One of the most exciting spring sports events in Croatia will once again revive Lošinj on March 22 and 23, 2025, when the third edition of the international MTB competition XCO Lošinj – Cross Country Mountain takes place. This cycling spectacle, which has already achieved the status of a UCI C1 race, brings top riders from around the world to the beautiful Čikat cove, eager for challenges and adrenaline-fueled rides through the forested and coastal landscape of the island of vitality.

Over 250 competitors from more than 20 countries will test their strength on a demanding track that combines all elements of modern cross-country MTB racing – from technical sections through steep climbs to attractive descents with a view of the sea. A particular challenge is presented by the descent from the top of Monte Baston which, in the event of rainy weather, becomes a true battle for balance and concentration. Everything takes place in the almost untouched nature of Lošinj, accompanied by the scents of pine, the sound of the sea, and the noise of tires racing over rocks and roots.

Preparations, Training, and the Main Race

The program begins on Saturday, March 22, with official training sessions and technical meetings. The riders then analyze the track in detail, try out lines, and refine tactics. The main race, in the Elite and U23 categories, takes place the following day, March 23, starting at 1 PM. In that category, the appearance of last year's winner, Roko Naglić from Slovenia, and the experienced Italian representative Daniele Braidot, who is already known to the Lošinj audience, is expected.

The race is important also because the riders earn points for the world MTB ranking, and the most successful can thereby open the door to participating in the Olympic Games. Furthermore, this race is included in the Croatian Cup in the MTB discipline of Olympic cross (XCO), which further confirms its sporting significance and organizational seriousness.

Lošinj as a World-Class MTB Destination

Lošinj has established itself as one of the leading cycling centers in Croatia, especially when it comes to mountain biking. The Čikat cove and surrounding forests provide naturally formed tracks that perfectly fit the concept of XCO racing. Monte Baston, which dominates the track, offers incredible views of the open sea and nearby islands, while the technical elements of the track test even the most skilled riders. The surface, consisting of soil, stone, roots, and macadam, further varies the race conditions and makes it extremely unpredictable.

Lošinj also stands out for its infrastructure tailored to cyclists: from numerous cycling tracks and service points to digital maps available through mobile applications that allow for orientation and personalized exploration of the island.

The Season of Sporting Excitement Is Just Beginning

After the XCO race, the cycling season on the islands continues on April 15 when the multi-day stage race 4Islands MTB Race begins, connecting four islands: Lošinj, Rab, Cres, and Krk. Over the course of five days, competitors will cover more than 260 kilometers and overcome over 5000 meters of elevation difference. This race attracts pairs who ride together through all stages, and the challenge consists not only of distance, but also of changing weather conditions and terrain that quickly shifts – from island rocks to macadam roads.

Immediately afterwards, from May 8 to 11, Lošinj will host XTERRA Croatia, one of the toughest triathlon competitions in this part of Europe. Swimming, cycling, and running will take place on open and untamed terrains. The mountain bike segment includes almost 40 km of mountain riding through Lošinj’s pine forests, while the trail running of 10 km is a challenge for competitors of all levels.

Digital Navigation Through Nature

For those who wish to explore the island at their own pace, Outdoor Hike & Bike Lošinj is available – a digital guide that covers as many as 16 cycling and 18 hiking tracks. Each route contains GPS coordinates, detailed descriptions, and photographs, which facilitate easier planning and safer exploration. Thus, visitors can experience the same sections as the professionals, or discover hidden spots off the race route – whether they want a leisurely walk along the coast or an adrenaline-pumping climb through the forest.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
