Fourteen years ago, in October 2011, hiker and nature enthusiast Bolto Gaberšek, together with Dalibor Cvitković, his then associate and today the director of the Tourist Board of the Town of Mali Lošinj, embarked on an adventure that would become the foundation of today's hiking transversal Via Apsyrtides. Their goal was to traverse the entire length of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago, from the northern cape Jablanac on Cres to the southern cape Radovan on the island of Ilovik, using at the time unmarked and often forgotten trails that meandered through the untouched nature of these islands.
Without GPS devices, detailed maps, or clearly marked trails, they relied on their own experience, intuition, and deep knowledge of the terrain. They hiked eight hours a day, covering about 30 kilometers, burning approximately 2,500 calories daily. Logistically, they depended on pre-arranged points along the route where they left excess equipment and picked up fresh supplies of food and water. Overnight stays were organized in local households, where they were warmly welcomed by the locals, who provided not only accommodation but also valuable information about upcoming sections.
Their endeavor was challenging and filled with unpredictable situations. They recall encounters with wild animals, such as wild boars suddenly emerging from the thickets, and struggling with bad weather, like strong bora winds that caught them on open parts of the trail. Despite everything, their passion for nature and desire to explore the unknown did not wane.
Years later, thanks to their pioneering effort, an initiative was launched to create an official hiking transversal that would connect the most significant natural and cultural points of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago. Thus was born Via Apsyrtides, a 149-kilometer-long trail divided into 11 sections of varying difficulty, with a total ascent of 4,000 meters. Each section offers a unique experience, passing through dense forests, along the coast of crystal-clear sea, over picturesque hills, and through historical settlements rich in cultural heritage.
Today, the trail is equipped with modern markings, GPS tracks, and detailed descriptions, allowing hikers to move safely and informed. At key points, boxes with stamps are placed, which hikers collect in their Hiking Logbook, a symbolic reminder of the kilometers covered and adventures experienced. The Hiking Logbook is available at the tourist offices of Cres and Lošinj, encouraging hikers to document their journey and share experiences with others.
Besides offering a physical challenge, Via Apsyrtides aims to educate visitors about the rich history, tradition, and biodiversity of the archipelago. Informative boards along the trail provide insight into local customs, flora and fauna, and historical events that have shaped life on these islands. Special emphasis is placed on preserving the natural environment and respecting the local community, encouraging hikers to follow the rules of responsible behavior in nature.
Via Apsyrtides is not just a trail; it is a journey through time and space that enables a deeper understanding and connection with this unique part of Croatia. Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of individuals like Bolto Gaberšek and Dalibor Cvitković, we now have the opportunity to explore and experience the beauty of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago in a way that respects its past and builds a sustainable future.
Hikers who choose this adventure can expect not only a physical challenge but also unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and a deeper connection with nature. Each section offers something special, whether it is a spectacular view from the top of a hill, the silence of a hidden forest path, or the warmth of the hospitality of local residents. Via Apsyrtides invites you to embark on a journey that will enrich your body, mind, and spirit.
