During the past weekend, the area of the Police Department of Lika-Senj once again witnessed an increased number of traffic accidents. A total of eleven accidents were recorded, two of which resulted in minor injuries to four people, while the others resulted only in material damage. This series of accidents clearly indicates the need for greater caution among all participants in traffic, especially on weekends when traffic density significantly increases due to tourist activities and local travel.

Of the mentioned accidents with injuries, two incidents occurred in the areas of Gospić and Otočac, where four people sustained minor injuries. The police once again appealed to all drivers to adjust their speed to the conditions on the road, especially in sections where road conditions are challenging, as is the case with the roads through Velebit.

Material damage and accident locations

In addition to the injured, nine accidents were recorded that caused exclusively material damage. Three accidents occurred in Gospić, two in Otočac, three in Korenica, and one in Novalja. Although there were no serious consequences, these events again emphasize the need for better safety awareness and adherence to traffic regulations. Police preventive actions aimed at reducing speed and driving under the influence of alcohol have shown significant results, but it is clear that more work needs to be done to raise driver awareness.

Preventive measures and statistics on offenses

During the weekend, the police conducted a preventive-repressive action aimed at maintaining safety on the roads. This action resulted in the sanctioning of 25 drivers for speeding, two for driving under the influence of alcohol, and seven for not using seat belts. The highest concentration of alcohol was measured in a 39-year-old driver from Gospić, who had 3.28 g/kg of alcohol in his system. This case further highlights the importance of regular police actions and controls to prevent potential tragedies.

Special emphasis on motorcycle safety

Motorcyclists and moped riders are exposed to a higher risk due to their smaller vehicles and often inappropriate speed. Police reports indicate frequent mistakes made by two-wheeled vehicle drivers in traffic, including riding without a protective helmet, driving at inappropriate speeds, and overtaking vehicles in the opposite lane, which often leads to accidents. Riders also frequently weave between stopped lines of vehicles, risking serious accidents.

One example is a recent accident on the state road D8 near Karlobag, where a motorcyclist from Austria lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a traffic sign due to excessive speed. This accident once again emphasizes the need for increased monitoring on road sections that pass through Velebit, but also for generally greater caution among motorcyclists.

Safety recommendations for drivers

The police regularly urges drivers to adhere to basic safety rules, such as wearing protective gear, adjusting speed to road conditions, and driving in accordance with valid regulations. Regular technical inspections of vehicles, including motorcycles and mopeds, are crucial for maintaining the safety of all participants in traffic. The police will continue to implement preventive and repressive measures to reduce the number of traffic accidents and increase safety on the roads.
