The festival of varaždin courtyards, held in June, once again attracted a large number of visitors with its rich program. This unique festival not only offers insight into the historical beauties of Varaždin but also provides an opportunity for local creatives to showcase their ideas. One of the most striking workshops was "My Sketch - My Coolest Sneaker," which was held in the atrium of the County Hall. The workshop was organized by Dr. Sc. Suzana Kutnjak-Mravlinčić from the Faculty of Textile Technology, Varaždin Unit, and participants had the chance to design sneakers according to their own ideas over two days, going through the entire process from sketch to production.

The uniqueness of this workshop lies in the fact that the result of the creative process became a reality. The most creative sketch, made by five-year-old Marta Petrović from Zagreb, was selected for the production of the sneaker. The renowned shoe factory Ivančica d.d. manufactured the sneaker according to Marta's design, and this unique specimen was presented to Marta at a ceremonial unveiling in Varaždin. This event not only delighted visitors but also further encouraged collaboration between the academic community and local companies in promoting creativity among young people.

Collaboration with local businesses and institutions

The workshop is just one of many examples of collaboration between the Tourist Board of the city of Varaždin and the Faculty of Textile Technology, which together have been contributing to the cultural and educational life of the city for years. In addition to the sneaker-making workshop, visitors could also participate in other creative activities, such as making jewelry from industrial leather scraps, educational workshops on wool, and exhibitions of student works. The festival of varaždin courtyards provides a platform for local artists and craftsmen to showcase their skills, while also allowing visitors to actively participate in creative processes.

Ivančica d.d., as one of the key partners of this workshop, has a long history of supporting innovative projects in the footwear industry. The company, known for the Froddo brand, has shown great commitment to connecting industry and education by providing young designers with the opportunity to see their ideas realized in the real world. This project symbolizes the fusion of tradition and innovation, as Ivančica, while respecting the centuries-old shoemaking tradition, uses modern techniques and approaches in design and production.

Creativity and innovation in the spotlight

The festival of varaždin courtyards is not only an opportunity for local designers and artists but also for the wider public to learn more about creative industries and innovations. The workshops held in the atrium of the County Hall, such as "My Sketch - My Coolest Sneaker," allowed visitors to participate in the entire process of making footwear, from idea to finished product. Additionally, as part of the festival, workshops on 3D printing and keychain making were organized, which attracted technology-oriented visitors.

The unique combination of fashion, design, technology, and cultural heritage allowed Varaždin to once again confirm its status as a center of creative industries in Croatia. This event not only connects local institutions, students, and industry but also inspires new generations of creatives to explore different aspects of design and creation. Therefore, the festival of varaždin courtyards is much more than a cultural manifestation – it is a platform that fosters innovative thinking and collaboration in the community.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
