Messi on Argentina's list for the 2026 World Cup: Scaloni kept the backbone of the champions from Qatar
Lionel Messi is on the list of 26 Argentina internationals for the 2026 World Cup, which will be played from June 11 to July 19 in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico. The Argentine Football Association announced that head coach Lionel Scaloni has selected the squad that will try to defend the title won in Qatar in 2022, and it retains a large part of the players who marked the most successful period of the Argentina national team in the last several decades. Messi, if he appears at the tournament, will become the first footballer to play at six different World Cups, after playing in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
For Argentina's 38-year-old captain, this should be his final appearance on the biggest international stage, although such an assessment in his case has already proved premature several times. Scaloni nevertheless included him among eight forwards, together with Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Thiago Almada, Nicolás González, Giuliano Simeone, José Manuel López and Nico Paz. In this way Argentina kept an attacking roster that combines experience, continuity and several younger options, but at the same time left off the list some names that had been mentioned in recent months as possible travelers to the tournament.
The list brings continuity, but also several clear cuts
According to the announcement by the Argentine Football Association, the goalkeepers are Emiliano Martínez, Gerónimo Rulli and Juan Musso. In defense are Gonzalo Montiel, Nahuel Molina, Lisandro Martínez, Nicolás Otamendi, Leonardo Balerdi, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Tagliafico and Facundo Medina. The midfield consists of Giovani Lo Celso, Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Exequiel Palacios, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Valentín Barco. The attack is led by Messi, and alongside him are Nicolás González, Giuliano Simeone, Lautaro Martínez, José Manuel López, Julián Álvarez, Thiago Almada and Nico Paz.
Such a squad shows that Scaloni did not want to radically change the national team that won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, but chose a core that knows his system well. Emiliano Martínez remains the first symbol of stability in goal, Cristian Romero and Nicolás Otamendi bring solidity and experience in defense, while De Paul, Enzo Fernández, Mac Allister and Paredes make up the central part of the team that was crucial in controlling the tempo of play during the previous cycle. In attack, special weight will be carried by the balance between Messi's creativity, Lautaro's efficiency and Julián Álvarez's mobility.
Among the omissions, Franco Mastantuono, Alejandro Garnacho, Gianluca Prestianni, Marcos Acuña and Paulo Dybala stand out in particular. Sporting News states that Acuña's omission is one of the surprises of the list, while Facundo Medina earned a place in defense even though recently he had not regularly been in the narrower circle of call-ups. The same source writes that Valentín Barco secured his place with good performances in Strasbourg, while Mastantuono lost the race after a period with few minutes at Real Madrid. Dybala, although a major name in Argentine football, has again remained outside the main tournament picture at a moment when Scaloni is giving preference to forwards who offer him a different profile and greater tactical mobility.
Messi's sixth World Cup would be a historic precedent
Messi's status is the central story of Argentina's list, not only because of his role in the team but also because of the historical dimension of the appearance. If he plays at the 2026 World Cup, he will become the first footballer to have appeared at six World Cups. Back in Qatar in 2022, he took over a series of records connected with appearances at World Cups, and the title won against France in the final in Lusail rounded off an international career that for years had been burdened by comparisons with previous generations of Argentine football.
In the new cycle, Messi is no longer only the forward around whom every move is built, but also a figure who gives the team emotional and tactical stability. After the triumph in Qatar, Argentina continued winning trophies, including the 2024 Copa América, and Scaloni managed to maintain competitive intensity without major upheavals in the dressing room. In that context, Messi's return to the World Cup does not mean only an attempt at an additional personal record, but also a symbol of the continuation of the generation that, after years of disappointment, won all the most important international titles.
Still, the fact that Messi enters the tournament as a veteran necessarily changes expectations. His role may depend on his physical condition, the rhythm of matches and the way Argentina will distribute its strength through the group. Scaloni will probably have to balance the need for the captain to be on the pitch at key moments with the need for the team not to depend exclusively on one player. That is precisely why Álvarez, Lautaro Martínez and Almada are important, as well as the midfielders who can take over the organization of possession when Messi does not drop the game toward the middle of the pitch.
Argentina in Group J against Algeria, Austria and Jordan
FIFA has confirmed in the 2026 World Cup schedule that Argentina has been placed in Group J with Algeria, Austria and Jordan. According to the official schedule, the reigning world champions play their first match against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City. A duel with Austria follows on June 22 in Dallas, and the final group match against Jordan is scheduled for June 27, also in Dallas. In the new tournament format, the two best national teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage, as will the eight best third-placed teams.
On paper, the group gives Argentina the status of favorite, but the opponents bring different challenges. Algeria returns to the world stage as a national team with experience from African qualifiers and footballers accustomed to playing in strong European leagues. Austria is traditionally a tactically disciplined national team, with physical and organizational solidity that can create problems for teams that want to dominate possession. Jordan will, according to the available data about the group, play its first World Cup, which gives it a different kind of motivation and freedom from pressure.
The new format with 48 national teams and 104 matches will change the dynamics of the tournament. FIFA states that the tournament will be played in 16 host cities, and the final phase will last until the final on July 19. The expansion of the competition means that favorites will have more room to correct a poor start to the tournament, but also a longer path toward the title. For Argentina, this means that the defense of the trophy will not depend only on the quality of the first eleven, but also on squad depth, the ability to rotate and avoiding injuries in a packed schedule.
Scaloni's choice confirms faith in a proven structure
Scaloni took over the national team after the 2018 World Cup at a sensitive moment, and from a temporary solution he grew into a head coach who brought Argentina the most stable and most successful cycle of the modern era. The Sporting News recalls that Argentina is among the few major title contenders that have retained the same head coach from 2022. That fact is not insignificant because continuity of the coaching staff enables clearer roles in the team, faster adaptation of new players and less room for tactical experiments before the tournament.
The 2026 list shows that Scaloni opted for a mixture of proven leaders and new options, but without a complete shift toward a new generation. In defense, Otamendi, Romero, Montiel, Tagliafico and Molina are still important, while Balerdi and Medina provide depth and competition. There are no major surprises in midfield because De Paul, Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández and Paredes have been part of the standard structure for years. Barco stands out in that group as a player who can bring a different dynamic, especially because of his ability to cover several roles.
The attacking part of the list says the most about the change in generational rhythm. Messi and Lautaro Martínez bring continuity, Álvarez has already proved himself on the biggest stage, and Nico Paz and Giuliano Simeone represent the younger layer being gradually introduced into the national team. José Manuel López earned a place as a specific attacking option, while Almada remains a player who can connect the lines and create an overload between midfield and attack. The omission of Garnacho and Prestianni shows that Scaloni did not choose only according to potential, but according to the role a player can immediately have in a tournament context.
Defending the title as a challenge no one has solved since Brazil
In North America, Argentina will try to do what no national team has managed since Brazil, which defended the world champion title in 1962 after its triumph in 1958. Such a fact shows how difficult it is to remain at the top in a four-year cycle in which generations, players' physical condition, tactical trends and public pressure change. Teams that win the World Cup often enter the next tournament with great expectations, but also with a burden that can change their style of play and the internal dynamics of the dressing room.
In that sense, Argentina has several advantages. It has kept the head coach, the backbone of the world champions and a clear hierarchy in the dressing room. In addition, players such as Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, Romero and Álvarez have matured further in European club football in the meantime. On the other hand, time does not favor veterans, and tournament football is often decided by details: cards, injuries, travel schedules and the ability to settle a match even when the team is not playing at the highest level.
For Scaloni, therefore, the most important question will be how to maintain the balance between legacy and necessary adaptation. Too much reliance on the champions from Qatar could slow down natural renewal, but too quick a cut could disrupt what brought Argentina to the top. The list of 26 players suggests that the head coach chose a middle path: he kept the core that knows how to win and added players who can take on larger roles if the tournament requires it.
The list comes before FIFA's final announcement of all squads
The Argentine association announced its list on May 28, while AFA had earlier stated that FIFA would officially announce the lists of all 48 national teams on June 2. According to the rules published by AFA, citing FIFA's procedure, national teams for the 2026 World Cup may have from 23 to 26 players, with at least three of them required to be goalkeepers. The rules also provide for the possibility of replacing a player from the final list in the event of a serious injury or illness, no later than 24 hours before the national team's first match, while a goalkeeper may also be replaced at a later stage if a serious health reason arises.
That procedure means that Argentina's list is politically, sportingly and communicationally concluded, but that it will appear in FIFA's official register together with the other national teams. In practice, changes after such announcements happen rarely and most often only because of injuries, but the period until the first match remains sensitive. Clubs, national-team staffs and medical services will in that period particularly monitor the condition of players who have had a demanding season or are entering the tournament with earlier health problems.
Argentina thus enters the final phase of preparations with a clear list, a clear group and a clear goal. Messi is once again the central name, but not the only reason why the reigning champions are considered one of the main contenders. Scaloni has a team that has already proved it can withstand the pressure of the biggest matches, and the 2026 tournament will show whether this generation can make one last major step forward and confirm itself as one of the most successful in the history of Argentine football.
