In the heart of Dalmatia, in the historic town of Nin, an event celebrating a centuries-old tradition and gastronomic excellence – Ninska šokolijada – is held every year. This unique event, which will experience its 23rd edition this year, brings together enthusiasts, gastronomes and curious minds from all over Croatia and beyond, offering them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of this region.
Šokol: A Symbol of Nin’s Tradition
Šokol is an indigenous smoked pork product made from pork neck, whose preparation has been passed down from generation to generation since the 17th century. The process of making šokol requires patience and precision: the meat is first salted with sea salt, then dipped in boiled red wine and seasoned with a mixture of aromatic spices. After that, the meat is placed in special meshes and dried in the breeze, which gives it a distinctive taste and aroma. Every family has its own secret recipe, which makes every šokol unique.
The History of Ninska šokolijada
Ninska šokolijada was launched in 2003 with the aim of preserving and promoting the tradition of making šokol. Since then, the event has grown into one of the most important gastronomic events in the region, attracting an increasing number of participants and visitors. Every year, in January, contestants are given meat for preparing šokol, and the final celebration, known as Fešta od šokola, is held in July, when the best šokolar of the year is proclaimed.
Program of the 23rd Ninska šokolijada
This year’s event started on January 20, 2025, with the distribution of meat to the contestants, marking the beginning of preparations for the final celebration. Fešta od šokola is planned for July 20, 2025, and a rich program is expected, which includes:
