The summer season in the picturesque town of Bakar traditionally brings refreshment in the form of an event that has become synonymous with top cultural, entertainment, and sports events. This is, of course, Margaretino leto, a multi-hour festival that each year reaffirms its status as one of the most important summer events in Kvarner. While the entire program is rich with diverse content for all ages and tastes, a special jewel in the crown of this event is its refined cultural segment. It is precisely this, often modest but extremely valuable, that gives the entire experience a note of exclusivity and artistic depth. Lovers of classical music and theatre arts will truly get their fill this summer, as the organizers have prepared a program that promises unforgettable evenings filled with emotions and top-notch performances.
Musical magic in the historic buildings of Bakar and Hreljin
The backbone of the musical part of Margaretino leto has for years been the concert series "Klasični Bakar", a project that came to life thanks to the enthusiasm and clear programmatic vision of the members of the Bakar cultural and artistic association "Sklad". Their dedication has resulted in the magical ambiances of the ancient churches of Bakar and historic exteriors being transformed each year into unique stages that host renowned classical music artists. This tradition continues this summer with three carefully selected concert treats that will satisfy even the most demanding ear. Visitors coming to Bakar have the opportunity to find perfect accommodation to fully experience the charms of this historic town.
The series begins on Sunday, July 6, at 9 p.m., in the beautiful setting of the Church of the Mother of God of the Gate. This votive sanctuary of seafarers, first mentioned in a Glagolitic document from 1445, will with its acoustics and spirituality host the Ćiković harp duo. This unique musical ensemble, founded in 2021, consists of mother and daughter, Diana Grubišić Ćiković and Veronika Ćiković. Their synergy and virtuosity on the harps create a rich and unusual sound, and their repertoire covers a wide range of compositions, from classical transcriptions to contemporary works. Their previous performances throughout Croatia and Europe have regularly been met with delight from audiences and critics, so the great interest in this concert is not surprising.
Less than two weeks later, on Saturday, July 19, also at 9 p.m., the musical caravan moves to Hreljin. In the Church of St. George, which dominates the skyline of this medieval town, the Zagrebački komorni orkestar will perform. This is an ensemble with a long and rich history, specializing in the popularization of baroque, classical, and contemporary music. Known for their energetic performances, often without a conductor, these excellent musicians show exceptional coordination and passion, turning every concert into a first-class musical experience. While exploring the rich offerings of events in Hreljin, it is worth considering the accommodation options offered by this picturesque region.
The grand finale of the "Klasični Bakar" series is scheduled for Friday, August 1, at 9 p.m., at one of the most spectacular locations – the Hreljin hillfort. The remains of this Frankopan castle, which bear witness to a turbulent history, will become the stage for the Papandopulo Quartet. Described as "the most significant and rightfully the most exposed domestic chamber ensemble," this saxophone quartet consists of four top musicians: Nikola Fabijanić, Gordan Tudor, Goran Jurković, and Tomislav Žužak. Through their work, they promote the works of Croatian composers, with a special emphasis on the oeuvre of Boris Papandopulo, after whom they are named. Their technical brilliance and expressiveness guarantee a memorable concert under the starry sky.
Theatre hits for laughter and reflection
Margaretino leto would not be complete without its theatre component, which every year attracts a large number of spectators eager for laughter and a good story. Three guest performances of popular comedies regularly fill the auditoriums to capacity, bringing the magic of the stage to the audience. This year's theatre series, after already opening with an excellent performance of the play "Hollywood", continues with new hits.
As early as tomorrow, on Thursday, June 26 at 9 p.m., at the House of Culture in Škrljevo, the "Moruzgva" theatre will guest-perform its hit "Prekid preko veze" (Breakup by Phone). This modern and dynamic comedy, based on a text by Tristan Petitgirard and directed by Krešimir Dolenčić, humorously deals with the problems of contemporary love relationships. Through a series of comical situations, the play explores how technology affects communication and breakups, and the brilliant cast guarantees an evening filled with laughter. It is important to note that this performance is an integral part of the rich program celebrating Škrljevo Day, whose grand finale will follow a day later, on Friday, June 27, with a traditional folk festival from 6 p.m.
The theatre program of Margaretino leto will conclude on Tuesday, July 22, at 9 p.m., on the unique stage of Žal ribara in the very heart of Bakar. The schedule features the play "Zabranjeno smijanje" (No Laughing), by the celebrated Teatar "Gavran". The work of Miro Gavran, one of the most performed Croatian playwrights in the world, brings an intelligent and layered comedy about male-female relationships, full of unexpected twists. This award-winning play, which has had numerous foreign performances, offers the audience a chance to laugh, but also to reflect on the eternal themes of love and life together. For all those planning a visit, finding accommodation in Bakar can be an excellent move to fully enjoy the festival.
Tickets for both theatre performances are available at a price of 10 euros. They can be purchased through the online system mojekarte.hr, at the office of the Bakar Tourist Board, or at the performance location, two hours before the start of the show.
