Yesterday, on the naval military training ground Žirje, located in the picturesque central Adriatic, a military exercise named "HARPUN 24" was held. This significant activity, which began on October 1 and lasted three days, attracted the attention of the highest state officials, including the President of the Republic of Croatia and the Commander of the Armed Forces, Zoran Milanović. During the exercise, the President was present on the coastal patrol vessel "Omiš," where he had the opportunity to observe various military operations firsthand. He was accompanied by key military leaders, including the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Colonel Tihomir Kundid, and the Commander of the Croatian Navy, Commodore Damir Dojkić.

The goal of this military exercise was to improve the capabilities and operational coherence of all participants within the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia. During the exercise, complex tactical operations were carried out, including artillery target practice at sea and in the air, as well as naval interception, search, and rescue operations. Special attention was given to electronic warfare exercises, which are of essential importance for Croatia's modern defense strategy. All branches of the Armed Forces participated in the exercise, including the Croatian Navy, the Croatian Air Force, the Croatian Army, and the Special Forces Command, ensuring full coordination and cooperation.

Main activities and tactical operations

"HARPUN 24" encompasses numerous tactical activities designed to test and enhance the capabilities of military forces. During the exercise, special attention was devoted to simulation operations, electronic warfare, and operations in coastal waters. The forces were tasked with conducting various simulations, including targeting from naval guns and simulating landing operations. Additionally, units for search and rescue as well as protection and securing territorial waters were trained. These exercises not only strengthen defensive capabilities but also enable soldiers to face the challenges of modern warfare and ensure a high level of readiness under all circumstances.

Commendations and importance of the military exercise

President Milanović, after the completion of the exercise, praised the soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and officers of the Armed Forces for their successful execution of tasks, emphasizing the importance of their work in preserving the Croatian sea. "Croatian sailors and commanders of ships, I congratulate you on the successful completion of your mission, which was carried out under challenging conditions. I wish you much luck and success in your work, as well as health to you and your families. Protect the Croatian sea!" said the President, thus highlighting the significance of cooperation and coordination among all military units.

In addition to the soldiers, other high officials followed the exercise, including the Chief Defense Advisor, Ivica Olujić, and the Special Advisor for Veterans of the Homeland War, Marijan Mareković. Their presence further emphasized the importance of these military activities, which not only increase the readiness of the Armed Forces but also strengthen citizens' trust in their military's ability to protect national interests.

International cooperation and interoperability

The exercise "HARPUN 24" also has an international dimension, aimed at strengthening cooperation between Croatia and its NATO partners. This segment allows Croatian forces to successfully participate in international military operations, whether it involves rescue operations, mine countermeasure operations, or joint maritime operations. In collaboration with other NATO member states, exercises like this help increase military readiness and contribute to collective security in the region, especially in light of recent geopolitical tensions.

One of the main goals of this exercise was to integrate different branches of the Armed Forces, achieving a high level of coordination and efficiency in joint operations. This activity is not only a significant military training but also an opportunity to test new operational procedures and improve cooperation within and outside national frameworks. Moreover, this type of collaboration contributes to the development of new tactical solutions that may be crucial in future operations.

Perspective

In conclusion, military exercises like "HARPUN 24" are vital for maintaining security and stability in the region, ensuring that the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia are ready to respond to any challenges that may arise. These exercises demonstrate how important it is to maintain a high level of preparedness and efficiency to face challenges that may arise, not only within Croatia but also on an international scale. Additionally, exercises like "HARPUN 24" strengthen awareness of the importance of military training among citizens, fostering trust in the capabilities of the Armed Forces and their role in preserving national security.

Editorial Desk for Military and Security Affairs

The Defence and Geostrategic Affairs Editorial Board brings together authors who have spent many years analysing security trends, military doctrines and power relations on the international stage. Our texts are created from the experience of people who have followed the development of modern weapon systems, the evolution of military technologies and the broader geopolitical processes that shape the world for decades. The editorial approach is based on a clear understanding of military strategies, historical precedents and the ways in which the decisions of major powers reflect on global security.

In our work, we rely on professional expertise, personal experience and long-term monitoring of the defence sector. Our authors have studied military operations, modernisation programmes, international conflicts and security studies for years, enabling them to answer complex questions calmly, precisely and with well-founded arguments. We do not deal with superficial interpretations nor transmit sensationalism; our goal is to explain context as seen by people who have researched security challenges throughout their careers.

We pay particular attention to changes that shift the global balance — the strengthening of military alliances, the development of new technologies, doctrinal adjustments and the transformation of international relations. Our focus is not solely on numbers and technical data, but also on the motives, intentions and consequences behind political and military moves. We believe that defence cannot be understood without a broader geostrategic perspective, and geopolitics without a military dimension remains incomplete.

Each member of our editorial team approaches topics with a deep sense of responsibility towards the reader. We strive for clear and comprehensible writing, whether dealing with analyses of weapon systems, regional tensions or security threats that shape the future. Our work stems from the conviction that information is the foundation of security, and that quality journalism is recognised by its ability to turn complex processes into content that helps navigate a rapidly changing world.

The Defence and Geostrategic Affairs Editorial Board continues to build a recognisable style — serious, well-grounded and analytical — and remains committed to seeking answers that are not always simple, but always important. Our mission is to provide content based on experience, fact-checking and an understanding of the security reality, without shortcuts or clichés. In a time when security decisions have far-reaching consequences, we believe that truthful and expertly prepared information is the most valuable resource we can offer our readers.
