Croatia faces challenges within NATO while Milanovic blocks sending officers to Germany

Zoran Milanovic's recent decisions have led to serious political turmoil within Croatia. By refusing to consent to the participation of Croatian officers in NATO's NSATU activity, the president is provoking criticism that could have long-term consequences for Croatia's international position. In the context of growing threats, this issue becomes crucial for the security and stability of the region.

In light of recent political events, the situation regarding Croatia's participation in NATO's security and training assistance activity for Ukraine (NSATU) has once again become a subject of debate. The President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, is facing accusations that his actions are complicating Croatia's position on the international stage while simultaneously trying to convince the public that his stance prevents Croatia from being drawn into conflicts.

The government, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Ivan Anušić, recently submitted a Draft Proposal for a decision by the Croatian Parliament on the participation of members of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia in NSATU, which would allow the deployment of up to five Croatian officers to Wiesbaden, Germany. This decision is intended to enable Croatia to participate in logistical support for Ukraine, rather than to be directly involved in the conflict, which some, including Milanović, have mistakenly interpreted as a possibility of sending soldiers to war.

Political upheavals and disagreements

Zoran Milanović's actions, opposing the participation of Croatian soldiers in this NATO activity, have faced sharp criticism from government members. Although the president had the opportunity to express his disagreement during the NATO Summit in Washington, where a Declaration supporting the initiative to assist Ukraine was adopted, he chose to remain silent. A question now arises: why does Milanović, who did not oppose the adoption of this Declaration, now emphasize the dangers of Croatia's participation?

Minister of Defence Anušić has presented clear arguments that participation in NSATU does not include sending Croatian soldiers to Ukraine and that their role would be exclusively logistical. This aims to ensure that Croatia continues to provide the necessary support to Ukraine, which is facing serious threats and needs military assistance. Croatia has consistently provided bilateral support to Ukraine, and NSATU would further strengthen those efforts without exposing Croatian soldiers to danger.

International context and security challenges

In the current geopolitical climate, when the security of the European Union is under test, it is clear that each NATO member plays a crucial role in ensuring regional stability. Milanović's approach, which includes refusing to participate in NATO's activities, can be considered irresponsible and contrary to the interests of the state. Croatia is already firmly integrated within the Euro-Atlantic structures, and decisions made at the NATO level have far-reaching consequences for the security and policy of the entire continent.

While other NATO members actively engage in providing assistance to Ukraine, Croatia faces the challenge of remaining relevant within this international alliance. Refusing to participate in NSATU could further isolate Croatia, undermining its position as a reliable ally. Indeed, engagement in such initiatives represents not only a responsibility to allies but also an opportunity to strengthen its own security and stability.

Croatia's role in NATO and the EU

As a NATO member, Croatia is obliged to actively participate in activities that promote common security interests. This situation emphasizes the need for a clear and consistent foreign policy that aligns with the alliance's goals. Support for Ukraine, which is fighting to preserve its independence and territorial integrity, is part of NATO's broader strategy that includes maintaining peace and stability in the European Union.

Ultimately, Milanović's actions can be interpreted as an attempt to manipulate public opinion to maintain power, but at the same time, it jeopardizes national interests. Croatia must not forget its obligations to international agreements and partners, especially in such crisis times. Refusing to participate in NATO's activities is not only short-sighted but could lead to serious consequences for the security and political stability of Croatia.

In these moments, as we face threats from Russia, Croatia should be united and strong, promoting the values that are the foundation of NATO and the EU. Assisting Ukraine, which defends its democratic values, aligns with Croatian interests and the expectations of allies. If Croatia does not actively engage in these initiatives, it risks losing credibility on the international stage and internal divisions that may have long-term consequences.

Political desk

The political desk shapes its content with the belief that responsible writing and a solid understanding of social processes hold essential value in the public sphere. For years, we have been analyzing political events, monitoring changes that affect citizens, and reflecting on the relationships between institutions, individuals, and the international community. Our approach is based on experience gained through long-term work in journalism and direct observation of political scenes in different countries and systems.

In our editorial work, we emphasize context, because we know that politics is never just the news of the day. Behind every move, statement, or decision are circumstances that define its true significance, and our task is to bring readers closer to the background and intentions that are not visible at first glance. In our articles, we strive to build a vivid picture of society – its tensions, ambitions, problems, and those moments when opportunities for change arise.

Over the years, we have learned that political reporting is not reduced to retelling conferences and press releases. It requires patience, observation, and a willingness to compare various sources, assess credibility, recognize patterns of behavior, and find meaning in actions that sometimes seem contradictory. To achieve this, we rely on experience gained through long-term work with public institutions, civil society organizations, analysts, and individuals who shape political reality through their activities.

Our writing stems from personal fieldwork: from conventions, protests, parliamentary sessions, international forums, and conversations with people who experience politics from within. These encounters shape texts in which we strive to be clear, precise, and fair, without dramatizing and without deviating from facts. We want the reader to feel informed, not overwhelmed, and to receive a picture that enables them to independently assess what a given decision means for their everyday life.

The political desk believes in the importance of open and responsible journalism. In a world full of quick reactions and sensationalism, we choose diligent, long-term work on texts that offer a broader perspective. It is a slower path, but the only one that ensures content that is thorough, credible, and in the service of the reader. Our approach has grown from decades of experience and the conviction that an informed citizen is the strongest guardian of democratic processes.

That is why our publications do not merely follow the daily news cycle. They seek to understand what political events truly mean, where they lead, and how they fit into the broader picture of international relations. We write with respect for the reader and with the awareness that politics is not an isolated field, but a space where economy, culture, identity, security, and the individual life of each person intersect.
