Cycling, whether it's for weekend recreation, a daily commute to work, or serious sports engagement, is experiencing a true renaissance. In a world where data is becoming key to understanding and improving every activity, cyclists are increasingly seeking precise metrics to optimize their performance. One of the most important, yet most inaccessible indicators until recently, was cycling power – a direct insight into the effort expended and the rider's efficiency. Measuring power, expressed in watts (W), represents the gold standard in professional cycling because it offers an objective picture of current form, allowing cyclists to precisely dose their energy during long rides or intense races and to structure their training with unparalleled precision.
Imagine the human body as an engine; the more power that engine can produce and sustain, the faster the bicycle will move. Understanding one's own power capabilities allows a rider to make smarter decisions – when to attack on a climb, when to rest in a draft, or what pace to maintain to endure the planned route without "bonking." However, entering the world of power measurement has traditionally been reserved for professionals and enthusiasts with deeper pockets. Specialized power meters, which are installed in the pedals, crankset, or rear hub, represented a significant financial and technical barrier. Their price often reaches hundreds, even thousands of euros, and their installation and calibration require technical knowledge and adjustment, which deterred many recreational cyclists from this advanced training tool. It is precisely this barrier that the latest technological innovation from Huawei breaks down.
A revolution on the wrist: Virtual power measurement
The new series of smartwatches, HUAWEI WATCH GT 6, enters the scene, bringing a revolutionary change that democratizes access to advanced cycling data. This is the first smartwatch on the market that integrates the function of virtual cycling power measurement directly on the user's wrist. This means that every cyclist, from beginner to experienced amateur, can now have insight into power data in real time, without the need to invest in expensive and complicated additional equipment. The precision offered by this system is comparable to that achieved by professional devices, thereby elevating the riding experience and training quality to a completely new, previously unimaginable level for a device of this kind.
The science behind the precision: How does Huawei's algorithm work?
The key challenge in any high-speed cycling is air resistance, also known as aerodynamic drag. This is the force on which a cyclist expends the majority of their energy, especially at speeds above 20 km/h. Precise modeling of this resistance is therefore crucial for an accurate calculation of the power generated. Aware of this challenge, Huawei undertook extensive research in collaboration with one of the world's leading laboratories for aerodynamic testing.
An incredible 1,155 different test scenarios were conducted in a wind tunnel. The research included 11 different body types, to account for anatomical differences among riders, and the five most common categories of bicycles: road, mountain (MTB), city, folding, and public bikes. In addition, the tests were conducted at seven different levels of wind speed, ranging from 10 to 50 km/h. All this data was collected to create an extremely robust and sophisticated mathematical model that forms the basis of the advanced algorithm for calculating virtual power in the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 series.
Thanks to this advanced algorithm, the user only needs to enter a few basic parameters into the Huawei Health app – their height, weight, and the type of bicycle they are using. The watch then, using data from integrated sensors like GPS, barometer, and accelerometer, automatically calculates the cycling power. The probability of error is less than +/- 15 W, which is a level of precision that almost completely matches that of dedicated professional power meters. The biggest advantage is, of course, simplicity – all relevant data is available instantly, directly on the watch screen, without any additional equipment or complex calibration procedures.
HUAWEI WATCH GT 6: A comprehensive partner for cycling challenges
Although the virtual power meter is the main star, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 series of smartwatches offers much more than that, positioning itself as the ideal companion for every cycling challenge. At the heart of the watch is the advanced TruSeen™ heart rate monitoring system, which tracks heartbeats in real time with exceptional precision, even during the most intense intervals. This data is key for monitoring load, defining training zones, and ensuring safety during a ride.
For precise motion tracking, the advanced Sunflower positioning technology is responsible. This dual-band GNSS system with five constellations (GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS) ensures outstanding accuracy in measuring speed, distance traveled, and mapping the route. Whether you are riding through dense city canyons with tall buildings or on remote forest trails, the signal remains stable and reliable. The watch covers all the key metrics a cyclist needs: from tracking changes in heart rate and displaying real-time pace to advanced route tracking with the ability to return to the starting point. All of this makes it an indispensable tool for performance analysis and planning future training sessions.
