Spring in Karlovac brings two months of events: the city on four rivers opens the season with tours, exhibitions, workshops, and gastronomic offerings
On Monday, March 30, 2026, the Karlovac Tourist Board presented the program of spring activities that will be spread across several city locations during April and May, from the historic core and parks to cultural institutions, river facilities, and spaces intended for families with children. The new season was symbolically marked by the installation of 12 large Easter eggs in Šanac and Modrušan Park, and the entire program relies on cooperation between the public, private, and civil sectors with the aim of Karlovac once again confirming this spring its position as a city where tourism is not reduced only to a weekend visit, but to a complete experience of culture, nature, heritage, and contemporary amenities.
For quite some time now, Karlovac has been building the identity of a destination that bases its recognizability not only on the geographical fact that it lies on four rivers, but also on the combination of urban history, green public spaces, and a diverse program for residents and guests. This year’s edition of the Spring in Karlovac event is based precisely on that idea. Instead of one central event, visitors can expect a series of interconnected activities, from costumed and themed tours, through educational workshops, exhibitions, and film screenings, to gastronomic programs and outdoor events. Such an organizational model points to a clear intention to turn the spring months into a period of constant movement through the city, and not just into a series of separate dates that the audience follows in passing.
For visitors planning to spend several days in the city, the schedule of events at different locations could be of particular interest, because the event practically turns the whole of Karlovac into a stage open to several generations. That is why spring is also a good time to plan
accommodation in Karlovac, especially for guests who want to combine a cultural program, city walks, and a stay by the river.
A network of partners as the foundation of the program
This year’s program was created in cooperation with more than 20 partners, including city institutions, museum and cultural actors, educational institutions, associations, tourism and sports entities, as well as organizations active in Karlovac in the fields of heritage, nature, gastronomy, and creative industries. The program includes Aquatika, Museums of the City of Karlovac, Edison Cinema, Nikola Tesla Experience Center, City Library, Kaoperativa Association Alliance, Grain Barge, UTV Bastion, Dubovac Mountaineering Society, KAMAT, ZOAKD, Beekeeping Society Karlovac, ULAK, ZILIK, Katzler Pavilion, Vučjak Ethno House, Knjiguljica, Trade and Hospitality School, Natura Viva, StemKa, and Association Pan.
Such a broad partnership shows that the event is no longer viewed only as a promotional project of the tourist board, but as a platform that brings together activities that were previously often presented separately. In practice, this means that in one period a visitor can experience Karlovac through several faces: as a city of parks, a city of heritage, a city of family-oriented activities, a city of film and educational programs, but also as a gastronomic and excursion destination. For the local community, this is an important step forward because it increases the visibility of individual programs while at the same time creating a sense of a shared event identity.
The director of the Karlovac Tourist Board, Marina Burić, emphasized that this is the most extensive edition of Spring in Karlovac so far, both in the number of stakeholders involved and in content. The organizers’ message is clear already at the beginning of the season: Karlovac wants to be recognized as a year-round destination, and not exclusively as a summer or transit destination. In that sense, the spring program also has wider tourist significance, because it fills the period before the main summer events and encourages the arrival of guests looking for a calmer, content-rich city weekend.
From costumed tours to new interpretations of the city’s history
One of the most visible parts of the program consists of spring tours, among which five themed city tours with local guides stand out in particular, four of which are costumed. In recent years, this concept has become increasingly important in cultural tourism because it offers the visitor not just a series of facts, but an experience that brings history closer through storytelling, space, and characters. Karlovac has a good basis for that: the Renaissance Star, a layered military and civic history, recognizable figures, and numerous city stories that can be interpreted for both domestic and foreign audiences.
Special attention was drawn by the new tour titled “Through the River Gate into Karlovac’s Rich Past,” which already sparked interest in the announcement. The very idea of the title relies on a key element of Karlovac’s urban planning and defensive heritage, but also on the symbolism of entering the city through its historical layers. In a broader sense, such tours confirm that Karlovac is increasingly capitalizing on its own heritage for tourism purposes without folklorization and without superficial “sightseeing in passing.” Instead, the emphasis is on experience, interpretation, and contact with local guides.
For guests coming from other parts of Croatia, precisely such activities are often the reason to extend their stay, so along with the walking program and city tours it is logical to plan
accommodation close to the event locations, especially if the goal is to visit several locations in two days, from Radićeva Street and city parks to cultural centers and river spots.
Active spring and a city returning to public space
The program titled Active Spring continues the already familiar initiative “Walking for Health,” but also introduces a novelty – the Family Forest Adventure. This opens space for a different type of experience of the city and its surroundings, in which the organizers are counting not only on an audience interested in culture and events in the narrower city center, but also on families, recreational visitors, and visitors who want to spend spring outdoors.
Such programs are particularly suited to Karlovac because the city has a strong natural setting, recognizable parks and river areas, but also a tradition of spending time outdoors that is part of the local identity. At the same time, this further blurs the boundary between “tourist” and “local” content. The events are not set up as scenery for guests, but as a program first joined by citizens, and only then by visitors. That is precisely what gives the event the authenticity that is often sought in destination marketing, and rarely achieved.
Gastro spring: fish, strawberries, and new seasonal readings of menus
An important part of the event relates to gastronomy. According to the organizers’ announcement, Gastro Spring brings traditional fish dishes, seasonal specialties with strawberries, and newer program units such as “Flavors of the Seasons” and “Flavors of Europe.” In this way, the gastronomic story is trying to move away from a one-off offer and direct itself toward a clearer seasonal concept, which is particularly important in tourism because it gives the guest a reason to associate a specific period of the year with a specific experience.
In this segment, Karlovac relies on its geographical and culinary advantages. The city on four rivers is naturally associated with river fish dishes, while the spring part of the year opens space for lighter seasonal ingredients and dishes that can be attractive both to the local population and weekend guests. The statement by Damir Pleša, principal of the Trade and Hospitality School, further confirms that the program is not reduced only to repeating familiar patterns. An evening of Italian cuisine has been announced as part of the “Flavors of Europe” project, as well as new outdoor gastro activities, which points to an attempt to make the gastronomic offer more visible in public space and more accessible to a wider audience.
For tourists, this means that a spring arrival in Karlovac does not have to be only excursion-based, but can also be gastronomically motivated. Those who want to combine tours, parks, film programs, and restaurant offerings can easily plan a weekend stay and choose
accommodation offers in Karlovac depending on whether they want to be closer to the old city core, cultural locations, or green zones by the river.
Educational program for children, young people, and adults
Educational Spring is one of the most extensive chapters of the program. The announcement highlights story readings, literary meetings, pottery workshops, and the nurturing of tradition through the lighting of the Easter bonfire, but also larger events such as Book Night, Mihalić Days in the Mihalić House of Literature, the Knjiguljica children’s festival, and the STEM conference. In this way, Karlovac continues to build the profile of a city in which cultural and educational activities are not an addition, but one of the main engines of the events calendar.
For the local audience, such a schedule means that the program is not focused only on weekend outings, but also on family participation, school activities, and content with a longer-term educational effect. For guests, on the other hand, it means that Karlovac in the spring months offers not only “what to see,” but also “what to take part in.” This is particularly important at a time when city destinations are expected to offer more than a classic postcard and a few photographic points.
It is particularly interesting that the program also includes STEM content, thereby broadening the traditional image of a spring city event toward the contemporary interests of children and young people. Within this framework, a special place belongs to the Nikola Tesla Experience Center, which otherwise bases its identity on combining science, interactive learning, and entertainment.
Tesla, film, and content that broadens the event’s audience
Within the program, Tesla’s Spring Laboratory at the Nikola Tesla Experience Center stands out in particular. In recent years, this space has become one of Karlovac’s most recognizable new attractions, and its presence in the spring event further confirms the intention to tie the city’s tourist offer to an educational experience and a contemporary interpretation of Tesla’s legacy. The center is located next to Karlovac Gymnasium, at a location connected with Tesla’s education, and during the spring months it operates according to the summer schedule from April 1 to October 31, which is important for both individual visitors and organized groups.
The breadth of the program is also visible at Edison Cinema, where the Autism Festival and thematic film cycles dedicated to the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and to Portugal and Brazil, have been announced. In this way, the cinema does not function only as a venue for the regular repertoire, but also as a place for socially sensitive and culturally profiled programs. In the official announcement by Edison Cinema, the screening of the film “Bighead” as part of the Autism Festival was announced for April 2, 2026, with free admission, which confirms that the event in Karlovac does not neglect themes of inclusion and social visibility either.
Such a combination of content shows that the spring program is not addressing one narrow audience. On the contrary, it is trying to simultaneously include families with children, students, film lovers, visitors interested in science, recreational visitors, gastronomic guests, and audiences looking for cultural content in public space. It is precisely this breadth that is one of the main reasons why Karlovac becomes interesting in this period both for a short break and for a themed city weekend.
The aquarium, parks, and rivers as the natural stage of spring events
Spring by the aquarium brings educational and creative activities for children, including guided tours and animation programs by the Korana River on the occasion of Labor Day. In a city that relies strongly on its river identity and park settings, such content has an almost natural foundation. For years now, Aquatika has been one of the most recognizable attractions in Karlovac, and its inclusion in the program gives additional weight to activities intended for families and school groups.
The same is true of Spring in the Park, which includes an Easter egg hunt on Easter Monday, Days in the Park, an art colony, the marking of World Bee Day, and the event “Living with the Park.” Flea markets and musical performances are also organized on Saturday mornings at the Music Pavilion. This program line perhaps best shows how Karlovac uses its own spatial advantages. Instead of compressing all the content into one hall or a few institutions, the event spreads to promenades, parks, and open city points, making the walk through the city itself part of the event.
That is precisely why springtime Karlovac can also be attractive to those who are not coming specifically for just one event. It is enough to walk through the city, visit Šanac, the Promenade, park zones, and central city locations to feel how the event changes the rhythm of the city. For guests who want such a slower, content-rich stay, it is practical to look in advance for
accommodation for visitors to Karlovac and leave enough time for combining outdoor and indoor programs.
Easter eggs, exhibitions, and the visual identity of the spring city
This year’s spring exhibitions opened with the installation of 12 large Easter eggs painted with Karlovac motifs in Šanac and Modrušan Park. Thus, at the very beginning of the season, a visual sign of the event was created that is at the same time decorative, recognizable, and photogenic enough to attract residents and guests. Such installations today also have an additional role because they shape public space in a way that visitors easily share on social networks, and the city gains recognizable spring scenery without an aggressive commercial tone.
The program continues with the traditional Easter exhibition at ULAK and new exhibitions in city galleries and exhibition spaces. In combination with the art colony, ZILIK content, and the work of Katzler Pavilion, such an offer confirms that Karlovac is also seriously counting in the spring months on an audience interested in visual art and the local cultural scene.
The organizers’ message: Karlovac as a destination throughout the year
The Mayor of Karlovac and president of the Tourist Board, Damir Mandić, supported the program with the message that Spring in Karlovac shows how diligently city associations and institutions work and that the content created through this cooperation can be attractive both to the people of Karlovac and to guests from outside the city. That statement also summarizes the broader meaning of the event. Its success will not be measured only by the number of events held, but also by how much Karlovac in the spring months will act as a city that lives its public spaces, cultural institutions, and natural locations.
In tourism terms, this is an important phase of the annual calendar. Spring is a period when visitors more often choose shorter trips, weekend stays, and cities that offer a combination of content without the summer crowds. Karlovac has a clear advantage here: good transport connections, the strong symbolism of the city on four rivers, promenades and parks, the historic core, new interpretive content such as the Tesla Center, and a cultural program diverse enough to attract both families and individual guests. All of this suggests that the Spring in Karlovac event is no longer just a seasonal announcement of events, but an important tool in shaping the image of a city that offers the visitor a reason to come, stay, and return.
