Advent in Marija Bistrica 2025: a month of spiritual music, family content, and holiday atmosphere

Advent in Marija Bistrica 2025 brings more than a month of rich programming: four thematic weekends, concerts of spiritual, classical, and pop music, workshops and plays for children, a spiritual program in the basilica, a Christmas fair, local products, gastronomic offer, light attractions, and a special New Year's Eve celebration at noon.

Advent in Marija Bistrica 2025: a month of spiritual music, family content, and holiday atmosphere

This winter, Advent in Marija Bistrica opens its doors again – in its full glory. From November 27 to December 31, 2025, the small town of Marija Bistrica will be illuminated by festive lights, filled with music, tradition, and the warmth of community. The program, jointly prepared by the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Marija Bistrica and the Municipality of Marija Bistrica, brings a rich offer for all generations – from children to retirees, from believers to lovers of good entertainment.

Four thematic weekends and a rich program

The basic structure of Advent continues to rest on four thematic weekends, which aim to provide a special atmosphere and content each year: Spiritual Music Weekend, Children's Weekend, Light Weekend, and Weekend of Bistrica Customs.

Thus, immediately in the first days of the event, from November 27 to 30, the Spiritual Music Weekend is expected. It will be followed by the Children's Weekend (December 05–07), intended for the youngest, and then the Light Weekend and the Weekend of Customs. The culmination – the traditional New Year's Eve celebration at noon on the last day, December 31.

Novelties attracting attention

This year's Advent comes with a series of novelties — an attempt to further expand, refine, and make the program interesting both to regular visitors and to everyone coming to Marija Bistrica for the first time. Among the most notable novelties are:

  • »Bistrica Honey Village« – an installation and photo-point about 2.5 meters high, dedicated to the tradition of gingerbread makers (licitari) and the production of wooden toys. Also on offer is a new souvenir: a gingerbread cookie shaped to be an ornament for the Christmas tree.

  • Laser show during the Light Weekend – the return of the spectacle after some ten years, with light effects and music. It is planned as part of lighting and musical performances that create a unique experience.

  • Combination of spiritual and secular – unlike numerous commercial Advent events, in Marija Bistrica the emphasis remains on spirituality, tradition, and community. Thus, the program seeks to unite church rites and masses with musical, artistic, and social events.

For children, families, and those seeking change

The youngest visitors will have their space in this Advent too – through workshops, animations, plays, meetings with St. Nicholas, children's cinemas, and games. The Children's Weekend is specially designed to bring joy, holiday warmth, and children's excitement into this festive mosaic.

Families, as well as those looking for relaxation and socializing, will be able to enjoy the warm atmosphere, mulled wine, Zagorje sweets, licitar hearts, wooden toys, and domestic handicrafts – all as part of the Christmas fair located in the center of the town.

Spiritual framework and music in the spotlight

Throughout the entire Advent, liturgies, masses, and concerts by choirs and soloists will be held in the Basilica of the Mother of God of Bistrica. The holy place of pilgrimage becomes a stage for spiritual encounters, prayer, and music – in the spirit of preparation for Christmas.

Besides that, the program also offers numerous musical, theatrical, and artistic events: concerts, plays, evening performances, exhibitions, ice skating, a retro-party, dance, and light effects. All this makes Advent in Marija Bistrica attractive even for those who do not necessarily seek gatherings for religious motives.

Why visit Marija Bistrica specifically?

Marija Bistrica, located in the heart of Zagorje, is known as the Croatian national shrine dedicated to the Mother of God. At this time of year, it turns into a true festive center – charming, homely, and rich in content. The Advent event offers an authentic combination of tradition, spirituality, culture, and entertainment. Those looking for a winter experience with a soul will certainly find it here.

The organizers emphasize that the goal is for Advent not to be just another commercial event, but to retain its source: tradition, community, spiritual preparation, and a good atmosphere that connects generations. Every year they work to expand and refresh the program with new contents, but also to preserve the core of what makes Advent in Marija Bistrica special.

If you are planning a pre-holiday trip, a family visit, or simply want to feel the warmth of community and holiday spirit — Marija Bistrica offers an opportunity for all that this winter.

The detailed program of the event is available on the official Advent website and on the event's Facebook page. Due to possible changes in the schedule, it is recommended to follow the organizers' official announcements.
