Opatija, the pearl of Kvarner and a favorite destination for history, culture, and good entertainment enthusiasts, transforms into a true stage of color, laughter, and creativity during the winter months. The Opatija Carnival, also known as the "fifth season," has become synonymous with unforgettable moments shared by everyone—from the youngest to the oldest. This year, the Carnival lasts nearly seven weeks, offering a diverse and rich program that combines tradition, innovation, and unlimited fun.

The Beginning of Masquerade Madness

On the very day of St. Anthony, January 17th, the Carnival begins with the ceremonial raising of the carnival flag in front of the Opatija marketplace. The traditional Pust, a doll that symbolizes all the hardships of the past year, will be hung as a sign of the masqueraders taking over power. The city will, at least symbolically, be handed over to the hands of cheerful masks, and this period will become a time of carefree, laughter, and creative expression.

Cars Under Masks

As early as the next day, octane enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy the Rally of Masquerade Octanaci Halubje – Liburnia, which has experienced its 14th edition this year. This unique parade brings together masked cars and their drivers, who not only demonstrate their skills but also unlimited creativity in the design of their vehicles. The rally is scheduled to take place in Slatina, where visitors can enjoy a real showcase of unusual vehicles.

Klapa Music in a New Dress

A special event within the Carnival is certainly the Masquerade Klapa Marathon, which will be held on February 7th. This musical competition delights the audience with humorous lyrics, original costumes, and klapa performances of popular songs. This is not an ordinary concert, but a blend of music, satire, and carnival spirit, attracting an ever-growing audience each year.

Children's Creativity in the Spotlight

One of the most anticipated events is the Children's Carnival Procession, scheduled for February 16th. More than three thousand children from all over Croatia will showcase their colorful masks along the route from the city marketplace to Slatina. In addition to the parade, children and their parents will be able to enjoy a rich accompanying program with animators, music, and fun workshops.

Balinjerada – Symbol of Opatija's Tradition

The climax of the Opatija Carnival is certainly the Balinjerada, a unique race of carriages on ball bearings, which will be held this year on February 23rd. This event, which combines tradition and adrenaline, gathers thousands of spectators each year. Participants compete in various categories, and guests have the opportunity to experience the ride thanks to the "Taxi Balinjere" program. After the race, a carnival parade follows, featuring magnificent costumes and traditional groups.

Carnival Offer for Everyone

In addition to the mentioned events, the Carnival offers numerous accompanying activities, such as themed dances, exhibitions, and gastro festivals. Particularly interesting are the Masquerade dances of pul Barića and Kukalka, events that combine music, dance, and traditional elements. During this time, Opatija transforms into a city that lives the carnival spirit, and visitors of all ages can find something for themselves.

Broader Context and Tradition

Carnivals in Kvarner have a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. These events are not only an opportunity for entertainment but also a way to preserve cultural heritage. Many families participate in the organization and preparations from generation to generation, preserving traditional customs and passing them on to younger generations. In addition to the local population, the Carnival attracts tourists from all over the world, making it an important segment of Opatija's tourist offer.

Plan Your Visit

For those planning to visit Opatija during the Carnival, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance, as the city often becomes crowded with visitors during this time of year. The organizers promise a rich program for all ages and invite everyone to become part of this unique event.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
