Zagreb, November 24, 2024 – In the past week, Zagreb became the center of global dance arts, hosting the prestigious Choreography Convention titled Bodies in Free Fall. This international event gathered over a hundred choreographers, dancers, dramaturgs, and cultural experts from more than twenty countries, including the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, and North Macedonia. Over the five-day event, participants took part in a rich program that included diverse dance performances, panel discussions, and additional activities, confirming Zagreb's status as an important cultural hub.
Diversity of Dance Expressions and Cultural Exchange
The convention provided a platform for showcasing a wide range of dance styles, from avant-garde performances to traditional dance forms. This diversity allowed participants to explore different approaches to dance art, fostering mutual exchange of ideas and experiences. The program featured performances by renowned artists as well as young talents, ensuring a dynamic and inspiring atmosphere.
Exhibition on the History of Dance in the Region
One of the central events of the convention was the exhibition titled "Dance, Resistance, (Un)work. Cultural, Political, and Artistic Aspects of Dance During and After Yugoslavia", set up at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibition provided insight into the rich history of dance art in the region, highlighting its role in social and political contexts. Visitors had the opportunity to see photographs, videos, and other artifacts documenting the evolution of dance, emphasizing the importance of preserving and valuing dance heritage.
Panel Discussions on the Future of Dance Art
During the convention, numerous panel discussions were held addressing current issues in the dance world. One of the key topics was the need to establish a Croatian Institute for Dance, which would serve as a center for research, education, and promotion of dance art in Croatia. Participants emphasized that such an institution would facilitate systematic collection and preservation of dance materials, which is crucial for preserving cultural heritage and inspiring future generations.
Regional Cooperation and Exchange of Experiences
The convention also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation among dance artists. Although they share a common history and cultural similarities, participants from different countries pointed out specific challenges they face in their environments. Guests from Serbia and North Macedonia emphasized that the contexts differ, but there is a shared desire to improve working conditions and promote dance art. Continuing and deepening regional cooperation was recognized as a key element for the further development of the dance scene in this part of Europe.
Organization and Support
The program of the Zagreb convention was held at several locations, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU), Tala Ple(j)su, and the Zagreb Dance Center (ZPC). The organizers, Antisezona and the regional network Nomad Dance Academy, made significant efforts to ensure a high level of organization and content. The convention is held annually as part of the European Union project "Lifelong Burning 3 – Lost and Found Futures" (LLB), further emphasizing its international significance and support from European institutions.
The Future of the Convention
After the successful convention in Zagreb, it was announced that next year’s event will be held in Leuven, Belgium, and in two years in Helsinki, Finland. This rotation of hosts allows different countries to showcase their dance scenes, encouraging cultural exchange and collaboration at the European level. Participants expressed satisfaction with their experiences so far and hope that future conventions will continue to promote dance art and connect artists worldwide.
