The Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka, in its role as guardian of one of the most valuable cultural and historical jewels of Kvarner, Trsat Castle, is intensively working on its revitalization and enrichment of content. One year after taking over management, based on the decision of the City Council of the City of Rijeka, significant progress is visible in infrastructure investments and the program offer that attracts an increasing number of visitors. This strategic decision aims to position Trsat Castle as an indispensable destination on the tourist map of Croatia, and to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Significant Infrastructure Improvements and Security Measures

The past period has been marked by extensive infrastructure works that have improved the functionality and security of this historic building. At the end of 2024, more precisely in December, electricity connections were made by HEP in the area of Trsat Castle and Nugent Park. This crucial step enabled the organization of various musical and cultural events in the heart of Nugent Park, opening up new possibilities for visitors.

The beginning of the current year brought further improvements with a focus on security. Modern alarm systems and a video surveillance system have been implemented, significantly improving the protection of visitors and the object itself. These systems represent a key component in preserving cultural heritage and ensuring a pleasant and safe stay for all who visit the castle.

Conservation Research and Further Plans

April was dedicated to conservation research on the entrance tower of Trsat Castle. These works, of extreme importance for preserving the authenticity and historical value of the object, are being carried out thanks to funds from the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia. The Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka received support in the amount of 70,000 euros through the Public Call for Proposals for Public Needs in Culture for 2025, which testifies to the importance of the project at the national level.

Works are also underway on the construction of a water supply branch in Nugent Park. This investment will ensure adequate infrastructure for the organization of future manifestations and events, making the park even more attractive for visitors. The Tourist Board of the City of Rijeka also announces additional investments in the coming period, with the aim of further increasing the security, quality, and arrangement of the space, and enriching the program offer. All these activities are aimed at creating a comprehensive experience for visitors, combining historical heritage with modern content.

Summer at Gradina: Trsat Castle's Cultural and Entertainment Magnet

Trsat Castle and Nugent Park will again this year, as in previous seasons, become the epicenter of cultural and entertainment events. The traditional manifestation "Summer at Gradina" promises a rich and diverse program that will attract numerous visitors. Throughout the summer months, visitors will be able to enjoy concerts by renowned performers, fascinating exhibitions, theater performances for all ages, and thematic music evenings that will bring the historical walls of the castle to life. This manifestation, in addition to enriching the tourist offer of Rijeka, also contributes to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, creating a unique synergy of past and present.

Trsat Castle: More Than a Quarter Million Visitors and Introduction of Entrance Fee

Trsat Castle is undeniably one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region. Data for 2024 testify to an impressive number of over 250,000 domestic and foreign guests who passed through this historic building, which ranks it among the most popular destinations in Croatia. Its historical importance, fascinating architecture, and panoramic view of Rijeka and Kvarner attract visitors of all generations.

With the aim of ensuring long-term sustainability and further investment in the preservation and development of the castle, as of June 17, 2025, an entrance fee has been introduced for all visitors. This measure is necessary to cover the costs of maintaining the facility, ensure the quality of informative and educational content, and enable further development. It is important to emphasize that entry for residents of Rijeka, upon presentation of appropriate proof of residence, remains free, thus aiming to preserve the connection of the local community with this historical symbol.

Informative and Educational Content Included in the Ticket Price

The ticket price includes access to a series of informative and educational contents that enrich the visit and provide a deeper insight into the history and significance of Trsat Castle. Visitors can explore informative and educational panels about the rich history of the Castle, located within the "Mir junaka" mausoleum. These panels provide a detailed overview of the key events and personalities that shaped the destiny of the castle throughout centuries.

Additionally, multimedia content dedicated to Laval Nugent, a significant historical figure closely related to Trsat Castle, is available in the Small Gallery-cave below the mausoleum. These interactive contents vividly depict the life and work of Laval Nugent in a modern way, providing visitors with a unique insight into his role in the history of the Castle and the wider area.

The informative and educational offer is rounded off by the "Paths of the Frankopans" Interpretation Center. In this center, visitors can get detailed information about the famous Croatian noble family Frankopan, who played a key role in the construction of Trsat, as well as many other castles throughout the region. The center provides a comprehensive overview of their history, cultural and political influence, and legacy that shaped Croatian identity.

Opening Hours and Ticket Prices

The entrance fee to Trsat Castle will be charged from 9 AM to 8 PM, which is also the working hours of the Info Point and Interpretation Center. For all visitors who wish to enjoy the charms of the castle after 8 PM, entry will be free, providing them with an opportunity for an evening stroll and a unique view of the illuminated Rijeka.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
