Fans of running, history, and unreal landscapes will soon get their due again. The beginning of July, specifically Sunday, July 6, 2025, is reserved for the eleventh edition of one of the most special and beautiful continental races in Croatia. This is the now legendary race for the sword of Count Draskovich, a sporting event that uniquely combines a physical challenge with a journey into a glorious past, all in the magnificent setting of one of Croatia's best-preserved castles. Numerous satisfied participants from the previous ten editions are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to once again be part of this story that has a soul.

Trakošćan in a new guise: A fairytale stage for a running spectacle

This year's edition of the race will be more special than ever, largely thanks to the renewed splendor of the surroundings themselves. After many years of extensive work, Trakošćan Lake has finally been cleared of accumulated sediment and refilled with water, restoring the entire landscape to a picture-postcard look. In addition, a large part of the promenade that circles the lake has been arranged and modernized, providing runners with an ideal and safe surface. The sight of Trakošćan Castle, which, after a long time, is again reflected in its full glory on the calm surface of the water, is something that simply must be experienced. This revitalized nature creates the perfect backdrop for an event that celebrates both sport and heritage, offering participants and visitors an unforgettable visual experience.

A journey through time: More than a race, an experience to remember

What sets the race for the sword of Count Draskovich apart from other sporting events is its unique historical character. Every year, the organizers strive to revive the spirit of bygone times, and this year will be no exception. Participants and spectators will be greeted by knights in shining armor, ladies and countesses in lavish crinolines, and a thunderous cannon shot will mark the start of the race in the most authentic way possible. The entire event is conceived as an interactive historical performance in which the runners are not just competitors, but active participants. A special seal and confirmation of authenticity is given by the traditional arrival of Count Nikolaus Draskovich and his family. Their presence is a direct link to the noble family that took over the castle back in 1584 and whose name the race proudly bears, and who regularly grace the winner announcement ceremony with their participation.

Challenges of the course: From the lake to the castle walls

The competitive part of the program is designed to satisfy both recreational and more serious runners. The main races are held on two distances. The shorter one, 5 kilometers, consists of one lap around the picturesque lake, while the more demanding one, 10 kilometers, includes two laps. The course is mostly flat and gently undulating, passing through the pleasant shade of the forest and is ideal for running. However, what brings a special adrenaline rush is the finish of the race itself. All competitors finish their race in a unique location – in the very courtyard of Trakošćan Castle. As a novelty this year, a special time measurement is being introduced on the ascent segment towards the castle. In the last approximately 400 meters of the course, from the beginning of the climb to the finish line, the split time will be measured, and the fastest on that section will be crowned with the title of "king" and "queen" of the climb. Before the main events, children's races will also be held, confirming the family character of the event and encouraging a love for sports from an early age. For all those planning to come, it is advisable to consider a weekend package to fully explore what Trakošćan has to offer.

A prize worthy of a winner: Win a real knight's sword

Every participant who successfully completes the 5 or 10-kilometer race will be rewarded for their effort with a unique finisher's medal in the shape of a sword, a symbol that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this competition. It is a souvenir that will remind every runner of this extraordinary feat for years to come. However, for the fastest, something truly spectacular is being prepared. The winners of the main 10-kilometer race, in both men's and women's categories, in addition to cash prizes and sponsor gifts, will for the first time receive real, large knight's swords as permanent ownership. This impressive prize represents the crown of victory in one of the most original races and will certainly be an additional motivation for the best runners to give their all on the course. Plan your arrival on time and secure accommodation in Trakošćan or the surrounding area to enjoy the entire program without a care.

Therefore, there is nothing left but to invite everyone to be a part of this running fairytale on July 6, 2025. Come, run through history, enjoy the renewed beauty of breathtaking nature, and feel the magnificent ambiance of one of the most beautiful European castles. Race registrations are open, and all additional information, including the detailed schedule and propositions, is available on the organizer's official website. Prepare your running shoes for the course and your soul for an experience to remember. See you at the foot of the Trakošćan castle walls!

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
