The Istrian peninsula, with its picturesque coastline and magical interior, represents an ideal backdrop for all lovers of active holidays, especially cycling. Its undulating paths, olive groves, vineyards, and medieval towns invite exploration, and when the rich eno-gastronomic offer is added, the experience becomes complete. Precisely such an experience, a combination of recreation and pure hedonism, is offered through a unique event that has been attracting numerous enthusiasts for years.

Spring cycling-gastronomic adventure in the heart of Istria

A surreal experience for recreational cyclists, enriched with top Istrian specialties, opens its doors again. This is the sixteenth edition of the popular Weekend Bike & Gourmet Tour event, which will be held on May 17 and 18, 2025. This carefully designed two-day program will take participants through some of the most beautiful landscapes of Rovinj, Bale, Svetvinčenat, and Kanfanar, offering them the opportunity to discover hidden natural beauties on two wheels and taste the authentic flavors of Istrian cuisine, from seafood delicacies to specialties from the interior, accompanied by indispensable top-quality olive oils and wines.

This event, traditionally held in spring and autumn, is intended for all those who enjoy a lighter bike ride, regardless of whether they use a mountain (MTB), gravel, or electric bike. The organizers have ensured that the trails are adapted for recreational cyclists older than 14 years, and the entire experience is led by professional guides and escorts, with logistical support provided by a support vehicle.

Mare Trail: Scents and tastes of the sea

The first day of the adventure, Saturday, May 17, 2025, is reserved for the "Mare" trail. The gathering and start are scheduled for 10:00 AM at the spacious parking lot of the Eden Hotel Sports Center in charming Rovinj. Ahead of the cyclists is a 59-kilometer route, with a total ascent of 560 meters, which will take them through breathtaking landscapes. The journey begins from the Eden Hotel, through the center of Rovinj, and then continues towards the legendary Štrika Ferata, a former railway line converted into a picturesque cycling and pedestrian path. This is followed by a viewpoint overlooking the Lim Bay, then the picturesque villages of Žuntići, Sorići, and Golas. The route then leads via Pizanovac to picturesque Bale, where participants will be able to feel a touch of history and tradition. After Bale, the trail passes by the famous Stancija Meneghetti, Fort Forno, and the localities of Colone and San Polo. Before returning towards Rovinj, cyclists will pass by an old cistern, through the areas of Veštar and Polari, Cuvi Bay, and the magnificent Zlatni Rt forest park, to finally return to the starting point at the Eden Hotel. Along this route, at specially selected gourmet points, participants will have the opportunity to taste top seafood delicacies, fresh seafood, and other specialties characteristic of the coastal part of Istria, complemented by a glass of local wine or a drop of award-winning olive oil. This part of the tour is called "Istrian Brunch" and "Istrian Picnic," promising a true gastronomic journey.

Monti Trail: Discovering the secrets of the Istrian hinterland

The second day, Sunday, May 18, 2025, takes participants into the interior of the peninsula on the "Monti" trail. The start is scheduled for 10:00 AM from the parking lot in the very heart of Kanfanar. This trail, 54 kilometers long and with an altitude difference of 620 meters, offers a completely different, but equally enchanting experience. From Kanfanar, the route heads towards Pinkolica, Ladići, and Korenići, leading cyclists through green landscapes and peaceful villages. One of the most significant points on the trail is Dvigrad, the impressive ruins of a medieval town abandoned due to plague and wars, whose walls still tell ancient stories. The trail then passes by an old quarry, through Krmed, to Sveti Petar u Šumi, known for its Pauline monastery. Krančići and Raponji follow, before arriving in charming Svetvinčenat, a Renaissance town with the imposing Morosini-Grimani castle. On the way back to Kanfanar, cyclists will pass through Bričanci and Maružine, and again along a section of Štrika Ferata, witnessing the rich cultural and natural heritage of this area. The gourmet points on the Monti trail will be dedicated to the delicacies of the Istrian hinterland – expect truffle dishes, local cheeses, prosciutto, traditional pasta such as fuži and pljukanci, and other specialties that will warm the soul and body. Of course, there will be no shortage of a suitable drop of Istrian wine and a tasting of top-quality olive oils here either. The experience is also designed through the concept of "Istrian Brunch" and "Istrian Picnic." Many visitors who decide to stay in Svetvinčenat or Kanfanar will have the opportunity to explore the beauties of these regions more deeply.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
