The year 2025 will be marked by a grand celebration on the island of Lošinj – 140 years of organized tourism, a period that has left a deep mark not only in the local community but also in the development of tourism in Croatia. It all began in the second half of the 19th century when the island was discovered by doctors, scientists, and enthusiasts in search of a mild climate and pristine nature. Since then, Lošinj has evolved from a modest climatic retreat to a Mediterranean model destination for sustainable development. This historical anniversary is an occasion for celebration, but also a reflection on a long and rich tradition that continues to inspire today.

The roots of tourism: a vision that changed the island

In January 1885, when a doctor from Vienna, Dr. Conrad Clar, arrived on the island with his sick son Walter, no one could have guessed that that moment would mark a turning point in the history of Lošinj. Three weeks later, the child recovered, and the island was entered on the map of European climatic retreats. At the same time, Professor Ambroz Haračić diligently recorded data on the weather, vegetation, and sea currents, laying the foundations for a scientific approach in the development of the destination. These pioneering steps resulted in the founding of the tourism society in Mali Lošinj in 1886, one of the oldest organizations of its kind in Croatia.

From precipitous slopes to a green sanctuary

One of the key moments in the transformation of the island occurred in the autumn of 1886 when, thanks to the initiative of Prof. Dr. Schrotter, the Society for the Beautification and Afforestation of Mali Lošinj was established. Just a few months after its founding, more than 80 thousand pine seedlings were planted along the coast and in the interior of the island. These efforts created the dense pine forest for which Lošinj is known today, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also plays a key role in creating a beneficial microclimate.

Ambroz Haračić – the man who breathed life into the island

The story of Ambroz Haračić is at the heart of numerous programs marking this anniversary. Professor, scientist and visionary, Haračić was the driving force behind the afforestation of the island, the establishment of a meteorological station, and the promotion of Lošinj as a climatic retreat. His image will be brought to life in the documentary-drama film "Zeleni barba", which will premiere at the Vladimir Nazor cinema in Mali Lošinj on March 28, 2025. The film features archival footage, dramatized scenes and a moving narration about a man who, in every way, was ahead of his time.

A conference that defines the future

The central event as part of the 140th-anniversary celebrations will be the conference "Lošinj 140 – a story that endures", where challenges and guidelines for the future of tourism will be discussed. The first panel will focus on sustainability as the key to development – how to balance economic growth, environmental preservation and quality of life. In the second part of the conference, the focus will be on the management of the Čikat park-forest, which faces natural and climatic challenges. Participants will present concrete proposals for its renovation, maintenance and further enhancement as a unique natural and tourist attraction.

Spectacle in May: pastries, music and an imperial return

The grand celebration continues on May 3, 2025, in the main city square of Mali Lošinj. The program includes the creation of the largest krokant in the history of the island – a traditional confection characteristic of this region. Additionally, the audience will be able to enjoy a stage performance depicting the arrival of Emperor Franjo Josip, as well as a ceremonial promotion of the monograph dedicated to Puhački orkestru Josip Kašman, which this year celebrates 150 years of existence. The musical highlight of the evening will be a concert by the band Parni valjak, whose timeless hits will enliven the anniversary.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
