During the past weekend, traffic authorities conducted comprehensive actions aimed at increasing road safety, as well as sanctioning drivers who violate traffic regulations. These measures were aimed at reducing the number of accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users, especially during the summer months when traffic is heavier.

As part of these actions, 27 cases of speeding were identified. Some drivers are not aware of the dangers of speeding, not only for themselves but also for other road users.

Additionally, 7 drivers were found to be operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. The highest recorded blood alcohol concentration was 2.04 g/kg for a driver stopped on Saturday, August 10th, in the Brinje area. This driver, a 36-year-old Croatian citizen, posed a serious threat to road safety. Driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents, despite ongoing efforts to raise awareness about this issue.

Another significant problem is the failure to use seat belts, with 28 such offenses recorded. A seat belt is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect vehicle occupants.

Motorcyclist Safety
In addition to preventive activities, special emphasis was placed on the safety of motorcyclists and moped riders, as they are among the most vulnerable road users. All two-wheeler drivers are advised of the necessity to adhere to traffic regulations to reduce the number of accidents and increase road safety.

One of the more serious accidents occurred in Lovinac, on state road number 50. A 26-year-old driver from Vrgorac lost control of his motorcycle when entering a left turn, resulting in a fall and collision with a guardrail. After the impact, the motorcycle caught fire, and the driver sustained serious injuries.

Accident Statistics
During the weekend, a total of 18 traffic accidents were recorded in the area of the Lika-Senj Police Department. Two of them involved minor injuries, while the remaining accidents resulted in material damage. The accidents with minor injuries occurred in Novalja and Otočac, while the others were recorded in Otočac (5), Gospić (3), Novalja (3), and Senj (4).

Despite ongoing efforts, maintaining road safety during the summer season, when the number of vehicles significantly increases, is challenging. The police urge all drivers to be cautious and responsible, adhering to all regulations.

Electric Bicycle Thefts
In addition to traffic issues, the police also face challenges related to thefts. Over the past weekend, the theft of two electric bicycles was reported in a national park. The bicycles, owned by a 55-year-old German citizen, were stolen from a car rack.

The police department is conducting an investigation and is calling on anyone with information about these events to come forward so that the perpetrators can be quickly identified. The increased presence of tourists in national parks also brings heightened security challenges, and it is important for all visitors to be aware of their responsibilities.

Road safety and the protection of citizens' and tourists' property remain priorities for the police department. Continuous efforts are made in implementing preventive measures and educating the public to reduce crime and accident rates.

As part of these efforts, the police will continue to conduct inspections and actions throughout the year to ensure the safety of all road users and maintain public security. We invite all citizens to cooperate with the police to create a safer community together.
