Opatija shone once again on February 16, 2025, in a burst of colors and joy on the occasion of the 27th Children's Carnival Parade. More than 3,200 children from 35 carnival groups flooded the city streets, bringing joy and creativity and confirming Opatija's status as a center for carnival events.

At exactly noon, the event was ceremoniously opened by the Children's City Council, led by child mayor Lana Golubović. The parade started from the city market, proceeding along the main street to the Slatina swimming pool. Along the route, participants stopped in front of five stages where hosts and animators greeted them, providing additional fun and interaction with the audience.

Among the imaginative masks, groups such as "Modna revija dječjih prava", "Rođendanski muffini", "Snježno kraljevstvo", "Kastafska šuma", "Vlak u snijegu" and "Willy Wonka i tvornica čokolade" stood out. Each group presented unique costumes and choreographies, showcasing exceptional creativity and the effort put into the preparation.

At the first stage by the market, the participants were greeted by Mayor Fernando Kirigin, corpulent mayor Duško Jeličić – Dule, and Joso Krmpotić. The next stages were set up in front of the Paris hotel, opposite the Tiska kiosk, and in front of the Milenij hotel, where hosts Lena Stojiljković, Neno Pavinčić, and Borna Šmer further animated the audience and participants.

The event concluded at Slatina, with hosting support from Dražen Turina Šajeta. Children were able to enjoy doughnuts provided by local bakeries and fresh fruit from Opatija’s confectioneries. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, music, and dance, creating unforgettable memories for all attendees.

This event not only celebrates children's creativity and imagination, but also reinforces Opatija as an important center for carnival events in the region. The Children's Carnival Parade has become a traditional event that attracts an increasing number of participants and visitors each year, contributing to the richness of the city's cultural offerings.

In addition to the main parade, the organizers prepared additional activities for visitors of all ages. At various locations along the route, workshops for children were held, where the little ones could make their own masks and souvenirs. Additionally, stands with traditional carnival treats and souvenirs were set up, allowing visitors to take a piece of Opatija's carnival magic home.

During the event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Marshal Tito Street was closed to traffic on the section from the intersection with Dr. M. Laginje Street to Slatina. City bus traffic was rerouted to Nova cesta, and special traffic regulation ensured the smooth running of the parade and the safety of all participants and visitors.

The Children's Carnival Parade in Opatija is not just a local event; it attracts visitors from all over Croatia and abroad. Many tourists plan their visits to Opatija precisely during the carnival in order to experience the unique atmosphere and participate in a celebration that combines tradition, culture, and children's joy.

Such events have a significant impact on the local community and economy. The increased number of visitors during the carnival period brings benefits to local restaurateurs, merchants, and accommodation providers. In addition to the economic aspect, the event fosters a sense of community and pride among residents, who actively participate in the organization and celebration.

Plans for the future of the Children's Carnival Parade include expanding the program and additional activities in order to attract an even greater number of participants and visitors. The organizers are considering the possibility of introducing international collaborations with other carnival cities, which would enrich the offerings and promote cultural exchange.

Opatija, with its rich history and tradition, continues to nurture carnival customs, providing a platform for the youngest to express their creativity and imagination. The Children's Carnival Parade remains one of the most important events on the city's calendar, symbolizing joy, togetherness, and a cultural heritage that is passed down from generation to generation.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
