At the heart of the Istrian pearl, Rovinj, an initiative that connects tourism, ecology and biodiversity conservation – the “Postanite heroj prirode” project – has begun. This initiative has a clear goal: to raise awareness about the importance of bees in the ecosystem, nature protection and to promote sustainable tourism through concrete actions. In a time when the world is facing serious environmental challenges, every contribution to sustainability becomes crucial for the future of the planet.

Bees – the invisible heroes of nature

Bees are far more than honey producers – they are irreplaceable plant pollinators, responsible for one third of the food we consume. Their role in maintaining agricultural production and the stability of the ecosystem is invaluable. However, in recent years the global bee population has witnessed a dramatic decline due to climate change, habitat loss, pesticides and diseases. That is why it is important to take measures to ensure their survival.

A beehive in the service of environmental protection

As a concrete step towards bee protection, the Tourist Board of the town of Rovinj-Rovigno has set up its beehive in cooperation with local beekeepers. Located in a natural environment far from industrial and urban pollution, this beehive is home to about 50,000 bees that have ideal conditions for pollination and the production of quality honey.

Caring for bees and honey production

For the maintenance of the beehive and the health of the bee community, an experienced beekeeper is responsible for ensuring adequate nutrition, health protection and optimal conditions for colony growth. He also takes care of preventing diseases that could endanger the bees and of the proper rearing of the queen, a key element for the stability of the community.

Tourism and ecology – a blend of the future

This project is not only ecological, it also has strong tourism potential. Visitors to Rovinj can learn more about the importance of bees, participate in beekeeping workshops and even try fresh, local honey produced right in this beehive. Sustainable tourism is becoming an increasingly sought-after concept, and Rovinj is positioning itself as a destination that combines nature, tradition and responsible business through such projects.

Promotion of local products

As a result of the project, the produced acacia honey is packaged in jars with the label of the Rovinj Tourist Board, which further promotes local production and authentic Istrian products. Visitors can take home a souvenir that is not only a gastronomic delight but also a symbol of sustainable development and care for nature.

Ecological benefits and sustainability

Besides the direct benefits in protecting bees, the project brings a series of additional ecological advantages. Bees are responsible for the pollination of a large number of plant species, thereby contributing to the preservation of vegetation, which has a positive effect on biodiversity. Moreover, increased awareness of the importance of bee protection can encourage citizens and other institutions to undertake similar projects.

Accommodation and sustainable stay in Rovinj

Tourists coming to Rovinj can choose from various forms of accommodation, from luxurious hotels to ecological camps and family guesthouses. Many accommodation units are increasingly implementing sustainable practices such as the use of solar energy, recycling and the use of local ecological products, thereby further supporting the green transformation of tourism.

Raising awareness and long-term impact

The Rovinj-Rovigno Tourist Board plans to continue educating citizens and visitors through various activities related to environmental protection. Lectures, workshops and guided nature tours will be organized to emphasize the importance of preserving bees and ecosystems. The goal is to encourage other cities and institutions to follow this example and actively participate in ecological initiatives.

The “Postanite heroj prirode” project represents a blend of ecology, tourism and social responsibility. Through concrete steps such as installing beehives and promoting local production, Rovinj is setting a standard for the sustainable development of destinations. This model can serve as inspiration for other tourist centers that wish to combine natural resources, environmental protection and economic development into a harmonious whole.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
