Zagreb Mountain, Medvednica, a green oasis rising directly above the Croatian metropolis, will soon once again become the scene of an exciting sporting event. Nature and running enthusiasts eagerly await Sunday, May 25, 2025, when the fifth edition of the popular Medvednica Trail race will take place. This event, which attracts an increasing number of participants year after year, offers a unique opportunity to explore the beauties of Medvednica Nature Park through various running challenges, adapted to all levels of fitness – from experienced ultra trail runners to complete beginners and families with children. The start and finish of all races will be located on the picturesque Hunjka meadow, an easily accessible point within the park, which will radiate energy and sportsmanship on that day.
The organizers, the DŠR Aktivan život Association from Zagreb in cooperation with the Mazator Ultramarathon Club, have made an effort to design an event that not only tests the physical limits of the participants but also rewards them with an unforgettable experience of being in nature, far from the city bustle, yet so close to the urban center.
Medvednica Nature Park – The Green Heart Near the City
Medvednica Nature Park, declared a protected area in 1981, covers an impressive 179 square kilometers and represents not only the lungs of the city of Zagreb but also a treasury of biodiversity and geological history. Its slopes preserve stories millions of years old, recorded in diverse rocks – from igneous to sedimentary and metamorphic. This geological foundation is the basis for an exceptionally rich plant world. Over 1450 species and subspecies of vascular plants have been recorded, accounting for almost a quarter of Croatia's total flora. Forests are the dominant cover of Medvednica, with as many as 12 different forest communities alternating depending on altitude, soil, and exposure. At the foot, forests of sessile oak and common hornbeam prevail, gradually transitioning into dense beech forests that cover most of the mountain. In the higher parts and colder, northern slopes, mixed forests of beech and fir develop, as well as forests of sycamore maple and common ash in the gorges.
Equally impressive is the fauna of Medvednica. Dense forests provide shelter for numerous mammals – from small rodents like mice, dormice, and voles, to larger ungulates such as roe deer and wild boar. Predators like the wildcat, fox, pine marten, and weasel are also present. Bats hold a special place in the fauna; as many as 24 species inhabit Medvednica, many of which are protected and important for the European Natura 2000 network. Their habitats include caves, abandoned mines, tree hollows, and attics of old houses. Veternica Cave, one of the longest in Croatia, is a hibernation site for a large number of bats, which is why visits during winter are restricted so as not to disturb their sensitive hibernation period. The bird world is also rich, with numerous species of songbirds, woodpeckers, and birds of prey. Amphibians like salamanders and various species of frogs inhabit moist areas and streams, while reptiles are represented by lizards and snakes, including the only venomous representative – the horned viper. The clear streams of Medvednica are home to the barbel, chub, brown trout, and the sensitive crayfish. We must not forget the richness of invertebrates, especially insects and butterflies, which complete the complex web of life in this nature park.
In addition to its natural values, Medvednica also offers numerous opportunities for recreation. A dense network of hiking trails, such as the popular Bikčevićeva trail or Leustek's path, leads to numerous mountain huts and picturesque viewpoints. There are also arranged cycling trails, educational trails, medieval mines, Veternica Cave, and the indispensable Medvedgrad, an ancient fortress watching over the city. All this makes Medvednica an ideal place to escape from everyday life and enjoy an active holiday.
Medvednica Trail 2025: A Challenge for All Generations of Runners
The fifth edition of the Medvednica Trail, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, 2025, promises another unforgettable day filled with running, nature, and socializing. The event is designed to offer something for everyone, regardless of running experience or ambitions. From extreme ultra distances that test the limits of endurance, through moderately demanding trails for experienced runners, to shorter routes ideal for beginners and the youngest competitors. The start-finish arena on the Hunjka meadow will be the center of all events, a place for gathering, cheering, and celebrating success.
Race Categories – Choose Your Adventure
The variety of trails is the main feature of the Medvednica Trail. Every participant can find a challenge that matches their current abilities and goals.
Kameni svati 60K: The Royal Ultra Distance
The longest and most demanding race in the program, known as the "royal trail," is 59 kilometers long with a total ascent of an impressive 2,520 meters. This ultra trail adventure leads runners through the most diverse parts of Medvednica, providing a complete experience of the mountain. The trail initially follows the routes of shorter races, then descends westward towards the Gornje Vrapče area, circles the picturesque Ponikve meadows, and passes by the abandoned Bizek quarry. The highlight of this part of the trail is reaching Kameni svati, a location with arguably the most beautiful view on Medvednica, known for its unusually shaped dolomite rocks. This section is reserved exclusively for experienced ultra trail runners, physically and mentally prepared for several hours of effort. The time limit for finishing the race is 13 hours. Successful completion earns 3 ITRA points and qualifies as a UTMB Index race in the 50K category, making it attractive for runners collecting points for international rankings and prestigious world races. The rules are strict: mandatory following of the GPX track, passing all checkpoints within the specified time limits, and possession of mandatory equipment are required.
Ponikve 45K: Challenge for the Experienced
With a length of 44.7 kilometers and 2,180 meters of ascent, the Ponikve 45K trail presents a serious challenge, but is designed as a logical step before moving on to the longest distance. This trail largely follows the route of the 60K race, excluding the initial segment towards Gorščica. Participants can expect three significant climbs that define the character of the race: the climb to Sljeme, the challenging Plazur, and the technically demanding Horvatove stube (Horvat's stairs), a unique monument of construction skill in nature. This race is intended for experienced trail runners seeking to test their endurance on demanding terrain. The time limit is 10 hours. Finishing the race earns 2 ITRA points and is also scored as a UTMB Index race in the 50K category, contributing to the runner's international ranking.
Plazur 30K: Speed and Endurance Tested
The Plazur 30K trail is 31 kilometers long with 1,420 meters of ascent. It represents a shorter, yet still very demanding option for runners with experience on mountain terrain. The key part of this trail is the climb to Plazur, which tests the strength and technique of the runners. It is ideal for those who want to experience the charms of a longer trail without entering the ultra category or as a fast race for very fit competitors. The time limit of 6 hours requires maintaining a good pace. The race earns 2 ITRA points and falls into the UTMB Index 20K category.
Gorščica 15K: Perfect Entry into the World of Trail
With a length of 14.7 kilometers and a relatively mild 510 meters of ascent, Gorščica 15K is a trail perfectly suited for those just discovering the joys of trail running or transitioning from road running to natural surfaces. The first nine kilometers follow wide and well-maintained gravel roads (Markuševečki and Vidovečki makadam), mostly slightly downhill or on flat terrain. The second part of the trail includes an ascent on a wide and well-maintained hiking path that circles the eastern part of Medvednica and passes near the popular Gorščica mountain hut and picnic area. The trail has no technically demanding sections and can be completed by any recreational runner with basic fitness. The time limit of 3 hours is more than sufficient. This trail also carries points for the ITRA National League.
Hunjka 5K: Sprint Through the Forest
The shortest trail, Hunjka 5K, is 4.4 kilometers long with only 140 meters of ascent. It is a fast, circular trail around the Hunjka start-finish meadow, ideal for absolute beginners who want to try a race for the first time, for road runners wanting a short excursion into trail running, or for those who simply love short and explosive sections. The time limit of 1 hour makes it accessible to everyone. This race also earns points for the ITRA National League.
Team Race: Together is Easier (and More Fun)
For those who love team spirit, there is the Team Race, which runs on the same route as Gorščica 15K (14.7 km / 510 m+). This is an opportunity to share the race experience with friends, colleagues, or club members, develop a strategy, and cross the finish line together. Competing as a team adds a special dimension to the challenge and encourages mutual support.
Mali Patuljak (Little Dwarf): Future Trail Stars
The organizers have not forgotten the youngest ones. The children's trail race "Mali patuljak," 2.4 kilometers long, is intended for pupils of all primary school grades. The goal is to encourage children to move in nature and introduce them to the beauty of trail running in a fun and safe way. Often, children run accompanied by their parents, many of whom later start in one of the longer and more demanding races, making Medvednica Trail a true family event.
International Reputation: UTMB Index and ITRA National League
Medvednica Trail is not just a local race; it is part of the global trail scene. The status of a UTMB Index race means that participants on the 60K, 45K, and 30K trails achieve or improve their UTMB Index with their result. This is a global ranking system that allows runners to track their own performance and serves as a qualification tool for accessing races in the prestigious UTMB World Series, including the world's most famous trail race – the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. The race categorization (50K for 60K and 45K trails, 20K for the 30K trail) helps runners plan their season and choose races.
At the same time, all senior trails (60K, 45K, 30K, 15K, and 5K) are part of the ITRA National League, the Croatian cup competition in trail running under the auspices of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA). By participating in the Medvednica Trail, runners collect points for the national league. ITRA points (3 for 60K, 2 for 45K and 30K) are also an internationally recognized indicator of race difficulty, taking into account length and elevation gain, and contribute to the runner's personal ITRA Performance Index.
Preparing for the Challenge on Medvednica
Participating in a trail race, regardless of the chosen distance, requires adequate preparation. Trail running differs from road running due to uneven terrain, ascents, and descents, which engage more muscle groups and require greater concentration.
The key to successful preparation is gradual and consistent training. It is necessary to gradually increase mileage and time spent on your feet, with special emphasis on training that includes climbs and descents similar to those on Medvednica. Ideally, as much training as possible should be done on the trail paths themselves so that the body gets used to the surface and technical demands. In addition to the running part, it is extremely important to include strength training, focused on strengthening the muscles of the legs, core, and back, which helps prevent injuries and improves efficiency on climbs. Stability and mobility exercises are also important for maintaining balance and agility on uneven terrain.
Equipment choice plays a crucial role. The most important piece of equipment is quality trail running shoes that provide good grip on various surfaces (dirt, mud, rocks, roots), stability for the ankles, and protection for the toes. Clothing should be technical, made of materials that quickly wick away sweat and dry quickly (avoid cotton). Layering is recommended to adapt to changing conditions. Depending on the race length and weather conditions, mandatory or recommended equipment may include a running backpack or hydration vest (bottles or bladder), headlamp (especially for longer trails), emergency blanket, whistle, charged mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit. Running poles can be very helpful on long and steep climbs. It is important to check the list of mandatory equipment for the chosen trail, as it is checked when picking up the race bibs.
A nutrition and hydration plan during the race is crucial for maintaining energy. It is necessary to plan fluid and calorie intake in advance. There are aid stations on the Medvednica Trail routes offering water, isotonic drinks, fruit, and salty and sweet snacks. However, it is important to know that there will be no plastic cups at the aid stations – each competitor must carry their own cup or bottles into which refreshments will be poured. It is advisable to carry your own energy gels or bars, especially on longer trails.
Familiarizing yourself with the race route before the start can significantly help. Studying the map, elevation profile, and GPX track (which is available for download) allows for better mental preparation and pace planning. The trails will be marked with ribbons and signs, but following the markings and personal orientation are the responsibility of each runner. Deviating from the marked trail can lead to disqualification.
Safety comes first. Runners should be aware of their surroundings, adjust their speed to the conditions on the trail, and be mindful of other participants. In case of injury or other problems, it is necessary to inform the organizer or the nearest checkpoint. For more serious situations, the organizer activates the on-duty Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS). Also, it is extremely important to respect nature, not litter (waste is disposed of exclusively at aid stations), and not destroy the flora and fauna of the Nature Park.
Logistics and Experience on Race Day
Race day begins with gathering on the Hunjka meadow, where excitement and positive energy will prevail. Race bib pickup will be possible the day before in Zagreb (Trčaona space, Prisavlje 8) and on the race day itself at the info tent on Hunjka for competitors coming from outside Zagreb. Checking the required equipment for each trail is mandatory when picking up the bibs. The race kit includes a race number with a timing chip, a unique finisher medal for everyone who completes the race, and a meal after the race.
The start of all races will be a "gun start," meaning the time starts running for all competitors at the start signal, regardless of their position in the starting block. The results will also show the net ("chip") time, but the official ranking is determined by the gun time.
During the race, runners must pass all checkpoints within the specified time limits. At the aid stations, they should replenish fluid and energy supplies, respecting the rule of using their own cups or bottles. Markings will be placed along the entire length of the trail, and volunteers will be present at critical points to direct runners. At the finish line on Hunjka, runners await a well-deserved rest, refreshments, and the award ceremony by category (overall men and women, and by age categories).
Accommodation for Participants and Visitors
For Medvednica Trail participants coming from outside Zagreb or simply wanting to extend their stay and enjoy the charms of Medvednica, there are several accommodation options. Directly on Sljeme are Hotel Tomislavov Dom and Aparthotel Snježna Kraljica, offering hotel comfort in a mountain setting. Also, scattered throughout Medvednica are numerous mountain huts and houses, such as Planinarski dom Grafičar, Planinarski dom Runolist, or Planinarska kuća Hunjka (in the immediate vicinity of the start/finish), which provide simpler but authentic mountain accommodation. It is advisable to check availability and book accommodation in the huts in advance, especially during the race period.
Alternatively, at the foot of Medvednica, in the northern parts of Zagreb (districts of Gračani, Šestine, Mlinovi, Markuševec), numerous private apartments and holiday homes are available, offering a quieter environment and easier access to the mountain. Of course, the city of Zagreb itself offers a huge selection of accommodation facilities for every taste and budget – from hostels and affordable apartments to luxury hotels. Thanks to good public transport connections (bus lines to the Podsljeme zone), staying in the city can also be a practical option for race participants.
