Lošinj, recognized as the Island of Vitality, has achieved an exceptionally significant success by becoming the first island in the Mediterranean to receive the prestigious Green Destinations – GOLD AWARD. This international recognition was awarded due to impressive achievements in sustainable development, ecology, and responsible tourism, positioning Lošinj as a leader among tourist destinations not only in Croatia but also beyond.

What does the Green Destinations certificate mean?

The Green Destinations program recognizes and certifies destinations that meet strict sustainability standards in environmental, social, and cultural aspects. This certification is based on evidence and is fully aligned with the international standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The process is highly demanding and includes more than a hundred criteria, covering resource management, social responsibility, preservation of natural beauty, and promotion of local culture.

Lošinj passed rigorous evaluation phases, including extensive documentation collection and field review, proving its commitment to sustainability. Particularly high results were achieved in the categories of cultural heritage preservation, social well-being, and protection of natural resources.

International recognition at the global gathering

The certificate presentation took place during the 10th annual Green Destinations conference, held from December 10 to 12, 2024, in Punta Arenas, Chile. The conference gathered more than a hundred leading sustainability experts from around the world. The recognition Lošinj received highlights its position as a model among Mediterranean and global tourist destinations.

Statements from key figures

The Mayor of Mali Lošinj, Ana Kučić, expressed pride in this extraordinary achievement. "The Green Destinations GOLD AWARD confirms our commitment to nature conservation, promoting sustainable tourism, and ensuring a better future for the next generations. This recognition is not only the result of local authorities' efforts but also of all the citizens of Lošinj who contribute to the sustainability of our community through their daily actions," said the mayor.

The Director of the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board, Dalibor Cvitković, emphasized that this recognition is the result of years of hard work and effort. "We are proud to be listed among the best sustainable destinations and that our initiatives in environmental preservation serve as an example for other destinations. This recognition motivates us to continue investing in projects that promote sustainability and the preservation of natural beauty," said Cvitković.

Responsibility and future plans

Lošinj continuously works on improving its sustainable practices. Through various projects, the goal is to educate the local community and tourists about the importance of preserving natural resources and to involve them in activities that contribute to sustainable development. Planned projects include the implementation of green technologies, promotion of local production, and further enhancement of infrastructure in line with sustainability principles.

The Green Destinations program further encourages destinations to continue developing through periodic evaluations every two to three years. This methodology ensures long-term commitment to high standards in managing natural and social resources.

Lošinj as a model of sustainable tourism

Since 2016, when it was included in the Top 100 sustainable destinations list, Lošinj has been dedicated to improving its practices in tourism and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Hosting the Green Destinations conference in Mali Lošinj in 2019 further solidified its reputation as a global leader in sustainable tourism.

This historic moment for Lošinj serves as an encouragement for other Croatian destinations to follow its example and join the global movement for responsible management of tourist resources. Continued investment in sustainability and innovative projects ensures that Lošinj remains a leading destination and inspiration for many.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
