One of the most recognizable vistas of Kvarner, the historic Trsat Castle, opens its doors in a completely new way from July 5, 2025. In a significant move aimed at strengthening the connection of the local population with their own cultural heritage, all residents with a registered address in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County are granted free admission. This commendable initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Rijeka Tourist Board, and it is being implemented as part of the broader county project "On the Routes of the Frankopans". The goal is clear: to make one of the most valuable monuments of Croatian history more accessible to those who live alongside it and to encourage them to explore more deeply the rich legacy that shapes the identity of the entire region.
The decision is not merely symbolic; it represents a crucial step in repositioning Trsat Castle as an open cultural and educational center. By housing the modern Interpretation Center of the "On the Routes of the Frankopans" project within its walls, the Castle has outgrown its traditional role as a monument and has become a comprehensive, interactive cultural and tourist product. It was this very fact that was decisive for the Rijeka Tourist Board to readily accept the County's proposal, recognizing the opportunity to create new value for both citizens and visitors coming to Rijeka.
Trsat Castle: Guardian of Rijeka and Window to Kvarner
Trsat Castle is much more than a stone fortress; it is a living witness to the turbulent history of the city on the Rječina river. Its roots go deep into prehistory, when a Liburnian watchtower existed on the same site, strategically positioned to monitor routes from the interior to the sea. The Romans recognized the importance of this location and included it in their defense system, the Liburnian Limes, whose center was Tarsatica, the ancient city on the site of today's Rijeka Old Town. However, it was the Princes of Krk, a powerful noble family that would later become known as the Frankopans, who left their distinctive mark on Trsat. They took possession in the 13th century and, over the following centuries, built and fortified the castle, turning it into one of their most important strongholds. The Vinodol Law Code of 1288 mentions Trsat as the seat of one of the nine municipalities under their rule, confirming its importance in that period.
Over the centuries, the Castle changed owners and functions, but its strategic importance never waned. From its tower, which rises 138 meters above sea level, there is an unforgettable panoramic view of the entire Kvarner Bay, the islands, and the port of Rijeka, making it an unmissable point for every visitor. The Castle owes its present-day, romantic appearance largely to the Irish count Laval Nugent. This military commander and passionate art collector bought the dilapidated castle in the first half of the 19th century and had it thoroughly restored, saving it from complete ruin. His vision was to turn the fortress into a family mausoleum, and elements of that restoration are visible today, giving it a unique charm. Today, Trsat Castle is the cultural heart of the city, a dynamic space that hosts numerous events throughout the year – from concerts and theater performances as part of the popular "Summer at the Castle" to the magical Advent that attracts thousands of visitors. This new benefit of free admission will certainly further enliven this space, making it an ideal place for a walk, a coffee, and discovering layers of history. For those who wish to extend their stay, finding accommodation in Rijeka has become easier than ever.
At the Heart of the Routes of the Frankopans
This initiative is inextricably linked to one of the largest cultural projects in Croatia – the Cultural-Tourist Route "On the Routes of the Frankopans". This is a comprehensive project initiated by the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, co-financed with significant funds from the European Regional Development Fund. The project includes as many as 17 castles and fortified towns and three sacral buildings scattered throughout the county, from Krk, through Vinodol and Gorski Kotar, to the Rijeka ring. All these sites are connected to the legacy of the Frankopan family, one of the most powerful and influential Croatian noble families that marked history from the 12th to the 17th century.
The Frankopans were not only skilled warriors and politicians but also patrons of culture, builders, and protectors of the Glagolitic script. Their influence is visible in every stone of their castles, in the churches they built, and in the laws they enacted. The goal of the "On the Routes of the Frankopans" route is precisely the revitalization of this rich heritage, its protection from oblivion and decay, and the creation of a new, unique tourist product. Through the project, many of the Frankopan estates have been restored, archaeologically explored, and, most importantly, equipped with modern interpretation content that brings the life of the Middle Ages closer to visitors in an interesting and interactive way. Trsat Castle, with its new Interpretation Center, is positioned as one of the key hubs and the entry point to the entire route, the place where the story of the Frankopans begins in the most impressive way.
Interpretation Center: A Gateway to the Past
The opening of the Interpretation Center within the walls of Trsat Castle represents the culmination of efforts to make this site not only attractive to tourists but also educationally relevant. Unlike traditional museum displays, the center is designed as a dynamic space that uses modern technology to tell the story of the Frankopan family and their era. Here, visitors can learn about the family's genealogy, their most important members, the estates they held, and their role in Croatian and European history.
Multimedia presentations, interactive screens, and carefully designed exhibits take the visitor on a journey through time. It is possible to virtually walk through other Frankopan castles, discover details about knightly tournaments, courtly life, or the importance of the Glagolitic script, which the Frankopans wholeheartedly supported. The center not only celebrates a glorious past but also encourages reflection on the importance of preserving heritage for future generations. By establishing this center, Trsat and Rijeka have gained content that enriches the offer and provides a deeper context for a visit to the Castle itself. It is no longer just a place with a beautiful view, but a place of learning and discovery, making it a complete destination. It is precisely this added value that is intended to be brought closer to the county's residents through the possibility of a free visit.
An Incentive for Local Tourism and Cultural Self-Awareness
Granting free admission to the residents of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County has multiple significances. On the one hand, it is a direct incentive for the local population to become explorers in their own backyard. Many who visited the Castle in their childhood now have the opportunity to rediscover it, to see it in a new light through the prism of new content and a refreshed offer. This strengthens the sense of belonging and pride in one's own history and culture. The local population, well-acquainted with the values of their region, becomes the best ambassador for tourism.
On the other hand, this measure is expected to generate positive economic effects as well. An increased number of domestic visitors, especially outside the main tourist season, will contribute to the sustainability of hospitality and other services at the Castle and in its surroundings. The initiative also sends a strong message about the importance of investing in cultural infrastructure and making it accessible to all. At a time when cultural content is often perceived as elitist or expensive, this move is inclusive and democratic. Trsat Castle thus confirms its status as a true symbol of Rijeka – a place that is open, dynamic, and proud of its layered history, ready to share it with everyone.
