There are stories of loyalty that transcend the usual concept of tourism and grow into a deep, lifelong connection with a specific place. One such, particularly touching story, comes to us from the picturesque Nerezine on the island of Lošinj, where a married couple from Germany is writing the fortieth chapter of their summer chronicle. For Helmut and Elisabeth Zallinger from Bavaria, Nerezine is not just a destination, but a second home to which they tirelessly travel for eight hours, sometimes even twice a year, to immerse themselves in the unique blend of natural beauty, silence, and gastronomic splendor that this part of Kvarner offers.
Four decades of Nerezine's magic
Their Lošinj odyssey began exactly four decades ago. The first encounter with the island happened in the embrace of nature, at the Lopari camp, a place that was then for many the first window into the world of the Lošinj archipelago. Memories of those first days, of the simplicity of camping and untouched nature, still bring a smile to their faces today. Over the years, the desire for a deeper immersion into local life led them towards private accommodation. Exploring the possibilities, they discovered the warmth and hospitality that direct contact with the hosts provides. This search for the perfect corner led them fifteen years ago to the door of Marina Vešković, where their guest-landlord relationship transformed into a sincere and lasting friendship. "After so many years, it's a completely natural sequence. You become friends, almost family. We share stories, we look forward to every new encounter," explains Mrs. Vešković with warmth, whose apartments represent not just accommodation for the Zallingers, but a sanctuary. Their story testifies to how choosing the right accommodation in Nerezine can be the foundation for long-term loyalty and the creation of unforgettable memories.
Discovering the hidden gems of the Lošinj archipelago
Although relaxing by the crystal-clear sea has become their favorite activity in their maturer years, the spirit of exploration has never left this vital couple. Their love for Lošinj is not limited only to the coast of Nerezine. At least once a year, for decades, they embarked on the adventure of conquering Osoršćica, the mountain that stretches along the northern part of the island. Osoršćica is not just an ordinary hill; it is the first mountain on the Adriatic islands that attracted organized tourists back in the 19th century, and from its peak Televrin, there is a breathtaking view – of the entire Lošinj and Cres archipelago, the coast of Istria, and on clear days, even the outlines of Italy. Their hiking trips were a journey through the history of tourism and nature. With equal zeal, they also visited Lubenice on the neighboring island of Cres, an ancient stone settlement located on a cliff almost 400 meters high, from which an unreal view extends to the Sveti Ivan beach, a gem hidden deep below. They also gladly set sail, taking boat trips to smaller, but unique islands. The island of Susak, with its sandy beaches, unique dialect, and vibrant folk costume, offered them an insight into a completely different world. On the other hand, the island of Unije, an oasis of peace without cars, with spacious olive groves and hidden coves, was their refuge to escape from it all.
Nerezine – an oasis of peace in the heart of Kvarner
To the question of why specifically Nerezine, and not some other, perhaps more famous place on the island like Mali Lošinj, the answer is clear and decisive. "Nerezine is different. Although the world has changed and globalization has left its mark, this place has managed to preserve its soul and measure. There is still no mass tourism and excessive crowds that stifle authenticity. This is precisely what we appreciate," explain Helmut and Elisabeth. Their favorite period to visit is June. Then nature thrives, the temperatures are ideal, and the days are the longest. It is a time when one can fully experience the tranquility of the place, before the summer hustle and bustle reaches its peak. Daily rituals also include enjoying the local gastronomy. Nerezine's restaurants and taverns are for them a stage where the best flavors of the island are presented – from freshly caught fish, Kvarner scampi to island lamb and specialties seasoned with wild herbs. This combination of peace, nature, and superb food makes Nerezine a formula for a perfect vacation to which they always return.
Memories and the present: Development through the eyes of loyal guests
They also remember the times from almost four decades ago, when the main connection to the mainland was the Brestova-Porozina ferry line, the same one they still prefer to travel on today, considering it the most picturesque entrance to the world of the archipelago. Over the years, they have witnessed numerous changes and the development of the place. They were particularly impressed by the recent interventions in the very heart of Nerezine. The arrangement of Studenac Square and its transformation into a pedestrian zone is a move they wholeheartedly praise. "The square has become a real living room of the place, a safe and beautiful place for walking and socializing, without the noise and danger of cars," they point out. This positive transformation has further raised the quality of their stay and has shown that the place is developing with care for its residents and visitors. They do not see even the current construction work in some parts of Nerezine as a problem, but as a logical step in the further improvement of the infrastructure, aware that development is an unstoppable process. For them, it is important that this development does not disturb the fundamental atmosphere of the place, which, in their opinion, is being successfully achieved in Nerezine.
Recognition for loyalty that inspires
Such a long and sincere loyalty could not go unnoticed. As a token of gratitude, the director of the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board personally visited the Zallinger family to present them with appropriate gifts and a letter of thanks. A package of products labeled "Lošinj Local Products" – which brings together the best of the island, from myrtle liqueur, olive oil to natural cosmetics – was a symbolic way for the island to thank them for recognizing and loving it. The director expressed admiration for their loyalty and the hope that their Nerezine story will continue for many more years. This meeting was more than a formality; it was an emotional moment that celebrates the deep bond created between people and a place, a bond that is the best ambassador of Lošinj tourism and proof that true quality and hospitality are always recognized and appreciated.
