Gospić was transformed last weekend into the vibrant heart of the global walking community, confirming its status as an essential point on the active tourism map. The seventh edition of the Croatian Walking Festival, held on September 6 and 7, surpassed all expectations, gathering a record of over 1800 participants from Croatia and more than 25 countries worldwide. The streets and trails of Lika echoed with an incredible mix of languages, from Korean and Japanese to English, German, and Dutch, creating a unique atmosphere of international friendship and community in the heart of Croatia.

This impressive number of participants is no coincidence, but the result of years of work and positioning the festival on the world stage. The event is a member of the prestigious International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) and a candidate for membership in the International Marching League (IML), which gives it global visibility and attracts passionate walkers who travel the world to participate in such events. It is this affiliation with international associations that explains the presence of enthusiasts from distant countries like South Korea, Japan, and the United States, who brought the spirit of global walking gatherings to Lika.

On trails that connect nature, genius, and history

This year, the organizers once again prepared meticulously designed routes that offer participants much more than just walking. They are a journey through untouched nature, but also a deep dive into Croatian history and culture. The first day of the festival, Saturday, was dedicated to one of the greatest minds of humanity. Walkers followed the "Paths of Tesla," choosing between trails of 10, 20, or 30 kilometers. These routes led them through the picturesque village of Smiljan, the birthplace of Nikola Tesla, culminating in a visit to the "Nikola Tesla" Memorial Center. For many international guests, the opportunity to stand on the spot where the genius who illuminated the world was born was an unforgettable and emotional experience. The day concluded at Stjepan Radić Square in Gospić, where a palpable energy of community filled the air. With the sounds of music and the smell of traditional bean stew, experiences were exchanged and new friendships were made, and many were already planning their return next year and searching for the ideal accommodation in Gospić for future visits.

Sunday brought a big and long-awaited surprise – the premiere of completely new trails called the "Paths of Starčević." These routes, also designed in three different lengths (10+, 20+, and 30+), led participants towards Veliki Žitnik, the birthplace of the "Father of the Homeland," Dr. Ante Starčević. Walkers had the unique opportunity to visit the Memorial Home and learn about the life and work of one of the most important figures in Croatian history. The combination of physical activity, spending time in the beautiful landscapes of Lika, and a lesson in national history proved to be a complete success. Participants expressed great enthusiasm for this concept, thanking the organizers for revealing new, hidden beauties and the historical richness that Lika offers. Many took the opportunity to take photos in front of the memorial home, creating lasting memories of this special journey.

A colorful river of walkers as the most beautiful postcard of Lika

The scenes from the Lika trails last weekend were truly spectacular. A colorful column of walkers, equipped with backpacks from which the flags of their countries fluttered, stretched for kilometers through green meadows and forests. Japanese, Korean, American, Dutch, German, and numerous other flags created a vivid picture of global unity. A particularly touching sight was to see how many foreign walkers, alongside their national flag, also proudly displayed the Croatian one, thus showing respect and love for the host country. It was in this spirit of community, in the rhythm of steps, that new acquaintances were born. Many of the participants are veterans of this festival, and their return to Gospić was a reunion of old friends who share the same passion for walking and nature.

Given the record number of visitors from all over the world, tourist capacities were filled to the last spot. The demand for a stay in the heart of Lika showed that such events have a direct and strong impact on the local economy, promoting Gospić and its surroundings as a desirable destination. The director of the Lika-Senj County Tourist Board, Ivan Radošević, did not hide his satisfaction. "The presence of over 1800 walkers from all over the world is the strongest confirmation that Lika is recognized as a top destination for active tourism. This festival is not just an event; it is our most beautiful living postcard. All those people who have experienced our landscapes and hospitality become the best ambassadors of Lika and Croatia in their home countries," Radošević pointed out, emphasizing the long-term value of the event.

Walking as a universal language that builds bridges

The festival's power in connecting people and cultures was particularly emphasized by the secretary of the Croatian Walking Federation, Mile Milković. "Never before has Gospić resonated with so many world languages. This is proof that we have succeeded in creating an event that crosses borders. The reactions from participants are extraordinary; they are thrilled with our nature, untouched landscapes, but also with the warmth and hospitality at every turn. The stories we reveal to them through the trails dedicated to Tesla and Starčević give this festival a deeper dimension," said Milković. He added that this is the largest and most successful edition so far, a clear indicator that walking as an activity has an incredible power to bring people together, erase differences, and build lasting friendships. Many participants have already announced their arrival for next year, planning to extend their stay to further explore everything this region has to offer, from natural beauties to gastronomic offerings, which is great news for everyone offering private accommodation in Lika.

The seventh edition of the Croatian Walking Festival broke all records of attendance and organizational quality, firmly positioning itself among the world's leading events of this type. Gospić and Lika have once again proven to be perfect hosts for an event that uniquely combines recreation, nature, history, and, most importantly, people. To the rhythm of steps, in the heart of Lika, another beautiful story of togetherness was written, a story understood by all languages of the world.

Tourism desk

Our Travel Desk was born out of a long-standing passion for travel, discovering new places, and serious journalism. Behind every article stand people who have been living tourism for decades – as travelers, tourism workers, guides, hosts, editors, and reporters. For more than thirty years, destinations, seasonal trends, infrastructure development, changes in travelers’ habits, and everything that turns a trip into an experience – and not just a ticket and an accommodation reservation – have been closely followed. These experiences are transformed into articles conceived as a companion to the reader: honest, informed, and always on the traveler’s side.

At the Travel Desk, we write from the perspective of someone who has truly walked the cobblestones of old towns, taken local buses, waited for the ferry in peak season, and searched for a hidden café in a small alley far from the postcards. Every destination is observed from multiple angles – how travelers experience it, what the locals say about it, what stories are hidden in museums and monuments, but also what the real quality of accommodation, beaches, transport links, and amenities is. Instead of generic descriptions, the focus is on concrete advice, real impressions, and details that are hard to find in official brochures.

Special attention is given to conversations with restaurateurs, private accommodation hosts, local guides, tourism workers, and people who make a living from travelers, as well as those who are only just trying to develop lesser-known destinations. Through such conversations, stories arise that do not show only the most famous attractions but also the rhythm of everyday life, habits, local cuisine, customs, and small rituals that make every place unique. The Travel Desk strives to record this layer of reality and convey it in articles that connect facts with emotion.

The content does not stop at classic travelogues. It also covers topics such as sustainable tourism, off-season travel, safety on the road, responsible behavior towards the local community and nature, as well as practical aspects like public transport, prices, recommended neighborhoods to stay in, and getting your bearings on the ground. Every article goes through a phase of research, fact-checking, and editing to ensure that the information is accurate, clear, and applicable in real situations – from a short weekend trip to a longer stay in a country or city.

The goal of the Travel Desk is that, after reading an article, the reader feels as if they have spoken to someone who has already been there, tried everything, and is now honestly sharing what is worth seeing, what to skip, and where those moments are hidden that turn a trip into a memory. That is why every new story is built slowly and carefully, with respect for the place it is about and for the people who will choose their next destination based on these words.
