The Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle and the Municipality of Čavle itself proudly announce the start of the traditional competition "The Most Beautiful Front Yard of the Municipality of Čavle in 2025.". This commendable project, which celebrates beauty, effort, and dedication to landscaping living spaces, invites all owners of beautifully landscaped front yards, homesteads, and gardens in the area of the Municipality of Čavle to apply and showcase their green oases.

How to apply for the competition?

Applications for participation in this prestigious selection began yesterday, May 28, 2025, and will last until June 11, 2025. All interested residents can submit their applications in two ways: by personal delivery to the office of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle or by sending an email to info@tz-cavle.hr. It is important to note that the application must contain basic information: the name and surname of the front yard owner, the exact address where the landscaped area is located, and a contact phone number. In addition to this information, a key part of the application are three photographs that faithfully depict the beauty and tidiness of the registered front yard, homestead, or garden. These photographs will be the first impression for the judging committee.

This competition is not only an opportunity to win valuable prizes but also to promote the culture of environmental landscaping and the preservation of the indigenous appearance of Grobnišćina. Over the years, it has been shown that residents approach the landscaping of their spaces with great enthusiasm, thereby directly contributing to the more beautiful appearance of the entire municipality.

Prize fund for the most beautifully landscaped spaces

This year, the organizers have once again secured attractive prizes for those whose front yards are judged as the most beautiful. The competition takes place in one main category – the most beautifully landscaped front yard – and the prizes are distributed as follows:

  • First place will be awarded a valuable prize equivalent to 300.00 euros.

  • Second place brings a prize worth 200.00 euros.

  • Third place wins a prize worth 100.00 euros.

These awards represent recognition for the effort, creativity, and love for detail that owners invest in their homesteads, making Čavle an even more beautiful place to live.

Transparency and publication of results

All information about the course of the competition, as well as the final decision on the winners, will be publicly announced. The interested public will be able to follow the news on the official websites of the Municipality of Čavle, at www.cavle.hr, and on the websites of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, available at www.tz-cavle.hr. In addition, the results will be shared via the official Facebook pages of both organizers, ensuring wide availability of information to all residents and followers.

Expert committee and judging criteria

The decision on the most beautiful front yards will be made by an expert judging committee. The composition of the committee guarantees objectivity and expertise, and it consists of one representative from the Municipality of Čavle, one representative from the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Čavle, and, as a special feature of this competition, last year's winner. The experience of a person who has already gone through the judging process and won brings additional value to the committee's work.

A field visit and evaluation of all registered front yards is planned for the period up to June 30, 2025. During the visit, committee members will have the opportunity to see and evaluate the registered spaces in person. An interesting addition to the rules allows the committee, with the prior permission of the owner, to also consider other homesteads and balconies that were not formally registered, but which committee members notice during their fieldwork as exceptionally beautiful and landscaped. This opens up the possibility for even those modest but hardworking gardeners to be recognized.

It is important to note that persons who have won an award in the past three years are not eligible to participate in this year's competition, which encourages greater diversity and gives new candidates the opportunity to win awards.

The basic criteria according to which the selection of the most beautiful homestead will be made are comprehensive and focused on the overall impression and sustainability. This includes:

  • Overall aesthetic impression: Harmony of colors, shapes, and arrangement of elements.

  • Invested long-term effort: Recognition of continuous work and dedication to landscaping.

  • Choice and care of plants: Variety of plant species, their health, and adaptation to local climatic conditions. The use of native plants from the Grobnik region such as sage, immortelle, heather, rosemary, and laurel is particularly valued, as they not only beautify the space but also preserve biodiversity and tradition.

  • Respect for tradition and elements of our climate: Use of traditional materials (stone, wood), preservation of native varieties of flowers and fruit trees, and integration of landscaping into the characteristic Grobnik landscape. Elements such as stone details, old tools repurposed as decorations, or the preservation of old fruit tree varieties can bring additional points.

The area of the Municipality of Čavle, located at the junction of mountain and sea climates, abounds in natural beauty and specific flora. Forests of pubescent oak, hop-hornbeam, and oriental hornbeam, as well as diverse Mediterranean plants, serve as inspiration for landscaping homesteads. The preservation of these elements in private gardens contributes to the overall image and identity of the region.

Award ceremony at Bartoja

The culmination of the "The Most Beautiful Front Yard of the Municipality of Čavle in 2025." competition will be the award ceremony. It will be held as part of the traditional and beloved folk festival "Bartoja 2025.". Bartoja, which takes place at the end of August on the occasion of the feast of St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of the Municipality of Čavle, is the central social event in the municipality, filled with cultural, entertainment, sports, and gastronomic content. It is at this grand celebration, in front of numerous residents and guests, that the winners will be announced and presented with their well-deserved awards. This is an opportunity for their efforts to be publicly highlighted and celebrated, and to serve as an inspiration to others.

We invite all residents of the Municipality of Čavle who lovingly landscape their front yards, homesteads, and gardens to respond to this call, share the beauty of their green corners with others, and perhaps they will be the ones declared owners of the most beautiful front yard in 2025. Let flowers, greenery, and creativity beautify our municipality and this beautiful tradition!

The tradition of selecting the most beautiful homesteads is deeply rooted in many parts of Croatia, including Grobnišćina. It fosters community, care for the environment, and aesthetic landscaping of places, which directly affects the quality of life of all inhabitants. Through such initiatives, the Municipality of Čavle and its Tourist Board show how much they value the efforts of their residents and the importance of preserving the beauty and tradition of their region. Landscaped front yards are not just decorations; they are a reflection of their owners' souls and a contribution to the common good of the community.

Let us recall, the Municipality of Čavle offers numerous natural and cultural sights, from the Grobnik Field and the Rječina River, through the Grobnik Castle Town, to the Grobnik Automotodrom and the Platak resort. Beautifully landscaped homesteads further enrich the tourist offer and make a stay in Čavle even more pleasant. Therefore, let this competition be an incentive for everyone to make a big difference with their small contribution.
