Mike Malott and Joaquin Buckley headline the UFC event in Edmonton
The UFC will return to Edmonton on October 17, 2026, where Canadian welterweight Mike Malott and American fighter Joaquin Buckley will compete in the main event at Rogers Place. The organization confirmed the bout on July 28, and it is a meeting between two ranked contenders whose career trajectories currently differ significantly: Malott enters on a four-fight winning streak, while Buckley is attempting to end a two-fight losing streak. In the evening's co-main event, Erin Blanchfield and Jasmine Jasudavicius, two highly ranked contenders in the women's flyweight division, will face each other. According to the information currently available, the remainder of the card has not yet been finalized, so additional fights and changes are possible before the event takes place.
For Malott, the appearance in Edmonton will be his second consecutive UFC main event in Canada. In April 2026, he headlined the card in Winnipeg against former title challenger Gilbert Burns and recorded the biggest victory of his career to date, finishing the Brazilian by technical knockout in the third round. Buckley, on the other hand, arrives in Edmonton following losses to former champion Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady. Because of both fighters' positions in the welterweight rankings, the outcome of the main event could directly affect the balance of power within the top fifteen, although the UFC has not announced it as an official title eliminator.
Malott gets an opportunity to enter the top ten
According to the current UFC rankings cited by MMA Fighting, Buckley is ranked tenth and Malott twelfth in the welterweight division. That gives Malott an opportunity to take another important step toward fights with the division's leading names by defeating a top-ten opponent. The Canadian fighter has a professional record of 14 wins, two losses and one draw, while according to Sportsnet, he has recorded seven wins in eight UFC appearances. His rise gained further significance after May 2025, when he knocked out Charles Radtke in Montreal, and October of the same year, when he defeated the experienced Kevin Holland by unanimous decision.
The streak began in Edmonton in November 2024. Malott defeated Trevin Giles by unanimous decision after three rounds and returned to winning ways following a painful loss to Neil Magny at UFC 297 in January 2024. In that fight against Magny, he came close to success, but the veteran turned the contest around and finished him with strikes late in the third round. Malott subsequently changed his approach to longer fights: against Giles and Holland, he displayed greater patience, better energy management and a willingness to pursue victory through tactically controlled rounds rather than relying exclusively on an early finish.
The victory over Burns in Winnipeg confirmed that this more cautious approach had not reduced his finishing threat. According to the UFC's official results, Malott stopped Burns with strikes after two largely controlled rounds and received a Performance of the Night bonus for his appearance. It was his fourth consecutive victory and his first in the main event of a UFC card. Sportsnet states that this made him the first Canadian fighter since Rory MacDonald in 2016 to headline a UFC event held in Canada, joining MacDonald and Georges St-Pierre among the few Canadian names to have been given such a role.
Malott's profile differs from that of many striking-oriented welterweights because he also represents a serious threat on the ground. His official UFC profile lists six wins by knockout or technical knockout and six wins by submission, while only two of his professional victories have come by judges' decision. That distribution of results demonstrates why opponents must simultaneously be wary of his strikes, takedowns and transitions toward finishes. A five-round fight against Buckley will nevertheless once again require discipline from him, particularly because the American fighter can maintain a high level of intensity even in the later stages of a contest.
Buckley attempts to halt his decline after approaching a title fight
Joaquin Buckley built strong momentum after returning to the welterweight division in 2023. In its earlier analyses, the UFC highlighted that he had put together six victories in the division, with the streak including significant successes against Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington. The explosive American striker consequently moved close to the very top of the rankings and earned a main event against former champion Kamaru Usman in Atlanta in June 2025. Usman, however, won by unanimous decision after five rounds and ended Buckley's streak.
His return against Sean Brady at UFC 328 in May 2026 did not produce a turnaround. According to the UFC's official judges' scorecards, Brady won unanimously by scores of 30-25, 30-25 and 30-27, using wrestling, control and ground work to limit Buckley's explosiveness. It was Buckley's second consecutive loss, and he now enters the fight with Malott under greater pressure to produce a result. A new victory over a ranked opponent would keep him among the relevant welterweight contenders, while a third consecutive loss could significantly distance him from fights against the division's leading names.
Buckley's most recognizable asset remains his punching power and his ability to produce a sudden finish from a relatively short distance. During his UFC career, he has built a reputation as an entertaining knockout artist, but his success in the welterweight division has not been based solely on individual spectacular moves. During his winning streak, he showed improved control of space, physical strength in the clinch and increasingly reliable defensive wrestling. The losses to Usman and Brady have nevertheless reopened the question of how he will respond against an opponent who can change levels of attack and connect strikes with takedowns.
In Edmonton, the key issue will therefore be who imposes the distance and pace. Buckley will likely attempt to close the distance, force Malott into exchanges and prevent him from calmly setting up takedowns or kicks. Malott will have an interest in keeping the fight technically varied, changing the tempo and using the threat of ground fighting to slow Buckley's attacks. Because both men possess finishing power, the opening moments may be highly dangerous, but the experience of their most recent appearances indicates that conditioning and decision-making in the fourth and fifth rounds could be equally important.
Blanchfield and Jasudavicius in a fight with major consequences for the flyweight division
The co-main event between Erin Blanchfield and Jasmine Jasudavicius was originally scheduled for UFC 330 in Philadelphia on August 15, 2026. The UFC had previously announced a meeting between fourth-ranked Blanchfield and seventh-ranked Jasudavicius, but the American withdrew because of a minor injury. According to MMA Fighting and Sportsnet, the organization subsequently moved the bout to the event in Edmonton. The new date gives both fighters additional preparation time, but it also increases the importance of the appearance because the winner will remain within immediate reach of the top of one of the most competitive women's divisions.
Blanchfield enters the fight with a professional record of 14-2. Following her loss to Manon Fiorot in March 2024, she returned with a victory over former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas at Rogers Place. The official judges' scorecards show that she won unanimously in November 2024, with all three judges scoring the fight 48-47, after five tactically demanding rounds. In November 2025, she further strengthened her status as a contender when she finished Tracy Cortez by submission with a choke in the second round at UFC 322. In terms of results, she has therefore rebuilt her path toward the top, but against Jasudavicius she must prove that she can control a physically strong opponent who is highly effective against the fence and from the top position.
Jasudavicius, whose current professional record is 15-4, has progressed in recent years from a promising fighter to a member of the top ten. In Montreal in May 2025, she forced former title challenger Jessica Andrade to submit to a first-round choke. After losing to Manon Fiorot in October 2025, she returned in Winnipeg in April 2026, where she defeated Karine Silva by unanimous decision. Sportsnet states that she has won six of her past seven fights, confirming the consistency of her rise despite the loss to Fiorot.
The UFC's statistical database further emphasizes how demanding the co-main event could be in terms of wrestling and ground fighting. In the category measuring the percentage of total control time, subject to a minimum of five UFC appearances, Jasudavicius is listed in first place and Blanchfield in fourth. Both are comfortable during long sequences against the fence, with clinch takedowns and while maintaining the top position. The difference could emerge during transitions: Blanchfield is known for quickly pursuing submissions, while Jasudavicius often builds an advantage through pressure, control and the gradual exhaustion of her opponent.
A victory for Blanchfield would mean defending her high ranking and adding another argument for a future fight against the division's best names. For Jasudavicius, success against the fourth-ranked contender would be the biggest result of her career and could bring her within immediate reach of a title fight. However, the order at the top of the division will also depend on other results and UFC decisions, so neither fighter is guaranteed the position of next challenger in advance.
Edmonton hosts the UFC for the fourth time
The event on October 17 will mark the UFC's fourth visit to Edmonton. Sportsnet states that all three previous events were also held at Rogers Place: UFC 215 in September 2017, UFC 240 in July 2019 and the Fight Night headlined by Brandon Moreno and Amir Albazi in November 2024. The city first hosted the organization in 2017, when Amanda Nunes defended her title against Valentina Shevchenko in the main event, while UFC 240 two years later was headlined by the bout between Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar.
The most recent event in Edmonton is particularly connected to three participants on the announced 2026 card. Malott defeated Giles there, Jasudavicius finished Ariane da Silva D’Arce with a third-round choke, and Blanchfield defeated Namajunas after five rounds. Their return to the same arena is therefore not merely another appearance in front of a Canadian crowd, but also a return to the location of important victories that influenced their current positions.
Rogers Place is located in downtown Edmonton and opened in 2016. According to information from the City of Edmonton, it is a municipally owned multipurpose arena, best known as the home of the Edmonton Oilers hockey club, but it also regularly hosts concerts and other major sporting events. The UFC's return less than two years after the November 2024 event demonstrates that Edmonton has once again become an important stop for the organization in the Canadian market. The event will also be the UFC's second event in Canada during 2026, following the April card in Winnipeg.
The main event combines momentum and pressure
At the center of the entire card will be a simple but compelling sporting story: Malott is attempting to turn the best streak of his career into a place among the ten leading welterweights, while Buckley is trying to prove that two consecutive losses have not marked the end of his rise. Malott has the advantage of continuity, confidence and experience from a winning five-round fight against Burns. Buckley has more experience against opponents from the very top and a reason to impose an aggressive pace from the opening bell.
For both men, this is a fight that carries greater significance than their position in the rankings alone. Malott can confirm his status as one of the most important Canadian UFC fighters of the current generation, while Buckley can reopen a path toward contests that lead to the title. Their meeting, alongside the ranked clash between Blanchfield and Jasudavicius, gives the Edmonton event two fights with clear consequences for the top of the UFC's divisions. The remainder of the card has yet to be announced, and the UFC traditionally warns that all announced bouts are subject to change until the event takes place.
