Eighteenth Sarmijada in Laktec: Cultural and Culinary Spectacle

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, the Fire Department in Laktec will host one of the most important events dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Zagreb County – Sarmijada. This is already the eighteenth time this unique festival is being held, bringing together enthusiasts of sauerkraut and culinary skills. The event begins at 6:00 PM, and the organizer is the Laktec Sauerkraut Producers Association, which actively promotes this indigenous product.

Competition in the Preparation of Traditional Dishes

This unique event attracts three-member teams from across Zagreb County, competing in the preparation of two dishes – sarma, which is mandatory, and a second dish of their choice, emphasizing Laktec sauerkraut as a key ingredient. Sauerkraut, recognized as a trademark of the Zelina region, reflects the rich cultural heritage and gastronomic identity of the area.

A professional jury, composed of renowned chefs and experts in traditional cuisine, evaluates the dishes based on various criteria, including taste, presentation, and creativity. Competitors vie not only for the prestigious title of winner but also for the preservation and promotion of local culinary traditions.

Sauerkraut as a Gastronomic Gem

Laktec sauerkraut has occupied a special place in the culinary heritage of Sveti Ivan Zelina and surrounding areas for decades. Its production is based on traditional methods passed down through generations, and the quality of this product is recognized beyond the region's borders. Precisely because of this, Sarmijada plays an important role in promoting this unique product and encouraging local agricultural production.

Besides being a key ingredient in sarma, sauerkraut is used in a range of other traditional dishes, allowing competition participants to showcase creativity and innovation in preparing their specialties.

The Broader Significance of Sarmijada

Sarmijada is not only a competition but also an opportunity for gathering the local community and visitors from other parts of Croatia. This event has cultural, educational, and entertainment dimensions. Visitors can enjoy a variety of sauerkraut-based dishes, participate in workshops, and learn more about traditional methods of preparing and preserving sauerkraut.

In addition to gastronomic experiences, the Sarmijada program includes a rich cultural and entertainment content, such as performances by folk groups, exhibitions of local products, and various interactive activities that promote community and the spirit of tradition.

Preparations for an Unforgettable Event

Sarmijada organizers emphasize that special attention is given to every detail to ensure the event runs smoothly. Preparations include securing adequate space, logistics, and promotion, as well as ensuring the safety of participants and visitors. This year, a record number of participants is expected, further confirming the significance of this event for the entire region.

Ultimately, Sarmijada in Laktec has become much more than a culinary competition – it is a symbol of preserving cultural heritage and promoting local identity. Through this event, Sveti Ivan Zelina and its surroundings continue to build their reputation as guardians of tradition and promoters of gastronomic values.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
