Grandma's cakes again in Zlatar: scents of tradition, homemade cakes and contestants' grandmothers

In the heart of Hrvatsko Zagorje, on April 26, 2025, Zlatar will once again become the epicenter of sweet scents and tradition thanks to the 17th edition of the "Babičini kolači" (Grandma's Cakes) event. This unique event brings together grandmothers from Zagorje who proudly present authentic desserts, passing down inherited recipes from generation to generation.

Sweet competitions and rich tradition

This year's competition will feature 33 grandmothers from different parts of Krapina-Zagorje County. Each of them will present her cake, judged on the authenticity of the recipe, taste, appearance, and creativity in presentation. Special attention is also paid to the visual impression, where the judges evaluate how well the contestants managed to evoke the spirit of Zagorje tradition through their clothing and the decoration of their exhibition space.

Jury of experts

The jury consists of renowned gastronomic experts: Branko Čukelj, vice-president of the Croatian Culinary Federation and president of this year's commission, Štefica Gulija, owner of the "Tri užitka" pastry shop from Bedekovčina, and Dražen Đurišević, promoter of Podravka cuisine. Their expertise guarantees fairness and quality of judging.

Special recognitions and awards

In addition to the main prizes, the "Izvorno zagorsko" (Originally from Zagorje) award will be presented for the best visual impression. This category evaluates authenticity in presenting Zagorje culture and tradition. Also, after the event, a book with recipes from all contestants will be published, further preserving and promoting the rich gastronomic heritage of Zagorje.

Last year's winner and inspiration

Last year's winner, Mirjana Štahan from Zlatar, won the hearts of the jury and visitors with her cake "Jurjevski beciklin" (George's Little Bicycle). This dessert, inspired by the story of a boy named Jurica and his desire for a bicycle, symbolizes the love and ingenuity of Zagorje grandmothers. Mirjana will have the honor of opening the event in her hometown this year.

Applications and additional information

Applications for participation in the event were accepted until February 28, 2025. The organizers, Krapina-Zagorje County and the Krapina-Zagorje County Tourist Board, in cooperation with the Town of Zlatar, have ensured a rich program and an unforgettable experience for all participants and visitors.
