Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB), the most important research institution in Croatia, is celebrating a decade of participation in the Central European Consortium for Research Infrastructures (CERIC-ERIC). This international consortium has provided IRB and the entire Croatian scientific community with access to cutting-edge technologies, tools, and scientific networks, significantly raising Croatia's profile on the global research stage.


Decade of Progress Through Collaboration


Since 2014, when IRB became part of CERIC-ERIC, synergy has been achieved between the domestic and international scientific communities. The consortium provides access to advanced research techniques that scientists in many countries cannot easily achieve. Thanks to this collaboration, IRB has carried out projects crucial for energy, medicine, environmental preservation, and the development of technologies shaping the future.


IRB's Accelerator System: Regional Leader


IRB's accelerator system, unique in the region, has been a crucial tool for research in the field of materials for green energy, advanced medical diagnostics, and the development of ecological technologies over the past decade. Special attention has been given to researching microplastics and their impact on human health, which has become a globally significant issue.


With two accelerators and a number of experimental lines, IRB has enabled research in the field of ion beam interactions with materials, the development of new energy storage materials, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The O-ZIP project, worth 72 million euros, involves relocating this system to a new building by the end of 2025, further expanding research capabilities and ensuring long-term stability.


Funding and Challenges


Maintaining the accelerator system represents a significant financial challenge, with annual maintenance costs of 200,000 euros. IRB relies on international projects such as Horizon Europe, EuroFusion, and transnational access programs supported by CERIC-ERIC. Recent investments include funding for the modernization of the ion implanter and experimental lines.


In addition, the consortium has secured two doctoral positions worth 300,000 euros for the development of radiation detectors and materials analysis methods. These initiatives not only strengthen scientific infrastructure but also attract young talent, encouraging them to stay in Croatia.

Notable projects include the research on the structure of DNA by Dr. Janez Plavec and the analysis of the effects of radiation on materials led by Dr. Marko Karlušić. Additionally, IRB has participated in projects investigating lithium in batteries, environmental pollution, and methods for preserving historical artifacts.


Croatia's Role in the European Research Space


Through CERIC-ERIC, Croatia has solidified its position in the European scientific community. Dr. Andrew Harrison, executive director of CERIC-ERIC, highlighted that Croatia has the highest engagement per capita among consortium member countries, which speaks to the high quality of collaboration. This engagement is not only the result of advanced infrastructure but also the excellent work of Croatian scientists.

The Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports has highlighted CERIC-ERIC as an example of collaboration that advances science and society. Jelena Ilić Dreven from the Ministry emphasized that investments in infrastructure and international projects reflect on all levels of research and education, enabling Croatia to remain competitive in the global scientific arena.
