The second tube of the Učka tunnel has finally been opened, marking a significant advancement in connecting Istria with the rest of Croatia. After several years of work, this project, worth approximately 200 million euros, will enable better and safer traffic through this crucial transport route. The new 5.6-kilometer-long tube allows for faster vehicle flow and significantly reduces congestion, especially during the tourist season when traffic on this route is exceptionally heavy. Thanks to this project, Istria is now much better connected, not only with the rest of Croatia but also with the European road network, further contributing to the development of the economy and tourism in the region.

Infrastructure projects like this one are crucial for economic development, and the completion of the second tube of the Učka tunnel was particularly challenging due to complex geological conditions and the need to simultaneously maintain traffic through the old tunnel tube. The most advanced methods were used, including liquid explosives and conveyor belts for material removal, allowing the work to be completed within the planned timeframe despite numerous challenges. Over 500 workers were involved in the construction, and the entire project represents a triumph of technical expertise and dedicated effort.

Technical aspects and future benefits

The new tunnel tube is equipped with modern safety systems, including fire protection systems, ventilation, and advanced traffic signaling. The tunnel now fully complies with European directives on safety standards for road tunnels, which will significantly enhance driver safety. It is expected that after the completion of the renovation of the old tube, which has been in operation since 1981, the tunnel's capacity will further increase, and both tunnels will be used for one-way traffic, greatly improving traffic flow.

In addition to the renovation of the old tube, further upgrades to the traffic infrastructure are planned, including the completion of the full profile of the motorway between the Učka and Matulji tunnels, as well as the completion of the Mirna and Limska draga viaducts. These infrastructure projects will enable even faster connectivity and further reduce congestion, which is of great importance for Istria, which receives 95% of its tourists via road traffic. All these works are part of a broader plan by the Croatian government to evenly develop all regions of Croatia by the end of the decade and ensure equal accessibility of key transport routes.

Symbol of technical progress and unity

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković emphasized the importance of this project not only for Istria and Kvarner but for all of Croatia during the opening ceremony. The new Učka tunnel tube is a symbol of technical progress and unity, the result of the collaboration of numerous institutions, experts, and workers. The drilling of this tube was not just a technical challenge but also a symbol of long-term cooperation and dedication, further confirming Croatia's ability to carry out major infrastructure projects.

Along with the tunnel, a new section of the motorway connecting the Vranja junction with the Učka tunnel has been completed, and the construction of a rest area on the Kvarner side of the tunnel is planned to provide drivers with a place to rest before entering the tunnel. All these measures make the Učka tunnel the most modern tunnel in Croatia, and its completion represents an important step in strengthening the country's transport and economic infrastructure.

The opening of the second tube was marked by a ceremonial event attended by numerous guests, including the Prime Minister, ministers, and contractors, while members of the acrobatic group 'Wings of Storm' performed a spectacular flyover above the new tunnel. The entire ceremony was a sign of a successfully completed project that will contribute to the long-term development of Istria and Croatia.
