Hyundai becomes the official automotive partner of the UEFA Champions League until 2031
Hyundai Motor Company is entering a major new chapter in its long-standing investment in football after announcing a multi-year partnership with the UEFA Champions League. According to the company's official announcement of September 7, 2026, starting with the 2026/27 season Hyundai will assume the role of official automotive partner of Europe's most important club competition, with the agreement running until the end of the 2030/31 season. The partnership therefore covers five competitive seasons and connects the global car manufacturer with a competition that brings together Europe's leading clubs and footballers from around the world. The announcement comes immediately before the start of the league phase of the 2026/27 season, whose opening matchday, according to UEFA's schedule, is played from September 8 to 10, 2026. For Hyundai, this represents a continuation of almost three decades of presence in international football, as well as entry into a partnership specifically focused on the European club market.
Five seasons alongside Europe's strongest club competition
Under the agreement beginning in the 2026/27 season, Hyundai receives the status of official automotive partner of the UEFA Champions League, namely the partner in the automotive category of the competition's commercial programme. Hyundai Motor Europe states that the cooperation is conceived as a platform for connecting with fans, customers, the sales network and employees across Europe. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, so the value of the five-year arrangement is unknown. For now, the official announcements place emphasis on presence around matches and the presentation of vehicles and new technologies.
José Muñoz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor Company, emphasised on the occasion of the announcement that football has been part of Hyundai's story for almost 30 years and that sport has a rare ability to connect people across languages, borders and generations. In its announcement, Hyundai describes the UEFA Champions League as an ideal platform for engaging with a highly involved European football audience, particularly following the company's activities during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Muñoz also highlighted his personal connection with the competition, noting that he comes from Madrid and has followed the UEFA Champions League throughout his life. The emphasis of his message was not only on advertising vehicles, but on connecting football audiences with product development and the company's technological direction. Hyundai places the entire partnership under its global "Progress for Humanity" vision, through which it seeks to connect mobility and technological development with the idea of broader social accessibility and connecting communities.
Champions League at a time when the league phase brings together 36 clubs
The partnership begins in the third season of the UEFA Champions League played under the format featuring a single league phase of 36 clubs. According to UEFA's official regulations, each club in that phase plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. All 36 teams are placed in a single table: the top eight after the league phase qualify directly for the round of 16, clubs placed ninth to 24th enter an additional play-off, while teams placed 25th to 36th end their European season. For the 2026/27 season, UEFA has scheduled a total of eight league-phase matchdays, from September 8, 2026 to January 27, 2027. The knockout stages will then lead towards the final scheduled for June 5, 2027 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
The league phase brings 144 matches, or 18 fixtures in each of the eight matchdays, giving partners a presence throughout a large part of the season. Hyundai states in its announcement that approximately one in three people worldwide has an interest in the UEFA Champions League, although the company presents that figure as its own estimate as part of the partnership presentation. At the same time, the competition connects the European club structure with an international television and digital audience, which is particularly relevant for Hyundai because of its global business operations and strong European development and manufacturing base.
Hyundai has used football as a global platform since 1999
The new partnership does not represent Hyundai's first major entry into international football. According to the company's own data, its cooperation with FIFA began in 1999 and reached 27 years during 2026. At the FIFA World Cup 2026, held in Canada, Mexico and the United States, Hyundai served as the official mobility partner and announced the largest fleet of vehicles it had ever deployed at a single FIFA competition. At the same time, the company expanded its presence into robotics, including Boston Dynamics technologies, thereby connecting its football sponsorship with areas that extend beyond the traditional automotive industry. Hyundai states that its FIFA cooperation has been extended until 2030, meaning that the partnership with the UEFA Champions League will run in parallel with the company's global football activities for several seasons.
Hyundai therefore presents the new cooperation as a continuation of its existing football strategy rather than as an isolated campaign. The UEFA Champions League also provides a different type of continuity from national-team tournaments because it is played throughout a large part of the year and links numerous European markets every season. The company also intends to use the football stage to showcase its technological transformation, including robotics, artificial intelligence, software and smart mobility solutions.
European development, design and production at the centre of the partnership
Although Hyundai Motor Company is a global company headquartered in South Korea, the European part of its operations plays an important role in the new sponsorship. Hyundai Motor Europe has its regional headquarters in Offenbach, Germany, while the company's European technical and design facilities are located in Rüsselsheim. Production for the European market also takes place at factories in the Czech Republic and Turkey, and according to Hyundai's latest corporate announcement, the company operates in 42 European markets through more than 2,000 sales and after-sales locations. For 2025, the company reported sales of 603,542 vehicles in the broadly defined EU35 area and a market share of 4.2 percent. More than 70 percent of the vehicles Hyundai sells in that region are models developed, tested and manufactured in Europe, according to company data.
Xavier Martinet, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor Europe, linked that European foundation with the new football partnership. According to him, the UEFA Champions League and Hyundai are connected by a drive for progress, performance and bringing people together, while the company enters the partnership with its strongest product line-up to date. During the 2026/27 season, Hyundai plans to introduce five major new models for the European market, with the fully electric IONIQ 3 becoming the brand's first representative within the partnership. The sponsorship therefore also gains a very concrete product element: football visibility will be directly connected with the launch of a new generation of vehicles. For Hyundai, this is a way to connect its European development and manufacturing base with one of Europe's most recognisable sporting products.
IONIQ 3 is the first to take the stage in the new partnership
Hyundai has specifically highlighted the IONIQ 3 as the first car to represent the brand in its cooperation with the UEFA Champions League. It is a fully electric compact hatchback designed for European customers, publicly unveiled during Milan Design Week 2026. According to company data, production began in August in İzmit, Turkey, making the IONIQ 3 the first battery-electric car manufactured at that Hyundai plant. The model is also the first of five major new products Hyundai plans to launch in Europe during the 2026/27 season. This schedule means that the start of the football partnership coincides with an important renewal cycle in the manufacturer's product range.
According to factory specifications, the IONIQ 3 has a drag coefficient of 0.263 Cd, a declared range of up to 497 kilometres according to WLTP, 441 litres of luggage capacity and a 14.6-inch display with the PLEOS Connect system. Actual driving range may depend on configuration, weather conditions and driving style. With this model, Hyundai is targeting the competitive European compact segment and is positioning the IONIQ 3 within the partnership as the starting point for communication about its new European line-up.
The partnership covers more than traditional automotive advertising
In announcing the cooperation, Hyundai emphasises that it wants to showcase the company's future direction, ranging from robotics and so-called physical artificial intelligence to software and smart mobility solutions. This corresponds with changes taking place throughout the automotive industry, in which manufacturers increasingly seek to define their identity through software, connectivity, automation and services, rather than solely through traditional vehicle characteristics. Because of its audience and the frequency of events, football sponsorship provides considerable scope for presenting such technologies outside motor shows and specialised technology events. Hyundai already used a similar approach at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where alongside vehicles it promoted Boston Dynamics' Atlas and Spot robotic platforms. The UEFA Champions League now provides it with a multi-year European platform on which this type of communication can continue during every club season.
It is important to distinguish between what has already been agreed and what will only be developed through partnership activations. Hyundai and UEFA have not yet publicly announced a complete schedule of marketing campaigns, fan events, vehicle fleets or other specific activities that will be implemented during all five seasons. Official information confirms the status of automotive partner, the duration of the agreement and the IONIQ 3 as the first model to be highlighted in the cooperation. Other details will probably be announced as individual stages of the competition and product launches begin. The September 7 announcement can therefore be viewed as the framework of a long-term partnership rather than a final list of all the activities fans will see through 2031.
UC3 leads the commercial side of UEFA club competitions
UC3, the commercial joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs, formerly known as the European Club Association, plays an important role in implementing the partnership. According to UEFA's official information, UC3 was established to oversee the management, sale and delivery of commercial rights for UEFA's elite men's and women's club competitions. Guy-Laurent Epstein, one of UC3's two Chief Executive Officers, highlighted Hyundai's long history of supporting football and the belief that sport can connect people when the company's entry into the Champions League was announced. According to him, UC3 expects the partners' shared ambition to be translated into experiences intended for fans around the world. That statement confirms that the cooperation is not conceived solely as a regional European campaign, although the European market is at its core.
The establishment of UC3 gives clubs, through their joint organisation, a more direct role in managing commercial rights together with UEFA. Hyundai therefore joins the Champions League during a period of new multi-year commercial cycles. For fans, the impact of the partnership will be visible through campaigns and activities during matches, while Hyundai gains a presence alongside the competition for five consecutive seasons.
The start of the cooperation coincides with the first matches of the 2026/27 season
The timing of the announcement further increases the visibility of the new agreement. Hyundai officially presented the partnership on September 7, 2026, and the first matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase begins as early as September 8. According to UEFA's schedule, the opening matchday fixtures are spread across three days, from September 8 to 10, followed by matchdays in October, November, December and January. The competition then moves into the play-offs and knockout stage, with the season ending with the final in Madrid on June 5, 2027. From the very beginning of the agreement, Hyundai therefore receives an almost year-round cycle in which sporting events, vehicle launches and technology campaigns can be connected.
For a company that has used football as a global communications channel for decades, the UEFA Champions League represents a logical continuation of its strategy, as well as a shift towards a longer-term presence in European club football. On the other hand, for UEFA's commercial system, Hyundai's arrival means the inclusion of a global automotive manufacturer with extensive European development and manufacturing infrastructure. The partnership will run until the end of the 2030/31 season, long enough to encompass several generations of vehicles and several full cycles of the club competition. The extent to which the cooperation will move beyond the traditional sponsorship model towards concrete mobility, technology and fan-experience projects will become clearer as Hyundai and UC3 announce details of individual activations. For now, it has been confirmed that one of Europe's most visible football stages will have Hyundai as its official automotive category partner for the next five seasons.
