline, Australia is known for its physical play and strong competitive character, while Turkey has a technically and tactically varied squad.

U.S. Soccer stated that before the start of the tournament, the U.S. national team will play two final preparation matches. The first is against Senegal on May 31 in Charlotte, and the second against Germany on June 6 in Chicago. Those tests come after the roster announcement and will serve as the final opportunity to tune the starting lineup, check physical condition and make final decisions about the hierarchy within the team.

Why 26 players are more important than it seems

The number of 26 players in modern tournament football does not indicate only bench depth. It affects the distribution of minutes, the balance between positions and the staff's ability to react to injuries, suspensions or tactical changes. FIFA's rules on squad lists create a clear framework, but within that framework head coaches must decide whether to give priority to an additional defender, midfielder, forward or specialist for certain matches.

For Pochettino, the question of balance between players who have experience of major competitions and those who are currently in the best form will be especially important. In recent years, the U.S. national team has had a core of footballers from strong European leagues, but also a group of MLS players who know domestic conditions, stadiums and the rhythm of travel well. Such a blend can be an advantage, but only if roles are clearly defined and excessive dependence on individuals is avoided.

Media interest ahead of the roster announcement has been further increased by questions about the form and health status of certain candidates. The Guardian reported on May 21 that defender Chris Richards had suffered an ankle injury at Crystal Palace, with his status for the World Cup described as uncertain. Since he is a player who is important for the U.S. defense, such information ahead of the roster announcement further emphasizes how much final decisions may depend on medical assessments, and not only on tactical preferences.

A public announcement as part of a broader football moment

The way U.S. Soccer will present the roster also says something about football's changed position in the American sports space. The federation has announced a public event with fans, a television program and promotional content, turning the roster announcement into a media event, not just an administrative obligation. Such an approach is more common in sports with a long American television tradition, but ahead of the 2026 World Cup, football is receiving similar treatment.

That does not mean the public presentation will reduce the sporting pressure. On the contrary, the visibility of the event may further intensify debates about every omission and every unexpected decision. In the American context, special weight is carried by players who play for European clubs, but also by those from MLS who may be closer to the domestic audience and more familiar to fans who follow the national championship. Pochettino will therefore have to explain the logic of his selection, especially if some names considered likely candidates do not make the roster.

U.S. Soccer announced that the program will also include elements connected with the documentary series "U.S. Against the World: Four Years with the Men’s National Soccer Team", which, according to the federation's announcement, debuted on HBO on May 12 and is available on HBO Max. In this way, the national team is presented not only as a sports team, but also as a narrative project ahead of a tournament that will attract global attention. For the players who are selected, making the roster will also mean entering the center of that public pressure.

Pochettino's profile and expectations of the hosts

Pochettino did not arrive at the U.S. national team as an unknown coaching name. In announcing his appointment, FIFA emphasized that he is an Argentine specialist with experience leading major European clubs, including Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. That experience is important because the U.S. federation expects from him the ability to work with players from different leagues, cultures and competitive systems.

His coaching reputation was built on intense work without the ball, organized pressing and player development in a demanding environment. However, national-team football differs from club football because the head coach does not work with players on a daily basis and must quickly create automatisms. The 26-player roster therefore has to be clear enough to allow immediate implementation of the playing idea, but also flexible enough for changes during the tournament.

Expectations of the United States do not arise only from hosting. The national team has a generation of players that has gained experience on the international stage, and a tournament on home soil is seen as an opportunity to take a step forward. Still, the mere fact that the team is playing in front of its home crowd does not guarantee success. Group D will be the first test of maturity, and the final roster will show how much Pochettino trusts continuity and how much he wants to open space for players who are at the best moment of form.

What follows after May 26

After the roster announcement, the focus will quickly shift from debate about names to match preparation. The meeting with Senegal on May 31 will be the first test of the selected group, and the duel with Germany on June 6 should offer an even clearer insight into how Pochettino imagines the team against a high-level opponent. Such tests can change perceptions of the starting lineup, but not the fact that the 26 selected players will carry responsibility for the hosts' performance.

For the players who are included, the period between the announcement and the first match will be short and intense. During it, the role of each individual will be decided, from certain starters to players who may be important as substitutes in the closing stages of matches. In tournament football, such roles often become decisive, especially when matches are decided in the second half or extra time.

The final announcement on May 26 will therefore mark the beginning of the final phase of U.S. preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Until then, Pochettino and his staff will have to align sporting arguments, medical reports and assessments of the players' mental readiness. After that, it will no longer be about projections and possible combinations, but about the team that will open the U.S. campaign against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles.
