The national award ceremony "Sunflower of Rural Tourism – The Sunflower Award" for the year 2024, held on January 17, 2025, in the Croatian House in Vukovar, once again confirmed the growing significance and potential of rural tourism in Croatia. This prestigious event, which has been gathering the best projects in rural tourism for twelve years, attracted attention from across the country, and the Zadar County once again proved its strength, winning as many as six awards among the 12 registered projects from the county.

"Sunflower of Rural Tourism" – More than an award

The "Sunflower of Rural Tourism" award is a project of the Croatian Association for Tourism and Rural Development "Club Members Village" that promotes excellence in rural tourism. The project encompasses ten categories that recognize different aspects of sustainability, innovation, preservation of tradition, and promotion of local communities. This initiative not only celebrates best practices but also encourages further development of rural areas by promoting the values of preserving cultural and natural heritage.

Achievements of Zadar County

Zadar County proudly found itself among the most successful. Dr. sc. Radoslav Bobanović from Polača received a charter for his special contribution to the development and promotion of rural tourism, recognizing his long-standing work and dedication to promoting local values. Gold charters were awarded in four categories, confirming the diversity and quality of Zadar County’s offer.

Gold Charters

  • Tourist Farmhouse Enterprises: OPG Didini vrtovi – Agrotourism Plavica won the gold charter for its innovative combination of tradition and modern tourist offerings.

  • Traditional Rural Gastronomy: Benediktinke from Zadar were awarded for their products that combine authenticity and top quality.

  • Active Tourist Content in Rural Areas: The Škraping event, held in Tkon, stood out as an example of successful synergy between sports and tourism.

  • Smart Rural Communities: The Visitor Center "Underground City of Paklenica" received recognition for its innovative approach to the tourist experience.

Bronze Charter

Keks Maslinko, a product of OPG Zalović from Tkon, won the bronze charter in the category "Projects/holders of protected marketing labels". This unique product made from local ingredients stood out for its innovative concept and quality.

The Bigger Picture of Rural Tourism

Rural tourism in Croatia is increasingly gaining importance, especially in the context of sustainable development and the preservation of natural resources. Projects such as the "Sunflower of Rural Tourism" help raise public awareness of the value of rural destinations but also motivate local communities to invest in sustainability and innovation. With its rich cultural heritage, authentic gastronomic experiences, and pristine nature, rural tourism represents a key segment of Croatia’s tourism offering.

Future and Challenges

Although successes like those from Zadar County demonstrate the strength of Croatian rural tourism, challenges such as the lack of infrastructural investment and insufficient promotion still exist. Strategic planning and cooperation across all levels of management are crucial for the further development of this sector.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
