For years, the Bakar region has been delighting its visitors not only with its natural beauty and seaside atmosphere, but also with a rich cultural offering that leaves no one indifferent. The town of Bakar stands out as a destination that offers much more than ordinary tourist tours – its inhabitants successfully combine history and tradition with modern ways of presentation, creating unique experiences for every visitor. The best example of this is this year's "A Walk Through History," part of the program of the famous Margaret's Summer festival, which takes place on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

A unique opportunity to get to know old Bakar through crafts and stories

This event has been gathering lovers of culture, history, and local customs for years, and this year it is preparing a particularly rich and diverse program. The center of events will be the Upper Town, where from 7 p.m. visitors will be able to peek into the world of traditional crafts that have shaped the life of Bakar's people through the centuries. The Ordo Sancti Viti Association in the Bakar Castle will stage a revived history through calligraphy workshops, a weapon exhibition, and a presentation of ancient cuisine with the possibility of tasting authentic dishes.

In parallel, from 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot in front of the church of St. Andrew the Apostle, an interactive adventure walk "Who Goes to the Games" begins, led by the famous guide Marko Sladić. This program is designed as an exciting and educational experience that combines fun and historical heritage, ensuring that participants actively participate and get to know the local heritage better.

The legendary guide Bore Štrbac takes you through the "little pearl of great stories"

Around 8:30 p.m., the magical evening in Bakar reaches its peak with a guided thematic tour of the "little pearl of great stories" directed by the legendary Bakar guide Bore Štrbac. His stories about the city are intertwined with local anecdotes and historical facts, which gives each tour a special dimension and makes it unforgettable.

It will be rounded off by a performance by the singer-songwriter Karin Kuljanić in the romantic ambiance below the Castle, which will further emphasize the atmosphere of the evening and offer visitors an emotional musical experience.

Content and activities that delight at every turn

The event does not remain only within the framework of the main program – the whole city comes alive through a series of side events organized by local associations and institutions. Near the church of St. Cross, visitors can expect refreshments and tastings of various local delicacies, while the Hreljin Pensioners' Association organizes card games, providing an opportunity for socializing and fun. Also, a popular photo-point is located at this place as a memento of the event.

Nearby, at the Roman House, the Bakar Maritime School is preparing a workshop on tying sailor's knots, which is not only educational but also fun for all ages. A welcome drink awaits around the bell tower of St. Andrew, and at the same place, the Bakar Gentlemen and Captains will present their handicrafts, while the Our Children Society will organize a raffle with valuable prizes.

At the Plačica location, the Bakar Woman association will demonstrate techniques of crocheting, knitting, and tapestry making, and the Eko-etno Krasica Association will present Krasica slippers, unique local handicrafts. In addition, all visitors will be able to taste local spirits, cakes, baškoti, almonds, and dried figs, which complements the richness of flavors of the Bakar region.

Gastronomic delights in the heart of the Castle

The Castle, as the epicenter of events, also hosts numerous gastronomic delicacies prepared by local producers. The Palentar Association will show how to prepare traditional palenta kompirica, a dish deeply rooted in Bakar's tradition. The Frankulin cheese factory will offer Grobnik cheese, known for its quality and specific taste, while the Dolčina beekeeping community brings old Bakar's water, a natural product with a rich history.

Of course, there are also the indispensable Bakar baškoti and specialties from the Vrbnik bakery, which will delight gourmands. For those looking for a souvenir of this special day, the Bakar gallery of Melina Lanza has prepared a selection of award-winning souvenirs, including unique earrings and magnets with the title "Simply the best". For refreshment on a warm June evening, there will also be a bar with drinks, which will further lift the mood of all participants.

Bakar's spirit and tradition as an inexhaustible source of inspiration

In this way, the Bakar region once again confirms its ability to make tradition and history alive and accessible to everyone. With their innovation and dedication to local values, the people of Bakar continue to spread the story of this "little pearl of great stories" in a way that wins the hearts of all generations. In the years to come, we can certainly expect new themes, content, and events that will further enrich the cultural scene and strengthen Bakar's status as an unmissable destination on the Croatian tourist map.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
