Neymar saved Santos with two goals, but draw with bottom-placed Chapecoense deepened concerns
Neymar returned to the Santos squad after the World Cup and immediately took the leading role, but even his two goals were not enough for a victory against Chapecoense. The match in the 20th round of the Brazilian championship, played on July 25, 2026, at the Vila Belmiro stadium in Santos, ended in a 2:2 draw. Neymar gave Santos the lead in the 36th minute after a quick combination with Álvaro Barreal, and then converted a penalty in the 88th minute to prevent defeat. Between those two moments, Chapecoense took advantage of the home side's decline, turned the score around and showed why Santos, despite the high-profile names in the squad, still cannot establish stability. A point against the bottom-placed team was therefore received at Vila Belmiro more as a warning than as a success.
The two-goal scorer also marked the match with celebrations that directly recalled discussions about his activities away from the football pitch. After the first goal, Neymar mimed dealing poker cards with his gestures, and then used the corner flag like a golf club. UOL reported that both gestures referred to photographs from a golf course in the United States and to his participation in poker tournaments after Brazil's elimination from the World Cup. The celebration was a response to critics who questioned his priorities, especially after he did not travel for Santos' away match in Venezuela in the Copa Sudamericana. On the pitch, the message was clear: Neymar wanted to show that he could still decide matches, although the final result simultaneously confirmed how dependent the team is on his individual quality.
Return after more than two months in a club shirt
The match against Chapecoense was Neymar's first appearance for Santos in more than two months and his first club match after the 2026 World Cup. According to UOL, he had previously played for the club on May 17 against Coritiba, while during the World Cup he appeared twice for Brazil, both times as a substitute. Brazil lost 2:1 to Norway in the round of 16 on July 5, and Neymar converted a late penalty for Brazil's only goal. Santos dominated, Neymar found space between the lines

According to UOL's report, the visitors organised themselves in a compact 4-5-1 formation, intending to reduce the space between the defence and midfield and allow the home side to take the initiative. Neymar therefore did not remain in one position. He moved from the left towards the centre, dropped back to receive the ball and tried to draw markers out of the block so that Barreal and the other attackers could find space to run behind the last line. Before the goal, he also tried a shot from outside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Matheus Aurélio stopped the ball.
The lead came after a move that summed up the best part of Santos' play. Neymar combined with Barreal on the edge of and inside the penalty area, received the return pass and finished the attack first time with his right foot and precision. Different reports place the move at the end of the 35th or the beginning of the 36th minute, while the official match record lists it as a goal in the 36th minute. It was a move executed without unnecessary touches, exactly the kind Santos had been missing against a deeply positioned defence. The home side retained their 1:0 lead until the break, and the impression was that they were controlling the match and that an increase in tempo could open the way to a more convincing victory.
Chapecoense turned the match around through the right side of the attack
After the break, the balance of power changed surprisingly quickly. Chapecoense became more direct, increased the number of players in attack and began attacking the space on the left side of the Santos defence. In the 52nd minute, Giovanni Augusto received the ball on the right wing and sent a low pass towards the centre, where Marcinho completed the move for 1:1. The home defence reacted passively, without closing down the passer in time and without controlling the player who was moving towards goal. The goal changed the psychological course of the match because Santos, instead of calmly managing their lead, suddenly had to build attacks again against an opponent that had gained confidence.
A similar pattern brought the visitors a complete turnaround in the 64th minute. Giovanni Augusto was again involved in the development of the move on the right side, Yannick Bolasie sent a low ball into the penalty area, and João Ananias attempted to intercept the pass. The defensive intervention ended in an own goal and a 2:1 lead for Chapecoense. For Santos, however, the more important fact was that both goals conceded came from very similar situations and from the same side of the pitch, something Cuca particularly emphasised after the match.
Neymar took responsibility in the closing stages
After falling behind, Santos tried to increase the pressure through substitutions and by placing more players in front of the visitors' penalty area. Cuca introduced Gabriel Menino and Gustavo Caballero, and the home side searched for an equaliser with long-range shots, crosses and individual runs. After Barreal's cross, Gabigol had an opportunity to finish the move first time, but failed to hit the target. Neymar's celebration of the first goal was one of the central images of the match. First, he mimed dealing cards with his hands, clearly alluding to poker, and then performed the motion characteristic of swinging a golf club. The criticism was not directed at the mere fact that he engages in other activities, but at the issue of timing and the impression created when the club's most famous player does not travel to an important international match. Santos and coach Cuca maintained that the absence had been planned in advance and was related to physical workload, not to the footballer's private schedule.
The double celebration can therefore be interpreted as an attempt to redirect the discussion from his private life to his performance. Two goals after a long break gave Neymar a strong argument at that moment, but they did not eliminate the broader question of his availability and continuity. During 2026, Santos repeatedly had to adjust their plans to his physical condition, international duties and return to a competitive rhythm. His value in the final third remained obvious: against Chapecoense, he participated in creating the penalty, took responsibility for converting it and had earlier broken through a closed defence with individual class. At the same time, the match showed that even the best individual performance cannot conceal collective failures in defensive organisation.
Yellow card brought a new complication
The evening did not pass without consequences for Neymar's availability in the continuation of the championship. In the 75th minute, he received a yellow card after a foul by Bruno Tubarão, an angry reaction and a confrontation with opposing players. Ge stated that it was his third yellow card in the competition, which means he will miss the league match against Athletico Paranaense on August 9 at Vila Belmiro. The suspension comes at a time when Santos are trying to find a run of results that would move them away from the relegation zone. The coaching staff will therefore once again have to find a solution without the player who scored both goals against Chapecoense.
The card situation further reduces the practical value of his comeback performance. Neymar showed that he is ready to play an important creative and goalscoring role, but he will watch the next league match from off the pitch. Before that, Santos have Copa Sudamericana commitments against Universidad Central and ties against Remo in the Brazilian Cup, so the schedule leaves little time for developing cohesion. Managing his playing time will remain a sensitive issue, especially after the World Cup and a period without club matches. He particularly highlighted two positioning errors on the left side of the defence, from which both Chapecoense goals originated.
Cuca openly admitted that the possibility of relegation concerned him. According to his calculation, Santos need at least another 23 points from the remaining 18 rounds to reach the mark of 45, which is often used in the Brazilian championship as an approximate survival target. The coach also warned that individual quality alone is not enough if the team lacks collective balance. According to him, Santos had the technically strongest available team in the starting line-up, but failed to confirm that advantage in the second half. Although the home side finished the match with 21 shots, the volume of attempts did not translate into control or three points.
Chapecoense earned a point, Santos remained dependent on the star's flash of brilliance
For Chapecoense, the away draw had a different value. The bottom-placed team showed an ability to respond after a weaker first half, exploited a recurring weakness in their opponent and came within a few minutes of a major victory. The point did not significantly change their difficult position in the table, but the performance after the break offered an argument that the team had not yet given up the fight for survival. The visitors did not create a large number of chances, but they were efficient when they found space near the touchline and forced the home defence to run towards its own goal. Such pragmatism contrasted with Santos' play, which looked technically superior for a long time but was not secure enough.
For the home side, the biggest positive news was the return of Neymar's goalscoring. After a long club break and disappointment at the World Cup, the 34-year-old forward once again showed composure in front of goal and the ability to change the direction of a match with a few moves. Nevertheless, whistles from the stands after the final whistle showed that the supporters were not prepared to celebrate an individual performance after a missed victory. Against the team at the bottom of the table, Santos had the lead, territorial superiority and the match's most famous player in excellent form, but still had to rescue a point in the closing stages. That contrast remained the most important message of the match: Neymar returned with goals, but Santos' problems did not disappear with his return.
