Tomorrow, on Friday, May 30th, the City of Sveti Ivan Zelina proudly invites all its citizens and visitors to an all-day celebration of Statehood Day. This significant date in Croatian history will be marked by a series of events starting in the morning and lasting late into the evening, offering a blend of solemn remembrance and relaxed communal gathering in the area of the Sports and Recreation Centre Zelina, where a large, appropriately decorated tent will be set up for this occasion.

The Importance of Statehood Day and Remembrance of the Victims

Statehood Day is observed in memory of the constitution of the first democratically elected multi-party Parliament on May 30, 1990, which represents a key moment in recent Croatian history and the beginning of the path towards autonomy and independence. It is a day when we remember with special piety all those who laid down their lives for the freedom of the homeland. Accordingly, the official part of the programme in Sveti Ivan Zelina will begin at 10 a.m. Mayor Hrvoje Košćec, together with representatives of the City, will lay wreaths and light candles at the memorial to the fallen Croatian defenders at the City Cemetery. This act of paying tribute symbolizes lasting gratitude and remembrance of their sacrifice, which is woven into the foundations of the modern Croatian state.

Sveti Ivan Zelina: A City That Remembers

The City of Sveti Ivan Zelina, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, cherishes with special care the memory of its defenders. The commemorative part of the Statehood Day celebration is an important segment that emphasizes the importance of the Homeland War and the contribution of the local community to the creation of an independent Croatia. Mayor Košćec, who has been at the head of the city since 2013, often emphasizes the importance of such moments for strengthening community spirit and preserving national identity. Under his leadership, Sveti Ivan Zelina has seen significant development, including the successful withdrawal of funds from EU funds for numerous projects, which has contributed to improving the quality of life for all residents.

Gastronomic Unity and Folk Festivity

After the solemn morning part, the programme moves to the area of the Sports and Recreation Centre Zelina, where preparations for a large gastronomic gathering will begin at noon. Numerous associations operating in the area of the City of Sveti Ivan Zelina will showcase their culinary skills by preparing a traditional "surprise cauldron". The smells of local specialities will spread through the area of the Sports and Recreation Centre, and all assembled citizens will have the opportunity to taste the prepared delicacies free of charge from 6 p.m. This communal cooking and feasting represents the heart of the popular celebration, symbolizing the unity and hospitality of the Zelina region.

The Cauldron as a Symbol of Togetherness

Preparing a cauldron is a traditional way of gathering and socializing in many parts of Croatia, and in Sveti Ivan Zelina this custom holds a special place. By involving local associations in the preparation, the City encourages the active participation of citizens in observing important dates and strengthens mutual connections within the community. It is expected that the diversity of recipes and skills of the association members will result in a rich and tasty offer for all visitors.

Evening Entertainment for All Generations

As the day progresses, the atmosphere at the Sports and Recreation Centre Zelina will become increasingly lively. A DJ will take care of the good mood, whose musical selection will warm up the audience and prepare them for the highlight of the evening. From 9 p.m., the popular tamburica ensemble Gazde will take the stage. Their energetic performances and famous hits guarantee excellent entertainment and dancing late into the night. Gazde, known for their long-standing career and numerous hits that combine traditional tamburica sound with modern elements, will surely attract a large number of visitors and create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Gazde – Legends of the Tamburica Scene

The tamburica ensemble Gazde is one of the most famous and longest-lasting ensembles on the Croatian music scene. Founded decades ago, they gained cult status thanks to songs like "Još i danas zamiriše trešnja" (The Cherry Tree Still Smells Sweet Today), "Zbog tebe sam to što jesam" (Because of You I Am What I Am) and many others that have become an indispensable part of all celebrations. Their concerts are known for their extraordinary atmosphere and interaction with the audience, making them an ideal choice for such a festive occasion as Statehood Day in Sveti Ivan Zelina.

An Invitation to All for a Joint Celebration

The City of Sveti Ivan Zelina and Mayor Hrvoje Košćec extend a cordial invitation to all citizens, as well as guests from neighboring towns, to join the Statehood Day celebration. This is an opportunity to mark one of the most important dates in Croatian history together, in a spirit of unity and pride. The organizers encourage all visitors to come in "chequered" shirts, bring Croatian insignia, and enhance this event with their presence. The Sports and Recreation Centre Zelina area, located at Vladimira Nazora Street, will be the central gathering place, and an appropriately decorated tent will ensure a pleasant stay regardless of weather conditions. A day filled with patriotism, gastronomic delights, and top-notch entertainment is expected.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
