France convincingly defeated Lithuania and returned to the battle for the top of Group D at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026

The French women's national team achieved an important victory in Group D at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026 in Warsaw, defeating Lithuania by a score of 21:12. After an earlier defeat in their first appearance, the French women responded with a convincing performance and kept realistic chances of qualifying for the final stage of the competition, which is being held from June 1 to 7 in the capital of Poland.

According to FIBA's official schedule and results, the duel between Lithuania and France was played on June 2 as part of the women's section of Group D. France reached victory with a confident game on both sides of the court, and the final nine-point difference confirms how dominant the national team was during most of the encounter.

A response after an unsuccessful opening of the tournament

In competitions such as 3x3 basketball, where games last only ten minutes or end when one team reaches 21 points, the rhythm of the tournament is extremely fast. Precisely because of this, the reaction after a defeat often represents one of the key indicators of the real quality of a national team.

France arrived in Warsaw as one of the national teams expected to fight for the highest positions. The defeat at the opening of the competition against Japan complicated the situation in the group, but the clash with Lithuania showed that the French selection still possesses the quality needed to fight for advancement. From the very beginning of the encounter, the French women imposed a high intensity, managed to limit the Lithuanian offense, and gradually built an advantage that only grew until the end of the game.

Lithuania had previously achieved a valuable victory against Canada at the tournament, which is why it entered this encounter with additional confidence. Nevertheless, the French defense and efficiency in attack proved to be too great a challenge for the Lithuanian national team.

Group D among the most evenly matched at the championship

According to FIBA's official data, Group D of the women's part of the tournament includes France, Canada, Japan, Ukraine, and Lithuania. Already after the first days of competition, it became clear that this is one of the most unpredictable groups of the championship.

Lithuania opened the competition with a 19:17 victory against Canada, immediately attracting attention. On the other hand, France was defeated by Japan in the first round by a score of 13:16. That is precisely why the head-to-head clash between Lithuania and France carried additional weight, because it gave the winner a significant step toward the continuation of the competition.

With the 21:12 victory, France managed to even its win-loss record and remain in an equal race with the other national teams in the group. Since in 3x3 basketball decisions are often made on the basis of the total number of points scored and head-to-head records, a convincing victory can have additional value in the later resolution of the standings.

The specific features of 3x3 basketball come to the fore

The FIBA 3x3 World Cup represents the most important world competition in this discipline, which has recorded strong international growth in recent years. The format of the game differs from traditional five-on-five basketball. Games are played on one basket, each team has three players on the court and one substitute, and possession of the ball changes extremely quickly.

Such a system rewards aggressive defense, physical readiness, and precision in two-point shooting, which has special importance in 3x3 basketball because it is worth twice as much as shots from inside the arc. Because of this, score differences can be created in a very short period of time.

France was more successful than Lithuania precisely in these segments. Control of the rhythm and efficient execution enabled it to take the initiative early and not allow its opponents a more serious return into the game.

Warsaw hosts the world elite

This year's World Cup is being held in Warsaw, a city that during the first week of June became the center of world 3x3 basketball. A total of 40 national teams are participating in the tournament, 20 each in the men's and women's competitions.

According to information from the organizers, the competition brings together the world's leading national teams, including current European and world champions, Olympic medal winners, and national teams that want to establish themselves in the fight for appearances at future major competitions. Alongside the fight for the title of world champion, the national teams are also collecting important points for international ranking lists, which can have a significant role in the qualification processes for upcoming competitions under FIBA's auspices.

Poland received the hosting rights after a series of successfully organized international 3x3 events, and the championship in Warsaw represents one of the largest sporting events of the year in the country.

France once again among the candidates for the final stage

Although it is too early to make final assessments about the outcome of Group D, the performance against Lithuania showed that France still belongs to the circle of national teams that can achieve a significant result. Particularly important is the fact that the team showed mental stability after the defeat at the opening of the tournament.

At competitions like this, continuity of performances is often more important than individual games. France now enters the continuation of the group stage with renewed confidence and the knowledge that it can control games against quality opponents. Lithuania, on the other hand, despite the defeat remains competitive thanks to its earlier victory over Canada and will seek new points for advancement in the remaining encounters.

The development of events so far in Group D suggests that the battle for the places leading to the knockout stage will remain open until the final games. Precisely for that reason, France's result against Lithuania could prove to be one of the more important moments of the early part of the women's tournament at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2026.
